CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

In the era of globalization, Language is one of the important skill in any level or aspect
that everyone has to be able to. Without Language, people are difficult to gather or sharing
information with others. One of the most used languages used by people in the world is
Mandarin. The name Mandarin itself comes from a group of related varieties of Chinese
spoken across most of northern and southwestern China. The Mandarin Language is one of
the official languages that recognize by the United Nations as reported on the United Nations
website [1]. Therefore, understanding mandarin is one of the important things to learn to
establish international relationship and communication.

Multimedia is one of the results of technological developments. In general, multimedia is

used to present the information by using a combination that may include a text, graphics,
animation, pictures and etc. With the help of this technology, it allows students or the
lecturers to exhibit their understanding of a certain topic with a new possible method of
learning [2]. According to this statement, the author is encouraged to develop a learning
application with the help of multimedia to present a revolutionary approach in the education
field, especially in the Mandarin Language.

In the modern technological era, most people commonly have their own mobile devices.
Using their own devices, people can easily access any information mostly anywhere and
anytime as long as they are connected to the internet. From the word “mobile” it can be
concluded that is stands for “mobility” or the ability to move freely and easily from one place
to another. Mobile learning usually refers to the implementation of mobile devices as a
platform for learning in a certain study. The features of mobile technology such as the
portability and information accessibility play a major role in the enhancement of teaching
and learning [3].

Currently, Android is the most popular platform and Operation System (OS) on mobile
devices, other than because it uses Open Source license which attracting more mobile
application developers. It is based on the Linux kernel and developed by Google. It allows
developers to write managed code in the Java language and controlling the device via
Google-developed Java libraries [4]. We can draw a conclusion that Android is very suitable
for the new mobile application developer that commonly using Java to develop an
application in desktop software.

B. Reason for Choosing the Topic

Looking forward towards the growth of technology, the technology should be able to
reach the most common aspect in society. Not only for corporates or factories, but education
should also be a part of implementation in technology. Therefore, in order to achieve that
objective, the author chooses this topic to improve the quality and interest in education,
especially in Mandarin language subject. The author has looked forward to implementing this
learning technique in Senior High School on Jakarta. The reason the author chooses this
particular topic will be described, as follows:
a. Implementing the revolutionary approach in the education system by using mobile
application as a learning platform.
b. Change the way of learning to be more interesting, advanced, and can be done
anywhere.
c. Encouraging the level of understanding in the Mandarin Language with a new way of
learning technique.

C. Problems of the Research

The problem of this research can be formulated as follows:
a. Will this technique is able to improve the teaching or learning technique?
b. Will the application is attractive in delivering the content?
c. Will the student or Lecturer is able to adapt to this learning approach?
D. Scope of Work
In order to cover the problem, the scope of work will be explained below:
a. Developing an Android application with Android Studio.
b. Android application for Senior High School in Jakarta.
c. Using the Mandarin Language as an objective understanding.

E. Research Contribution
This Research is expected to give some contribution to the students, Mandarin Teacher,
and Android Developer. The contribution as follows:
a. The students
This research hopefully is able to make the students understanding the Mandarin
language more convenient and able to learn the subject not only in school or
classroom. But, everywhere and anywhere.
b. Mandarin Teacher
By the result of this research, the author is expected to help the teacher in order to
gain the attraction and attention of the student to understand the subject.
c. Android Developer
At the end of this research, the author is expected for the youth android developer is
able to gain information from this research and implemented some method that can be
used in the upcoming application development especially in the educational field.

the topic, the explanation will be provided as follows:

[1] The Design and Development of Mobile Collaborative Learning Application Using Android
by Kwang B. Lee et al. (2012).

This research study is describing the usage of mobile device as the new approach way
towards the new education era, this paper introduces the theoretical and technical foundations for
designing and developing an effective Mobile Collective Learning (MCL) environment that also
included with the proposed prototype where designed and constructed using the Android
operating system with a particularly suggestive infrastructure that matches with the type of that
system[3].
[2] Tingkat Adopsi Inovasi Teknologi Sistem M-Learning Dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa
Mandarin Pada Tingkat Sma By Yulius Hari et al. (2016).

