What Will Happen

When Jesus Comes to Town?
Lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
John 4:35
Time and destination change!
Often, we have been reminded to pray for revival. Even as I write this article, I
am privileged to be in a series of revival meetings with several of our MBA
churches. Typically, we pray for the revival and have the meeting. God speaks,
Neal Hughes
Director of Missions and the church is encouraged. That being said, what will happen when the
Holy Spirit of God sends His mercy drops from heaven upon the churches
of the River Region and beyond, resulting in a transformation of biblical
proportions?
First, let’s understand the biblical plan. Our invitation for God to change our churches and our city
must be precipitated by a heart change. The Bible says in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are
called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked
ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Do you see
the condition before the conjunction? Is your church calling upon the name of the Lord as though
your very life depends upon it? Are you willing to lose your pride and rights for the humility of
Christ and His servant spirit? Are you earnestly praying and seeking the face of God and His
countenance? Are you turning from your prejudices, your preferences, your traditions, your non-
kingdom attitude, and confessing your sins before a holy Lord? Friends, only then will revival appear.
Only then will the transformation of Christ Jesus usher in revitalization and life change for a church, a
community, a city, a region, and perhaps the world. As the song says, “Lord, send a revival, but let it
begin with me.”
In John 4, community “life change” first took place in an unregenerate woman. Salvation led to her
influence on a town, resulting in the fellowship of Jesus with new believers. The revival continued in
Acts 8 when Phillip visited the same place. Scripture says, “Philip went down to a city in Samaria
and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed,
they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and
many who were paralyzed, or lame were healed. So, there was great joy in that city” (Acts 8:5-8).
In 1972, I experienced at my home church in Macon, Georgia (Shurlington Baptist Church) an
outpouring of God’s Spirit as I had never experienced, nor have seen since. One weekend, a season
of intercession and sharing of the gospel by
the youth of the church resulted in an all-
night Saturday prayer meeting that went
into Sunday church, until 3:00 Sunday
afternoon. That is some miracle when Baptists
miss Sunday lunch! The rain from heaven
resulted in over 200 salvations, numerous
rededications, and an impact on the church and
community that followed my entire high school
journey. Recently, the youth of that day had a
reunion in Macon. When asking the now sixty-
somethings what most significantly impacted
them from their youth group days, we were all
unanimous in referring to this weekend.
Hallelujah!
As your Director of Missions, and having
witnessed what could happen when Jesus comes
to town, my repetitive prayer is, “God will you
do it again?” Our churches need revival. Our
city needs hope. Our neighbors need Jesus.
And, our nation needs a spiritual awakening. It
goes without saying, “O God, would you do it
again?” Let us begin at the cross and follow the
prescription of 2 Chronicles 7:14. Mary and I Ministry Position Available
