CDL Poster on a Duvernay Key Well
Canadian Discovery Ltd. (http://canadiandiscovery.com/) has recently made one of our Duvernay geomechanics posters
(http://digest.canadiandiscovery.com/?q=node/1698) publicly available through its Discovery Digest Journal website
(http://digest.canadiandiscovery.com/) . This poster is an example of the CDL’s integrated geomechanical characterization
work ow for unconventional reservoirs applied to a speci c well in the Kaybob Area, Alberta. It includes the results of
mechanical properties and brittleness calculations, petrophysical analysis, fracture fabric characterization, drilling experience
review, maximum horizontal in-situ stress (SHmax) determination, wellbore integrity modeling/history-matching, and
critically-stressed fractures analysis. My favorite part is the fracture fabric characterization that tries to tie the depth of
observed fractures (that are mostly coring-induced) on the core and image log with rock mechanical and mineralogical data
from sonic logs and petrophysical analysis . The results are interesting as:
i) There exists a strong correlation between mechanical and mineralogical brittleness indices. Nevertheless, both of these
parameters are de ned di erently from the regular brittleness indices used in the industry.
ii) Mechanical properties and brittleness indices can be e ciently used for fracture fabric characterization. In my view, if we
want to nd the characteristics of fraccable rock, the best approach is to nd out where, in reality, the rock has been
fractured (either naturally or induced).
iii) There are quanti able ranges of brittleness indices or mechanical properties that determine the brittle rock that favors
fracturing. Such ranges come very handy when quantitative interpretation (QI) method is implemented for characterization of
brittle rock using seismic data.

One other thing on this poster is the CDL’s graphical representation of drilling experience that I personally like a lot due to its
inclusive and abstract nature. This particular well is probably not the funnest one as it is a simply vertical well that does not
show so many drilling problems but several of the 43 wells that we reviewed in this project showed sever drilling problems
from all di erent types.

Have you ever tried to de ne something that you have spent a good part of your life on understanding and exploring its details in just
one short sentence? If you have, you can understand that it is not an easy job because you need to be abstract and complete
simultaneously. Last time that I tried to nd an inclusive while simple de nition for geomechanics (and everything it deals with) I ended
up with this sentence: "Geomechanics studies the mechanical response of rocks to the events that disturb their initial state." The main
three elements of this de nition are: (i) An 'initial state' de ned by in-situ stresses and ambient pore pressure and temperature. (ii) A
'disturbing event' that can be either natural (i.e., tectonic movement, magma ow, uid ow, hydrocarbon generation, etc.) or human-
induced (examples from petroleum industry are drilling, completion, fracturing, production and injection and thermal operations), and
(iii) Rock's response to the disturbance: how it deforms (constitutive behaviour models) and how it fails (failure criterion) when initial
state changes. Almost all the work done in all di erent geomechanical studies are about characterizing these three elements though
sometimes it may seem di cult to identify them separately as they are usually intertwined.
