Reading Students to the Future: a Teacher’s Responsibility
The paper entitled “The Problem of Reading and Reading Culture
Improvement of Students-Bachelors of Elementary Education in Modern High Institution” presented some useful methods of reading culture improvement such as brainstorming method, theatrical premiere method, group discussion method, and creative uphold of the read books method. Meanwhile, the paper also presented the status of the undergraduate elementary education system when it comes to reading. Most of them accordingly, like to read books by means of technology rather than the library. Also, most of the students read literature due to profession-related activities. Lastly, according to the answers of the students, the level of erudition in the modern society is average.
While reading the paper, I have encountered two sentences which
in one way or the other struck me the most. First, “The main thing that unites all scientists who write about the problem of reading is the idea of self-development, self-study, self- improvement through reading books.” It means that there is much in reading than just decoding written words. When I was in High School, my mom brought home out-dated books from the school she worked at. I used to browse them and when I find interesting topics, I would sit down and read it comprehensively. Unknowingly, it started my passion in reading. I started reading pocketbooks and became familiar with how words go together. With that I was able to join the journalism club of the school. I was also able to understand ideas from the different disciplines. I also became more confident on oral and written activities. These are just some of the benefits I had from reading which I just realized after reading the paper. I am grateful that until now, I still have the habit of reading online and offline articles may it be for profession or for leisure purposes. In a nutshell, with proper reading, we can make a better version of us.
Second, “A huge role in the formation of proper, thoughtful
reading belongs to the school teacher.” I am now a teacher and this sentence reminded me one of my biggest responsibilities as a language teacher. We have to admit that much is expected from an English teacher such as but not limited to being a walking dictionary, grammar checker, and pronunciation master. If you cannot do any of these, or if one of your students failed on these, the society would see you as an unworthy English Teacher. That is why I always keep myself updated with the strategies applicable to my students. I always keep reading for myself and now for my students. As the saying goes, one cannot give what he/she does not have.
Reading can never be separated with learning. It can be compared
to a bridge; you can never reach learning without crossing it. Moreover, as teachers, we should always remember that we are responsible for the learning of our students. They are the evidences of how successful we are in our profession.
