iv)Server roles for a wireless to be configured.
v)Managing users and We looked at how to configure various wireless
computers technologies like Wi-Fi and WiMAX.
All these wireless devices come with default IP
addresses, username and password, which we use
to create a peer-to-peer network to establish
connection between the computer and the access
point. Once the access point has been configured,
we can then disconnect it from the computer and
test it.
We configured three main areas on access points
that are: -network (LAN), -wireless (settings), -
DHCP.
WiMAX works a wireless bridge. It interconnects
two places or more but it is mostly used in ISP
companies.
ii)Integrating wired and wireless
Here we were required to set a network using
both wired and wireless connections and also
providing security on that network

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 12

We achieved this by using a Switch, WAP,
Ethernet cables and Computers. We implemented
password and user name for the wireless security
purposes.
iii)Server hardware and server operating system
We were exposed to server hardware and learnt
how to assemble and de-assemble them.
We also learnt ways of installing different server
operating systems like: -server OS 2008 R2, -
server OS 2012 and Linux Red hat server.
iv)Server roles
Here we looked at how server roles function and
we configured a forest and a domain on the
server.
v)Managing users and computers
In company, all computers need to be registered
by the system administrators in order to be
secured from the outsiders or intruders.
So, we managed connect our computers to the
sever and we created users accounts in the server
in order for our computers to log in to the server.

and some of them are: - Decisions about network
administration

 - Data storage, retrieval, and manipulation: With

massive amounts of data being stored, it is vital
the information to be accessible and secured.
Giving users the necessary access to information
and maintaining the integrity of the network,
while keeping the corporation productive is one
of the key roles of the IT department.

 - Implementation and support of computer based

information systems and hardware equipment:
One of the components of information
technology is the equipment necessary to present
information. This may include projectors, screens
and other equipment used for presentations or
trainings. Smart boards, electronic media pieces,
and scanners are included in this grouping.
Establishing hardware sharing – such as sharing a
printer over a network – will be included in the IT
department as well.

 - Installation of new software programs: The IT

department is often responsible for ensuring that
the software programs are installed properly.

 - Technology life cycles such as updates: The

software programs have to be maintained and
updated and functioning as intended.
ii)Power management

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 14

At this point, we looked at the way of determining
system voltages and setting up power backup
systems using Uninterruptable Power Supply
(UPS).
iii)Monitoring power backup systems
For Monitoring of backup power systems, we
used monitoring and automatic shutdown
software like - PQ management system, -Portable
PQ analyzers, -etc...
iv)Advanced network setup
Here, we learnt three things that are: -planning
and designing, -documentation and technical,
modeling and network simulation.
v)Cable termination
Here we looked at the various networking tools.
these included:
- cable tester: this test cable functionality
- Crimping tool: this tool helps terminate cables to
RJs (45 and 11).
- punch down tool: this is used when terminating
cable connections at the data socket and patch
panel.
We have a layout running from the data socket –
patch panel and then to the switch.
We were also exposed to networking tools and
devices, cable termination in structured setting,
terminating patch panels and data sockets, Fixing
patch panels and switches into switch rack.
Making of a straight through Ethernet

Cable:
This cable connects different devices together in
order to communicate. For example: a computer
to a router or a computer to a switch. The
following is the way it is laid out. It has two types:
type A and type B. For straight through
termination, all sides of a cable need to have
same type whether type A or B. If the one side
has A and another side, B then the cable becomes
a crossover cable.

iii)Configuring VLANs any other place using different softwares like: -
Microsoft visio, -archiCAD, -Revit, -etc…
After designing, we implemented it in software in
order to simulate our project and understand
most of the configurations that are used.

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 17

ii)Sharing resources using LAN of WAN
Here, we connected all our computers to the
switch and shared some of our files in order to be
accessed by the computers that are connected to
that switch but we had to configure our
computers so that they could share and access
those files.
We also configured a printer and a scanner in
order to be accessed and used to those
computers that are on that same network.
iii)Configuring VLANs
Configuring VLANs needed an advanced switch
that we did not have.
So we used a simulation tool in order to configure
our VLANs where we integrated security for
restricting different departments to access data
that are not supposed to be accessed by them.
Week 4 i)Setting up voice LANs i)Setting up voice LANs
ii)Voip configuration To set up a voice LAN, we used analog voice

iv)Assigning policies on iii)Group policy management (computers and
different domains users)
Here, we gave access only to the computers that
were registered to the server by using their mac
address.
With the users’ restriction, we used
organizational units in order to deny / allow

access to the folders and files shared on any
organizational unit and denying / allowing
communication among them.
iv)Assigning policies on different domains
We gave restrictions to the domains we created
earlier in a way that some domains were able to
communicate and others were disabled.

I. You must have IIS (Internet Information

Server) installed.
NNTP and SMTP services will be installed.

II. Make sure your networking has DNS

setup.

