Transitioning (BP>BPO) - Session 09

Training Session Plan for 17+ year olds

INTRODUCTION
Each week you will receive a training session plan designed for the age group you are coaching. All plans are consistent with
the FFA National Curriculum and are set out in the format “Warm Up or Passing Practice, Positioning Games, Game Training
Component, Training Game”. In the Performance Phase, three sessions of 75-90 minutes and one game is considererd a safe
maximum weekly work load. Sessions should be designed around solving a “football problem”.

“WARM UP OR PASSING PRACTICE”

After a 5 minute welcome/explanation. Preferably with a ball, for example passing practices, & if possible “theme related”
including a level of decision-making. Avoid warm ups that are more like conditioning sessions. 15-20 mins

FOOTBALL PROBLEM
When our team loses possession of the ball it is taking too long to win
the ball back.
We need a quick reaction from all players and to press the ball quickly.
Our team needs to regain possession immediately after the ball is lost.
(Transition Ball Possession to Ball Possession Opponent – Middle)

WARM UP
Players start in two teams of six and divided in three pairs. Both groups
are passing in order of one to four. Progress to one pair defending
passively. Pairs will change on the coach’s call.

S.O C.H.A.N.G.E I.T

If your players are finding the session too easy or hard, the solution is to use the
S.O C.H.A.N.G.E I.T philosophy.

Safe: Safe physical environment (field, obstacles such as sprinklers) and safe space to learn
Organised: Prepared sessions and ensuring you have all the equipment you need to encourage participation.
Coaching Style: Provide feedback in the drink break or change of activities without interrupting the game.
How You Score / Win: Increase opportunities to score.
Area: Increase or decrease the game challenges by changing the size/shape of the playing area.
Numbers: Use different team numbers to overload the advantage of one team, or vary number of turns at goal.
Game Rules: Change the rules slightly, for example no tackling, minimum number of passes.
Equipment: Vary the equipment used, for example a bigger goal, smaller goal, more goals.
Inclusion: Engage players in modifying the practices; provide options the can choose from to encourage ownership.
Time: Reduce or extend the time to perform actions.

POSITIONING
Progression: GAME 1 ORGANISATION
In an area 30m x 30m, there is a 4 v 4 situation. The attacking team retains possession with the help of the outside players, while
the defending players try to win the ball and then dribble through 1 of the 4 sides.
There can be an aim for the attacking team to complete a certain number of passes in order to win a point.
When possession is lost, the outside players enter the marked area and together with the inside players try to regain possession
before the defending players manage to dribble the ball through the lines.
The attacking players inside use 2 touches while the outside attacking players play with 1 touch.

POSITIONING GAME 2 ORGANISATION

In an area 40m x 40m, there is a 5 v 5 situation.
The attacking team retains possession with the help of the 2 outside players; aim to dribble through the end line.
When the attackers lose the ball, 1 of the outside players enters the area to help his teammates to regain the ball within 5
seconds. Once this is achieved, they should pass the ball to the outside player in order to start a new attack.
The defending team aims to win the ball and then retain possession for more than 5 seconds themselves (1 point), to run the
ball through the end line (3 points) or both. If the ball goes out of play, the game restarts with the outside players in possession.
Only 1 outside player can enter the area during the ball possession to ball possession opponent transition. The outside players
are limited to 1 touch throughout.

Progression:
ORGANISATION
2 teams play an 11 v 11 game in 2/3 of a pitch. The game has 2 phases.
PHASE 1: The attacking players try to carry out some set patterns of play when building up while the defending
players shift and act in a passive way defensively. During this set pattern, the ball is passed on purpose to 1 of
the defending players.
Once a defending player has possession, the game changes to a normal competitive game with the attacking
players aiming to win the ball back within 5 seconds and the defenders trying to score. This phase can be run for
5-10 minutes.
PHASE 2: A regular game in which the attacking players aim to score and if they lose the ball, they should try to
regain possession within 5 seconds. The defenders try to win the ball and score themselves.
