EARTHING

All earthing to be installed / executed in compliance Eskom’s specification and drawings.

Earthing will be installed using 10mm stranded Bare Copper Earth Wire(BCEW) connected
to 1.2m long 10mm earth spikes with an earth clamp at intervals of maximum 20m and
linked to the main earthing at corner posts and main gate.

The 10mm stranded BCEW to be connected to earth spike with earth clamps.

The 10mm Earth rod to be buried below ground level and connected to fence poles with a
10mm compression lug fixed to the pole

 The earth lug to be fixed to poles with a 10mm bolt at surface above the installed
concrete and to be covered with concrete to a minimum of 100mm.
 Approval by client for earth spike positions at 20m Intervals maximum
 Excavations to be done by hand (shovel and pick) and / or machine (TLB).Detect
cables near substation, then barricade and excavate.
 Insert 10mm diameter 1,2m long earth rod type electrodes vertically into the ground
to a depth with the top 500mm below general ground level.
 Soil from excavations to be reused for backfill
 All excavations to be barricaded during construction for safety.

Installation Method/Procedure

 Insert 10mm - 1.2m solid copper rod into ground at least 500mm below ground level
 Insert earth clamp at the top of the 10mm solid copper earth spike.
 Fix 10mm flexible stranded bare copper earth wire(BCEW) to earth spike clamp
 Remove paint form the pole surface to ensure good contact surface at drill hole
position.
 Drill 11mm diameter hole into fence pole for earth lug fixed with a 10mm bolt and nut
above the installed concrete level. Connect stranded BCEW to the 10mm lug at the
pole. Spray copper coated spray then cover to at least 100mm above concrete
apron.
 Ensure that good connection is achieved at both lug and Earth Clamp points.
 Client to inspect connections and 10mm solid copper earth rod before backfilling.
 Excavated material to be used as backfill. Backfill to excavations in layers of 150mm
and compacted every layer.
 Earthing tests to be conducted at selected poles with an Earth Resistance Tester.
