Chapter Two is all about the study of Law.

There are different reasons why one was inclined to go to law

school. For some, it is a lifelong dream, for others it could be for career advancement. There are also
students who enrolled in law school because their parents wished for them to do so. Whatever the
reason behind a student’s enrollment in the college of law is already beside the point once he/she is
already in battle.

Law school is not a piece of cake. Classroom discussions are designed to test the student’s knowledge on
the provisions and subject matter at hand. This is to train law students to do their own research,
analysis, and study on a particular matter. A student enters the school of law, not only just to learn the
law, but also to learn how apply the law.

Some would even compare the study of law to a jealous mistress that demands so much time and
attention. Concededly, the law maybe regarded as a jealous mistress that if you take it for granted, it
would definitely leave you. This is why time management is very important in law school.

It must start with a dream – to become a lawyer. This will serve as the inspiration at the same time the
end goal. Some eventually enter law school just for the sake of trying it and eventually ended up loving
the law. If you decide to be a lawyer, you must decide wholeheartedly.

A law student must be determined to hurdle the bar even if it will take a great sacrifice. One must
persevere and be ready to give up hobbies that are less important to focus on studying. Also, studying
the law requires a lot of patience. Reading and analyzing provisions and cases may prove quite
exhausting.

Dean Fortunato Gunit, in his article “How to be a Lawyer” maintains that the basic tools one must have
to study law and pass the bar examinations are the so called three L’s – Language, Logic, and Law.

Language is the tool of the law. It is the instrument by which you understand, analyze, and express the
law. At present, the language of the law in the Philippines is still English. Logic requires critical analysis
which is very important in the study of law. It doesn’t require you to be brilliant as long as you can
accurately evaluate a certain state of facts using logical analysis. Law – the only tool that one will learn
in law school. To know the law, one must continue to read to keep himself abreast with the current laws
and jurisprudence.

The study of law is a serious matter. It entails a great deal of sacrifice, efforts, and expense to belong to
the glamourous profession of law. If you really want to be a lawyer, be prepared to exert every effort to
pass the bar. If you have the qualities and tools needed for the profession, and you are willing to suffer
the pain, then go on and climb the ladder towards the profession of law. Always remember that lawyers
are made, not born.