III. You must have Active Directory setup.

Configuring the exchange server 2008:

Unlike the other server roles which are within
the server operating system this specific service
requires a different license. Thus needs a special
installation CD. Run the Exchange Server Setup

We also added roles and features. Then I created

organization units, users and group police
management.

During this exercise, I looked at errors occurred

which shown failures of some roles and features.
So the correction was done by configuring basic
authentication, windows authentication, digest
authentication and dynamic content compression
I completed all configurations under management
Tools-II6 management compatibility.
After setting up the exchange server, we were
required to setup client machines to send and
receive mails. Outlook is used
as the client application to access mails from the
exchange server. Once the user has logged onto
the domain the system was trying to
automatically fetch account details and settings
in.
iii)Building websites
Here, we did a small website that had no
database on it but it was made of hypertext
markup language (html), cascading style sheet
(CSS) and java script (JS).
The website we did was made from scratch.
iv)Edit existing websites
Editing websites needs the understanding of
codes and the way the website is designed.
Therefore, we downloaded some websites that
we were going to edit and each one chose a

website to edit.
v)Integrating database on a website
We learnt how to embed database on our website
we created from scratch.
Here, we had to PHP and MYSQL in order for our
website to read database.
Week 6 i)Introduction to oracle i)Introduction to oracle
ii)Creating database in Oracle is one of the most used database
oracle management in companies because of its security
iii)Building application in and ease of use. They introduced to us different
oracle based on database types of oracle software that are used for
iv)Service desk database management and the way of interacting
administration with them.
v)Service desktop ii)Creating database in oracle
application Here, we were instructed in order to do so
because the software we used was new to us and
we could not do it by our own. We created one
database and provided password for security
purposes. On that database, we created tables in
it and inserted data in them.
iii)Building application in oracle based on
database
After creating database and tables, we went
ahead and created an application based on them
and we tested it in order to understand the way
that software operates.
We did all these using graphical user interface and
command line for some tables for more
understanding of it.

iv)Service desk administration and
v) Service desktop application
For this section, we looked at duties and
responsibilities of service desk helper.
For example: to provide lines technical support,
answering support queries via phones, email, chat
and web.
-To maintain the high degree of customer service
for all support queries and adhere to all service
management principles.
-To take ownership of users’ problems and be
proactive when dealing with users’ issues.
-Identifying the issue and categorizing /
prioritizing the incident.
-Strong interpersonal skills are a prerequisite.
-Ability to work effectively in dispersed team and
individually, etc.
Week 7 i)ISP core network design i)ISP core network design

iii)ESXI server environment designed its architecture on Microsoft vision and
implemented it on GNS3 software as our
simulator.
ii)Server virtualization and
iii) ESXI server environment
Server virtualization gave us an idea of how a
company can protect its data by installing and
accessing all their servers and windows/Linux
client OS on one hardware that has VMware ESXI
server using software called VSphere or VI-client.

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 22

We managed to have four machines running on
one set of hardware and all of us had enough
space to install an operating system. This
technology saves a lot on hardware resources and
power.
Server Virtualization includes;

- Microsoft developed Windows Server 2008

R2
- Windows Server 2012 R2
- VM ware VSphere solution ESXI, 345
Week 8 i)DHCP in a router i)DHCP in a router
ii)Computer repairing Here, we were asked to configure cisco router in
iii)Peer to peer network order for our computers to pick IP addresses from
it. Therefore, we configured a DHCP on our router
using a console cable and a software called putty.
After testing it with our computers, we were able
to get IPs from it.
ii)Computer repairing
To repair a computer, one needs to know the
problem of it and to understand all the
components that make a computer in order to
know which component is damaged.
We started by des-assembling a computer and
looked at all the components it is made of and the
way of replacing some of them. After that, we
assembled it again and checked if it was still
functioning.
iii)Peer to peer network

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 23

Peer to peer network is a way of sharing data
offline using a computer to a computer or
connecting computers to a switch.
However, in order to share data offline, those
computers need to be configured. We took
folders we wanted to share and made some
configuration on them.
Once someone accesses them, he/she can map
them and look like drives on his/her computer.
We also went to the field at Gombe junior school
where we found two buildings that needed to be
integrated internet and LANs but unfortunately,
money was not yet released in order to start that
job.

2.4 The organization’s strength and opportunities

ICT Skills Center are leaders in ICT Skills Development Training. They offer various skills
development programs designed to develop essential skills and build an effective and efficient
workforce, technically sound and competent with hands-on skills to take up various ICT roles.
2.5 Challenges faced by the organization
- Company lacks some products that would increase facilities offered for customers if they
were present.
- Trainees spoil companies’ equipment unknowingly.
- More branches needed country wide to take the services to the people.
- The majority of people are not aware about the products of ISC. This is due to their low
services of promotional activity.
- There is low level of motivation in the employees of the company.

