Here in the Philippines there are different types of families. There are families who are
wealthy but are always busy with career and making a living. Others are single parents and
there are also those who really need to work extra hours because usually their salary is
insufficient. Most of the time, the parents are unable to care for their children because of work.
Children grow up with other people taking care of them instead of their own parents. This is the
usual situation of families in the Philippines. The Family setting in the Philippines is commonly
atypical.

In the movie “Inang Yaya”, The 2 families which are Norma and her daughter Rubi, and May
and Noel and their daughter Louise can show that the parents of the children are not the ones
who mainly take care of their respective child. With Norma, her daughter Rubi was taken care
of her grandmother at first, and even though she lived with her mom, most of the time she had
to be independent as well because her mother Norma had to work first. She was taking care of
Louise and she also had chores to accomplish. With Louise, both her parents were always away
and busy with work. Louise was watched by her yaya Norma most of the time and was even
closer to her yaya than to her parents.

Having absent parents can both have negative effects to the child and positive ones. Negative
effects can include the child being distant to her own parents and they are unable to build a
trusting and loving relationship with each other. They often don’t have a role model to follow
and this can lead the child to have negative attitudes or behaviors in the future. Most of the
time when the parents try to discipline them, they are unable to do so because the child does
not see his or her parent as an authority and often are disobeyed and disrespect by the child.
Since the child does not have a support system, he or she can also develop depression because
no one is there to help them or be there to open up to. Despite the negatives, there can also be
positive outcomes from having absentee parents. The child often becomes independent and
grows up to be responsible. They can make mature decisions for themselves and since their

parents aren’t there, they can become responsible since they have to do everything for
themselves.
