What do you think is the most popular sport in
Australia? Cricket? Rugby? Well, in fact, after
football, netball is the most popular team sport in
Australia. Over 450,000 people play it. Australia is a
netball-mad nation.
In netball, there are two teams of seven players.
The aim of the game is to score goals through a ring
like a basketball hoop. It’s a bit like basketball, but
you can’t hold the ball for more than three seconds
and you can’t run with the ball. Only two players can
score goals: the goal shooter and the goal attack.
Australia and New Zealand both have very
successful netball teams. Every year at the Netball
World Cup, the final is usually between Australia
and New Zealand. Australia’s ‘Diamonds’ won the
last World Cup but several other countries played
very well including England, South Africa and
Jamaica. A player from Malawi, Mwayi Kumwenda,
won the player of the tournament trophy. She
scored an amazing 351 goals in eight games in ten
days!
