ROMANTIC - The romance novel or romantic novel is a literary genre.

Novels in this genre place their


primary focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an
"emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.

HISTORICAL - Historical novel, a novel that has as its setting a period of history and that attempts to
convey the spirit, manners, and social conditions of a past age with realistic detail and fidelity (which is in
some cases only apparent fidelity) to historical fact.

REALISTIC - A type of novel that places a strong emphsis on the truthful representation of the actual in
fiction. Tenerally, the realist is a believer in pragmatism, and the truth he seeks to find and express is a
relativistic truth, associated with discernible consequences and verifiable by experience.

Element of Novel

CHARACTERIZATION - it is in the initial stage in which the writer introduces the character with
noticeable emergence. After introducing the character, the writer often talks about his behavior; then, as
the story progresses, the thought-processes of the character.

Setting - is both the time and geographic location within a narrative, either nonfiction or fiction. A
literary element, the setting helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story. Setting has been
referred to as story world or to include a context (especially society) beyond the immediate surroundings
of the story.

DIALOGUE - is the speech of fiction, the talk between two or more characters. It is speech appropriate
for the story, verbal communication that works with and for, not against, the fiction. Good dialogue
draws the reader into an imaginary world and works to keep her there.

PLOT - is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story, or the main part of a story. It is
known as the foundation of a novel or story, around which the characters and settings are built. It is
meant to organize information and events in a logical manner. When writing the plot of a piece of
literature, the author has to be careful that it does not dominate the other parts of the story.
POINT OF VIEW- It is the angle of considering things, which shows us the opinion or feelings of the
individuals involved in a situation. In literature, point of view is the mode of narration that an author
employs to let the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a story.

SYMBOLISM - is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities, by giving them symbolic meanings that
are different from their literal sense. Generally, it is an object representing another, to give an entirely
different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. Sometimes, however, an action, an event or
a word spoken by someone may have a symbolic value.

THEME - The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief
about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel? This belief, or idea, transcends cultural
barriers. It is usually universal in nature. When a theme is universal, it touches on the human experience,
regardless of race or language. It is what the story means. Often, a piece of writing will have more than
one theme.

LITERARY TECHNIQUES

BACKSTORY - past events that add meaning to current circumstances.

FLASHBACK - taking characters back to the beginning of the tale.

FLASHFORWARD - also called "prolepsis", an interjected scene that temporarily jumps narrative forward
in time.
FORESHADOWING - hinting events to occur later.

PLOT TWIST - unexpected change in the direction or expected outcome of the plot.

SIDE STORY - background narrative that explains the world of the main story.
