EROSION

I. OBJECTIVES
 This experiment aims to show how erosion works with the help of water, wind
and freezing temperatures.
 To show the different natural phenomenon that may cause soil erosion.

II. MATERIALS

 3 Containers (Shoe box size)

 Soil
 Spray Bottle of Water
 Straw
 Ice

III. PROCEDURE

1. Pile a soil onto one side of each containers to make a slope (or hill)
2. Stimulate water erosion by using spray bottle of water. Spray the water onto the top of the
top of the soil in one container. What happens to the water? What happens to the soil? The
water ran down the hill and push some of the soil out of the way. It carved a channel in the
dirt.
3. Stimulate wind erosion by using a straw. Blow air through the straw onto the top of the
hill. What happens to the soil?
4. Stimulate glacial erosion using ice cubes. Place a few ice cubes at the top of the hill. What
happens to the ice? What happens to the soil?

IV. GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. What are the different agent of erosion?

There are four main agents of erosion: water, wind, gravity and ice
2. How does the wind, water, ice, and gravity cause the movements of the rocks on Earth’s
surface?
Wind causes erosion by destroying the present soil formation. It depends on
the force of the wind like how the one who performs the activity blew in the
straw. The greater the force the more powerful it is to destroy the soil
formation.
Water causes erosion in a way where it makes some parts of the soil to be
detached and to be moved in the same way as the water flows
Ice and gravity. With the help of gravity tiny chunks of ice moves over time.
And as it moves some soil was moved by the movement of the tiny chunks of
ice based from the experiment
3. How does the wind, water, ice, and gravity shapes Earth’s surface?
By the force present in this elements they caused erosions. And by that
different occurrence of erosion causes the earth's surface to change its shape
4. Describe what happened to the soil when water was sprayed? When wind was blow? When
ice was placed on top?
When water was sprayed in the soil, some soil particles were scattered. Some
parts of the soil had change its shape in response to the force present in the
sprayed water. Similar when the wind is sprayed, but in this there's more soil
that was scattered. And when the ice was placed on top, the soil moves, but it
is much more slower compared to the other two process.
5. Differentiate slow movement and fast movement on Earth’s surface. Give example for
both.
Slow movement on the Earth's surface are occurrences in which it takes time
to take effect or to have a result due to, maybe the properties of the involve
materials in here .For example is the ice placed on top or the glacial erosion.
Since it's solid it's movements aren't too fast, but it still causes erosion. It only
takes time.
Fast movement in the earth's surface are occurrences that can happen
instantly. It’s result and effect will be known immediately. For example is the
wind and water erosion performed in the activity. After performing the
process of spraying and blowing the soil immediately moves in response to the
force present in that two process.
