MODUL 1_Learning Activity 1: Task 2

TASK 2
1. What personal relation do each sender of the letter to the addressees? Provide evidence from
the letters!
2. What is the tone of each letter? Provide evidences from the letters.

Answer Task 2:
1. a. Based on the context of the letter 1, it can be concluded that the sender and the addressee
are old friends. They are close friends. It can be seen from a statement in the text of the
letter that Aleena as the sender of the letter said “It has been a very long time since we
met or wrote to each other”. So, it is clear that they used to meet each other before.

b. Based on the content of the letter 2, we may conclude that personal relation from this
letter is new contact and the sender wants to befriend with the addressee. We can see
from part of this letter that states:
 “I would like to get to know someone from your country and a friend has told me
that you would like to practice your English.”
 “Could you tell me a bit about yourself and your family?”

c. According to the content of the letter 3, it is clearly described that they are new friends.
We can conclude it from part of the letter where Ivo introduces a bit about his self and his
family.
According to Letter 2 and 3, they seem like they have correlation, letter 3 is written as the
response to letter 2. It can be implied that they, sender and the addressee, have never met
each other before. Letter 2 told that the sender sent this letter to his friend’s friend. The
sender of this letter wanted to improve his English while the addressee (who is the sender
of Letter 3) wants to practice English. One thing to make sure that they have never met
each other is that the sender of Letter 2 asks the addressee to introduce himself and the
addressee replied it in Letter 3.

2. The tone of the three letters above is informal but letter 1 is more friendly than the others.
Maybe because the sender and the addressee of letter 1 are close friends. It can be seen from
the word choice of the letters.
All letters use the word “dear” and “hello” for the opening shows us that it is very casual and
not formal. The closing of the letter 3, the sender said “Anyway, I must go and get on with
my work! “ It tells us that the style of language is not formal. The use of first name only also
indicates an informal situation of the letter. In Letter 1 also tells us that the sender uses word
‘take care’ and ‘love’. Many construction used in the letters also show us the informal tone
or casual language.
Some from letter 1 such as: ”...Please don’t share this with anybody….”, “….I haven’t
heard from you at all….”
Some from letter 3 such as:”…. I'm glad you're interested….”, “….I've already been to a
few places….,” etc.