This research study is describing the providing solution of the limitation in the Mandarin
Language lecturer resources by using Mobile Learning (M-Learning) as the new innovation for
the educational system in order to overcome the limitation and difficulty to learn the Mandarin
Language. The performance of the prototype of this study is being tested by students in Senior
High School (SMA) in Surabaya. The feedback is collected in the form of a questionnaire in the
Likert scale and later on the data will be processed with Structural Equation Modelling approach
as the data analysis technique [5].

B. Theoretical Basis
a. Mandarin Language

About one-fifth of the world population speaks Chinese as its native language, making it
the most common use language in the world. The Chinese language is one of the six official
languages acknowledge by the United Nations. The Chinese language consists of seven main
dialects: Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, Wu, Min, Xiang, and Gan. Mandarin is the
standardized form of Chinese Language based on the Beijing dialect. Which is one of the
official language in Singapore [6].
b. Android

Android is a platform and mobile operating system (OS) that based on the Linux kernel
developed by Google. Android is designed specifically for touchscreen devices such as
smartphones or a tablet computer. The source code of Android is being released by Google in
under open source licenses, although most of the Android devices ultimately dispatch with a
combination of open source and proprietary software, including the proprietary software that
is developed and licensed by Google [7].
c. Mobile Learning

The term Mobile learning has a different meaning in other communities. But commonly it
means about implementing the learning method using mobile devices [8]. These days,
Mobile learning is being more popular in the approach of educational purpose. Especially
with the current conditions where now almost everyone has their own device in their pocket,
which enables the retrieval of information anytime and anywhere.
d. Kotlin

Kotlin is a programming language thas basis on Java Virtual Machine (JVM) developed
by JetBrains [9]. Kotlin is a programming language that focused on the development of the
mobile application by combining Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and Functional
Programming. One of the general purpose using this programming language is that Kotlin is a
cross-platform programming language, which is able to run whether in Android or IOS. There
are several benefits that Kotlin offers, there are:
 Kotlin allows writing less code
 Support functional programming
 Multi-platform compatibility
 Light-weight runtime during compilation
 Kotlin is fully compatible with Java.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. Research Methodology
As explained by Borg & Call (1983) they stated that educational Research and
Development is a process used to develop and validate educational products. Which in the other
word, it must be applied as a crucial procedure to make bold integrity and swift progress to the
next level of educational products [10].
The research methodology that is used in this research study is formulated in 5 phase that
can be seen in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Development Flowchart

Each step of the phase will be explained as follows:
a. Analysis Phase

In order to develop a good quality product, the first step that is needed is to perform
research. Research is a fundamental aspect that can improve and guarantee the effectivity and
efficiency of the product. Research can be in the form of studying literature, field monitoring,
survey or questionnaire and many else. In this phase the author is executed in the two-part of
action, finding and analyzing the problem and performing literature study from journal and book
that related to the root of the problem. Before going through the next process, validation from the
supervisor or expert must be obtained so that it can proceed to the next phase.
b. Design Phase

In this phase of development, an element of the system will be defined and determined
into the application product. The design is divided into two aspects that are system and interface
design. In the systems design, Database, Source Code, and others that similar with will be
included here. For the interface design, it is more contained about the user interface and user
experience.
c. Development Phase

The Development Phase is the main core of the procedure in developing this application,
the design that has been created in the Design Phase will be implemented here into code in
Android Java programming language. In this part of the process, the author is using Integrated
Development Environment (IDE) with System Development Kit (SDK) which contain libraries
that can be used to develop this mobile application.
d. Testing Phase

Before releasing or publishing the application, program testing is certainly needed to be

done in order to find the error and bug parts in the program itself. The testing phase is divided
into two part type of the test, the first one the software will be tested by the author itself and the
second one the software will be tested by the user. The result of software testing can be in the
form of feedback, survey, and questionnaire in order to know the reaction and respond to the
application.
e. Final Phase

This is the last process of developing the application. In this final stage, the author should
create the final report and completely revised the software corresponding to the main objective of
the development. The report is arranged accordingly to the rule that has been provided by the
supervisor to the author.
