In this millennial era, the plastic-made material is increasingly used by public. Plastic is
one of the biggest material that use by human in this world. Plastic usually using because it is
easy to mold into shape when soft and cheap for the industry and daily life use. Plastic was
introduced by Alexander Parkes in 1862. Since that day plastic is widely used for community
needs. Plastic becomes a material that can be used in various ways. For example, plastic can
be used as a basic material for making household appliances.
Not only can be used for making household appliances, There are so many used by plastic
in this daily life. plastic can be used for other needs. There are so many materials that made
from plastic in the television, cell phone, sound system, and the floor. Plastic is also used for
preventing gas from escaping pressurized soda bottles. Plastic is also used for material that
build the transportation, for example in the seating, paneling, instrument enclosures and
surface covering in the trains, planes, automobiles and ship. Therefore in this millenials era
will be very different without using plastic.
Because the benefit that offer by using plastic, the percentage of usable plastic in some
country is increasing from year to year. Based on data from ScienceMag, the used of plastic
in the world increased from 1950 to 2015. If it is calculates, the biggest country that used
plastic based on the production per capita is in Kuwait (0,69 kg), Guyana (0,59 kg), German
(0,49 kg), Ireland (0,43 kg), Dutch (0,42 kg), and America (0,34 kg). In indonesia, plastic is
also used by many people in their daily life. It is caused indonesia be the one of the biggest
country that produces plastic waste. Around 15% of waste in indonesia is contain plastic.
Beside the benefit that offer of using plastic in daily life and in industry, plastic can also
have a negative effect, especially for environment. Plastic can cause pollution in the
environment. It is because plastic takes a long time for degradation. When plastic is
incinerated, it is cause gases that can threaten for the enviroment and make the quality of air
environment decrease. plastic can cause soil and groundwater pollution, because when the
plastic that contained by the soil ravel, plastic can be toxic in the soil. It is also can make the
groundwater polluted because plastic can contain a toxic contaminant that can be dissolved
when the rain water passed through it. When the plastic is thrown in the surface water, plastic
can cause the blockage of surface water and also can cause flooding in the area near the
surface water. Plastic waste can also cause death in animals. An animal or marine organisms
simply can’t tell the difference of plastic and food. Because of it these animals full their
stomachs with plastic. Based on the data that taken in 2019 there is 92% of all marine life
which encounter ocean debris is exposed to plastic and 10% of this ingest the plastic.
The Preventation of pollution from plastic waste can be reduced with several ways. For
example, we can use our shopping bag as a place to put our groceries. This way can cause the
percentage of using plastic bag decrease. In another way we can use stainless steel straw to
drink to decrease the using of plastic material. We can also change our habit of using wet
wipes. It is because the wet wipes also contain the resin of plastic. Buy the product that place
in a glass or paper, avoid the product that uses plastic as their container.
We know that the habit of used the goods made from plastic material is difficult to
eliminate in daily life. Therefore, try to reduce its use slowly by using the other items that
easy to recycle and not harmful for our environment. Because with the small change like this
will bring significant changes in the future. Just like George Bernard says “Progress Is
Impossible Without Change, And Those Who Cannot Change Their Mind Cannot Change
Anything”. The necessity of using plastic-made material has many benefits, but the benefits
that offered by using plastic is not comparable with the consequences of plastic waste.
