Introduction

1.1.Background of the Study

Study habits are the behaviours used when preparing for tests or learning academic material.

Academic exam scores has been the basis on a student’s grades and also their knowledge

capability academically. The statistics that is acquired in a student’s exam scores are and have

been one of the the determiner in a person’s performance in school.

According to Akinboye, et al. (1974), There is a positive significant relationships between study

habits and academic performance. However, according to Danskin et al. (1952), reported a

negative relationship between academic performance and study habits.

According to an experiment between the study habits and achievement motivation made by

(Jegede, et al.) 1997, It shows that the mean score of the study habits group was higher than

those of the control group and the achievement motivation group.

This means that study habits have a correlation in the senior highschool student’s quarterly exam

scores. Also, according to Uwusu-Acheaw et al.(2014), The study revealed that majority of the

respondents had the view that reading habits have effect on academic performance and that there

is a direct relationship between reading habits and academic performance.

1.2.Statement of the Problem

This study ought to know the correlation between study habits and quarterly examination

scores of Senior High School students:

1. Is there a significant correlation between the student’s study habits and their test scores?

2. How do study habits affect the student’s test scores?

3. How do study habits affect a student’s exam scores negatively?

1.3.Scope and Delimitation

The study about The Correlation between Senior High School Humanities and Social

Sciences Student’s Study Habits and their quarterly examination scores, will be conducted

mainly at San Marcelino St. Ermita, Manila. The given time to gather datas about the study

will take Five(5) months. The chosen respondents are grade 11 and 12 HUMSS student in a

private school. Using a survey questionnaire will accurately stands as a proper instrument for

the study.

1.4. Significance of the Study

Students- it can help them develop their mind and be aware that they should not only focus

on their study habits they should also focus and be prepare for their quarterly examinations. It

can also help them realize the that study habits has negative and positive effects.

Teachers- with the result of the study it can help them to identify and assess their self if they

are really an effective teachers. The teacher also gain a significance in this study for they will be

Future Researchers- the future researchers will benefit from the study because they can use

it in their thesis if it is related to their study, and also it can share to the future researchers to open

up new ideas and can give them initial knowledge.

1.5.Review of Related Literature and Related Studies

1.5.1. Local Literature

According to Jestine Crisostomo, et al. (ND) Study Habit of every student is one of the most

important factors that affect his or her understanding regarding a certain subject. It means, if a

student possesses poor study habits, she has a greater chance of getting failing grades, if compare

to a students who has a good study habit. But “habit” as it was defined from the Introduction to

Psychology, means “a learned, or fixed way of behaving to satisfy a given motive”. By this

definition alone, we can say that the person involves is the one making or forming his own habit.

Maybe, habits can be affected by outside interference like his environment, his attitude toward

his comparisons, his teachers and the books and reading materials around him, even the place

where he study and other factors which influence the concentration of a students to effectively

understand his lessons, and to pass his mind to discipline himself and form to himself the proper

study habits which he knows he really needed.Study habit is the regular tendency or practice in

studying. It is the one that is somehow hard to give up.

1.5.2. Foreign Literature

According to Anton Lucanus(2018) With the advent of new technologies and social media,

students at college are finding it increasingly difficult to focus and study effectively. Top

ranked colleges across the United States are becoming so competitive that in order to stay

afloat and thrive in their chosen field of study, students must consistently outperform peers –

and the key to doing so is maintaining a high level of academic performance. Poor study

habits are the downfall of many a student, and with so many varying approaches to effective

study, how on earth are you supposed to know which is the best? He gave some negative

study habits that will without doubt impact your academic performance in the long run, so we

recommend you address them as quickly as possible.

1.5.3. Local Studies

According to Magulod (2019), In order to better prepare university students as proficient,

versatile and productive information and industrial technologists in the 21st century, the

need to implement instructional strategies and activities naturally align with their

predispositions will make them better learners. This study examined the learning style

preferences, study habits and level of academic achievement of students enrolled in

applied science courses of one campus of a public higher education institution in the

Philippines. The study employed descriptive correlational research design to a total of

seventy-five respondents who were purposively sampled. Two sets of standardized

instruments were utilized by the researcher. Results of the study revealed that the students

of applied sciences courses preferred visual, group and kinesthetic as major learning

styles while they manifest a moderate level of study habits. They also have a good level

of academic achievement. Test of difference revealed that academic performance, father's

occupation and type of high school graduated from spelled significant differences in their

perceptual learning styles. They also spelled differences in their study habits when

grouped according to academic standing in high school, writing skills, mothers'

education, and test anxiety. Finally, there were significant relationships between learning

styles, study habits and academic performance of students in applied science courses. The

implications of the study can guide instructors to plan and deliver suitable instructional

interventions.

1.5.4. Foreign Studies

The study sought to assess the reading habits among students and their effects on their

academic performance. The study was conducted in Koforidua Polytechnic situated in the

Eastern Region of Ghana. A questionnaire was used for the data collection. The data collected

were analyzed quantitatively with the use of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).

Figures and tables were used to present the results of findings. From the total of 1052 copies of

questionnaire distributed, 1000 copies, representing 95.0% were filled and returned. The findings

showed that majority of the respondents acknowledge the importance of reading, 81.9% of the

respondents neither read novel nor fiction within the last two semesters while 62.0% of the

respondents only read for the purpose of passing examination. The study confirmed that reading

habit has influence on academic performance and there is a relationship between reading habit

and academic performance. The study recommended among others that lecturers should be

advised to stop providing handouts to students but rather encourage them to use the library for

research and also, the current system of assessing students should be given a second thought with

respect to the formulae of assessment. According to Kutay (2014), reading improves the thinking

ability by giving new concepts and ideas and enhances vocabulary and language which is

essential in verbal communication. Meanwhile, reading and academic achievement are essential

for research workers and educationists to know that every child whether he or she is gifted,

average, normal or backward etc, should be educated in his or her own way but if he or she

possesses good study habits, he or she can perform well in academics and in every situation (

Owusu-Acheaw & Larson, 2014). To fulfil numerous types of knowledge process, it is crucial to

start reading at an early age to seek knowledge more effectually. ...

Reading habits are what it needs to create a literate society. Owusu-Acheaw & Larson

(2014) study found that reading habits determine the academic achievements of students to a

great extent. Both reading and academic achievements are interrelated and dependent on each

other. ...

Based on a research done by Owusu-Acheaw (2014), the reading habits of students of

Koforidua Polytechnic in Nebraska, 62% out of 1000 students choose to read lecture notes when

they visit the library. Unlike the 62% of the students, 25% of them prefer to read textbooks in the

library. ...
