Synopsis: The film “5 centimeters per second” is an anime drama that is written and
directed by Makoto Shinkai and is about the childhood romance of Takaki Toono( Kenji
Mizuhashi) and Akari Shinohora( Yoshimi Kondou, Ayaka Onoue). The film has three
episodes; episode one begins with Akari saying that the speed at which the cherry blossom
falls is at five centimeters per second. From this, it is seen as a relevant reference to the title
of film. It then starts to focus on the two individuals, both of which are still young but have
already established a close relationship with each other. However, when Takaki graduated
from elementary school, He and Akari started to separate and start their own lives. The film
then moves on to the present time, Akari has written a letter to Takaki and asks if Takaki still
remembers her. During this time, Takaki was attending middle school in Tokyo while Akari
had to move to another city because her parents’ jobs required them to do so. When Takaki
received Akari’s letters, he would write back a letter and this was how they kept in touch
with each other. One day, Takaki found out that he and his family had to move to another
city called Kagoshima. When Takaki found out about this, he knew that it would be too far
for him to visit Akari, if ever he’s at Kagoshima and because of this, he decides to visit
Akari. When Takaki was on the way to Iwafune, a harsh snowstorm delayed Takaki but it
didn’t stop him from seeing Akari after so long. Episode two starts by introducing a new
character, Kanae Sumita(Satomi Hanamura), who likes Takaki but is too shy to admit it to
him. The second episode is all about Sumita and Takaki and mainly focuses on Sumita. In
this episode, Takaki is already in high school in Tanegashima. Later on, Sumita kept noticing
that Takaki would always think and stare off into the distance and it made her curious. The
episode finishes off with Takaki and Sumita walking to Sumita’s home until night and Sumita
crying herself to sleep. The third and final episode is about the lives of the Takaki and Akari
and how they are doing. In this episode, the three characters are now living their own lives.
Takaki is now a computer programmer back in Tokyo while Akari is now getting married to
someone else.
