Confirmatory Factors Analysis of Tardiness towards Academic Performance

among ANHS-SHS Students

Introduction

Filipino’s were once known to be one of the people who’re always on time but now

a days it has become quite the otherwise. Today it has been known that Filipinos are

always late in any kind of events, especially at their work or even at school. Tardiness is

one of the main problems faced by the students of ANHS-SHS some students arrive at

school when it’s already time for the second subject or when the first subject would about

to end, at least. However, students are too good to invent their individual excuses such

as traffic, part time jobs, household chores, or whatever that they thought that maybe an

appropriate and acceptable reason for them not to get early to class. As a result they tend

to miss out their lessons and activities that would somehow cause their grades to drop

but, not drastically. Late students might also distract the whole class whenever they come

in, might also get reprimanded by the teachers, especially the strict ones, and get

humiliated in front of the whole class.

However, the school attendance policy is created as a part of the school's

commitment on giving the students proper supportive learning class in which will allow

them to fulfill their academic need based upon the strand they chose. According to ETC's

(2014) report, attendance and punctuality policy is very important in ensuring that all the

students could have the full access to the curriculum. A lot of important lessons will be

missed by the student if he or she is late or absent.

Nevertheless, it is the responsibility of the instructors to give and develop an

effective strategies to deal with the behavior of their students Santillano (2014) stated that
psychological theorist considered "personality traits such as low self-esteem and anxiety

could be triggering factors for a student to be late. However, some theorists considered

lateness as an “inborn quality” since our being early or late is “partially biologically

determined”, other experts also believed that some people are “chronically tardy” for the

reason that they consciously and unconsciously get good things from it. Study by

Pimentel and Quijada (2014) Cited in Bilocura (2014) focused on the frequency of use by

the UP Cebu freshmen students of Facebook and a part of the study tackled about the

effect of the famous social networking site to UP Cebu students’ punctuality and

academic performance. They asked the (60) respondent about their use of Facebook and

its effects. The results of the study revealed that, three out of 60 respondents are

always late, eight said they are sometimes late, 12 said they are seldom late and 37

said that they never get late due to late-night use of Facebook.

Hence, student's tardiness and late behavior is considered as an educational

dilemma and somewhat a kind of contagious diseases that could greatly spread and

influence other students that are not used to be late. This could lead them to delayed

requirements that is becoming a chronic illness among students. The significance of the

study is to determine what are the factors analysis of tardiness and how does it affect

towards the academic performance of the students that would somehow, help the

teachers, even the school and faculty members formulate effective strategies to deal in

such behavior to make the students change their behavior.