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 24

- ISC Management adopted responsive approach that respond to the market very slow and
are reluctant to take initiative before the problem arises.
2.6 Handling of Challenges by the organization
- Implementation of the rules, regulations and policies ought to be ensured for better
management.
- Human resource development needs a lot of input.
- Physical infrastructure should be improved.
- Advances to the non-productive investments should be stopped.
- For the development of the human capital, the company should conduct a series of
training program to achieve the mission

SECTION 3:
SELF EVALUATION

3.1 What I liked most in my work

From the beginning of my practicum to the end, I was impressed on how organized ICT Skills
Center was and their good manner of welcoming us. I felt like being in a family and that helped
me to open up myself to others. During my training, I was able to understand ways of
implementing, outside, what I have learnt at Namasuba College of Commerce.
ICT skills center staffs were always on time, they were always ready to help me whenever I
asked for assistance from them and their interaction with us were productive to us.

Email: Mpangasam2@gmail.com +256703213923 | Internship Report 25

3.2 The challenges I faced during my internship and how I overcame them

3.2.1 Challenges I faced

During my period of training, I had to always travel from Entebbe to Najjanankumbi. That was a
challenge for me because I had to wake up very early in order not to be late at my practicum-
training place. The cost of transport was also a challenge because of the increasing of the taxi
prices during my practicum.
My first days on field were very hard for me but I managed to adhere because of the guidance
and help of my colleagues and my instructor of the field.

3.2.2 The way I handled my challenges

Some of my challenges needed time in order to be solved like waking up earlier and feeling
comfortable at work. The first challenge was solved by getting used to the time of getting
awake and sleeping earlier. The second one was solved by getting used to the work place, to my
colleagues and to the tasks given to me.
The challenge of transport was solved by my family because I could not solve it by myself for I
had no job that would provide to me money.

3.3 What I disliked most in my work

During my practicum, I expected to experience practically all the materials used in networking
like PE routers, VoIP phones, data warehousing and others but the company I was doing my
practicum in, had no such materials.

3.4 The areas of strength in the academic program done at BU in the relation to my
practicum.
The areas of strength during my studies at BU such as rules of dressing codes, punctuality,
attitude and knowledge in networking theory helped me to adapt myself at my work
environment and be confident in doing tasks assigned to me.

3.5 The areas of weakness in academic school and the relation to my practicum
Because of less practical skills that BU gives us, it was difficult to me to configure some devices
like servers, managing oracle environment, ISP business solutions and others. I could not also
identify practically some devices though I knew them by name and the way they operate.

3.6 The way I practically applied the knowledge learnt at BU

All the knowledge I got at BU helped me at my work place because I had to apply them on
different tasks assigned to me like configuring a wireless access point, routers, terminating
cables and many others. I had first to explain what I was going to configure before applying
them on their devices in order not to spoil them.

3.7 Areas in which the current program offered at school can be strengthened
The current program offered at school should be strengthened most in practical skills as it does
in theoretical skills because computer networking is done mostly in practical.

3.8 What I learnt during the entire period of my practicum

The eight weeks I passed at ICT skills center were fruitful for me because I learnt so many
things. During my practicum, I was exposed to new skills and learnt a lot in various practical
aspects where I increased my experience in the IT infrastructure Administration and
management, voice LAN, advanced network setup, advanced simulation tools like GNS3, power
management systems, web application development, pc installation, repairs and maintenance,
structured cabling and networking.
I learnt how one could install different operating systems virtually in one computer that has
VMware ESXI in it in order for other computers to access it using VSphere software.
We were able to install three operating systems at the same time.
I learnt also how to configure servers, PABX installations, hierarchical design of complex
networks, ISP Business Solutions, multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) and responsibilities for
the IT service desk helper. (CISCO, 2007)

SECTION 4:
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Conclusion
My internship at ICT skills center gave me new knowledge especially in practical skills and the
way I should behave at work. I have achieved most of my expectation of what I wanted to know
in IT infrastructure where I learnt how to configure servers and routers, PABX installations that
deals with voice phones, and so many other things.
The eight weeks I spent at ICT skills center were very productive and inspiring for me because I
managed to understand how the world of IT operates.

4.2 Recommendations to ICT skills center

ICT skills center needs to buy more devices that they do not have like VoIP phones, PE routers,
advanced switches and stabilizers in order to secure their devices from getting damaged. It
should also provide internet to the trainees so that they can make researches to the errors that

occur when configuring different devices and other researches for increasing knowledge in IT
infrastructure.

4.3 Recommendation to Namasuba College of Commerce

Namasuba College of Commerce should collaborate with local and international companies in
order to provide places where students can have their industrial attachment without struggling
looking for many places. The school of business is a school where by almost everything is done
practically. So practical skills should be higher than theoretical skills at Namasuba College of
Commerce. Partnership should be arranged with such companies like ICT skills Centre and
others to conduct students through development programs, IT skills and make students feel
comfortable on the field.

Namasuba College of Commerce should reduce cost of industrial attachment charges because
students spend a lot of money during their practicum like costs of transport, costs of meal at
work and some other materials.
