Is there a cinema?

Pairwork: Ask and answer

 Students ask their partner questions to find
the similarities and differences between the
two town maps. Copy one sheet per pair and
cut into A and B.
 Review places in a town by asking students
to describe what places are in the town they
live in. Write the places on the board.
 Put students into pairs and give each pair a
worksheet. Make sure they can’t see each
other’s half of the sheet.
 Hold up the worksheet and explain that the
pictures are different and they need to find
the similarities and differences between the
two towns. Do an example (pointing to the
Useful phrases) and elicit a question about
the map you are holding.
 Give students five minutes to ask and
answer about their pictures. Monitor and
check that they are using the correct
language.
 Students compare their pictures and check
that they correctly identified the similarities
and differences.
 Do class feedback by asking individual
students about what they have on their map.

Answers:
Similarities: Both of the maps have a café, a
bookshop, a bridge and a river.
Differences: Map A has an office building, a
cinema, a library, two cafés and a market.
There are three trees.
Map B has a shopping centre, a monument,
two restaurants and a theatre. There are two
trees.

Extension
Use the map to practise giving directions. Tell
students to identify a starting point and then
give directions to a place on the map (that they
think of but don’t say). Their partner follows the
directions and identifies the place.
