A composite material is a structural material that consists of two or more combined

constituents which are combined at macroscopic level. One of its constituents is called the
reinforcing phase and the other one, in which the reinforcing phase material is embedded, is
called the matrix. The matrix phase is light but weak. The reinforcing phase is strong and hard
and may not be light in weight. For example, in concrete reinforced with steel the matrix
phase is concrete and the reinforcing phase is steel. In graphite/epoxy composites the graphite
fibers are the reinforcing phase and the epoxy resin is the matrix phase. The following
properties can be improved by forming a composite material: Strength, Stiffness, Corrosion
resistance, Fatigue life ,Thermal conductivity & Acoustical insulation .

QUESTION 01 : Answer the following questions

1/ Translate the underlined words

2/ Quote the different characteristics of both matrix and reinfort.

3/ Remove from the text 2 examples of composites materials

4/ What is the role of forming a composite material?

5/ What are the conditions to obtain a composite material?

QUESTION 02: Translate the following paragraph into French

Heat Treatment of Steel Steels can be heat treated to produce a great variety of
microstructures and properties. Generally, heat treatment uses phase transformation during
heating and cooling to change a microstructure in a solid state. In heat treatment, the
processing is most often entirely thermal and modifies only structure. Thermomechanical
treatments, which modify component shape and structure, and thermochemical treatments
which modify surface chemistry and structure, are also important processing approaches
which fall into the domain of heat treatment.
