let’s have an activity. This activity is
called

“Fix me I am broken”

I have a broken picture of vehicles.

Each group will be given one and I
want you to fix it for me.After you fix it,
at the back of the pictures there are
unfamiliar words. Let us all discover
the meaning of each word.

“Are you ready?”

If yes, say “Aye, Aye Captain!”

“Aye, Aye Captain!!!”

“I can’t hear you…. Say it again!”

“Aye, Aye Captain!!!”

Once your group is done, clap your
hands three times. The fastest group
with the correct work will have a prize.

Unfamiliar Words:
Cane
Bargain - the long, hard, hollow stem of
Wicked particular plants such as bamboo
Bold - Agreement and deal
Boasting - Evil or morally wrong
Ashamed - showing an ability to take risks;
confident and courageous.
- excessively proud and self-
satisfied talk about one's
achievements, possessions, or
abilities
- embarrassed or guilty because of
one's actions, characteristics, or
associations.

“In the puzzle that you fixed, what kind

of vehicle is that?”
“Taxi”
That’s correct! Very good!

Now that you already unlock the

activity we can now proceed to our
new lesson which is related to our
activity earlier.

3.2. Lesson Proper

A. Analysis

Someone texted me.

“Do you want to know who texted

me? If yes, say Aye, Aye Captain!”
“Aye, Aye Captain!”

“I can’t hear you….!”

“Aye, Aye Captain!”

It is my friend, Mrs. Catherin Lim.

“Do you know Mrs. Catherine Lim?”
“No”
(Answer may vary)
“You don’t know her? She is a friend
of mine. “

“Class I want you to meet Mrs.

Catherine Lim.” (The picture flashed in screen T.V)

Mrs. Catherine Lim was born in

Malaysia in 1942, Lim came from a
large family of 14 children – four boys
and ten girls. She began as a teacher,
then was a project director with
the Ministry of Education, became a
specialist lecturer with the Regional
Language Centre (RELC), and finally
became a full-time writer in 1992. She
has won national and regional book
prizes for her literary contributions. Her
works are studied in local and foreign
schools and universities and have
been published in various languages in
several countries.

Now, my friend needs help to solve a

problem.

“Will you help me figure this out?”

IRONY

Excellent!
“Now, let us all read the story of Mrs.
Catherine Lim about the taxi man in
the slide presentation.”

Group 1, you will read the first to

fourth paragraph from the slide that I
will show you.

Group 2, fifth and sixth paragraphs.

Group 3, paragraph number seven.

Group 4, for the eighth paragraph

Group 5, in the ninth paragraph

And the last group will be the last

paragraph.

“Who is the narrator in the story?”

“The Taxi man”

“What did the taxi man told about

Singapore before?” “The taxi man said that Singapore is not
crowded and busy. It is peaceful, not so
many taxi men, cars and buses.”

“According to the taximan, what is the

difference between young people “Young people before are obedient, they
beforeand the young people of today’s have punishment when they do wrong,
generation?” parents are strict and when they married,
they are in the right age already.”

“Based on the story what did the

young people do that their parents “They go to public lavatory or hotel and
didn’t know?” change into these clothes, and they put
make-up on their faces.”
(Answers may vary)

“Who is the favorite daughter of the

taxi man?” “The favorite daughter of the taximan
Lay Choo”

“What did he expect from her

daughter?” “He was expecting that her daughter is
doing well in school and she is not like
the young people now a day.”

“What did he do when he found out

that his favorite daughter was all
dressed up and with makeup” “He slapped her daughter, drag her and
locked her in her room for three days.”
(Answers may vary)

“To sum up the story, it is about a taxi

driver who is against the behavior of
young children today. They are not
well-disciplined and he compares them
to the young children before. The
parents before was very strict when it
comes to their children. They give
punishment in every bad thing that
they do. Unlike today, they are easy-go
lucky not minding about their parents
who are working hard for them. They
lied and went wild outside whenever
their parents are not around.”

“Do you agree to the taxi man’s

impressions about the young people of
today? Why or Why not?”
“Yes, because the children now a day
are strong-headed or they didn’t obey
their parents,”

“Do you have any idea what Irony is?”

“Yes, Ma’am”
(Answer may vary)
Irony is about expectations. There are
3 kinds of irony. First is the Verbal,
second is the situational and the last is
dramatic.

I will play videos and guess if it is in

dramatic, verbal or situational irony.

“Are my instructions clear?”

“Yes Ma’am”
(The teacher will play the videos and
let the students guess it.)

“Verbal”

“In the first video, what did the goat

expect after the squirrel pop the “The goat expected that the dogs will be
balloon?” awake because of the noise but the dogs
awake because of its own noise.”
Very Good! That is what you call
Situational irony. Situational
ironyoccurs when what actually
happens is the opposite of what is
expected. It is when an outcome is
completely unexpected.

Examples:
 Ralph wakes up late and thinks
he is going to be late to school.
After rushing around to get
dressed, he realizes it is
Saturday.
 The fire station burns down
while the firemen are out on a
call.
 Sara is trying to avoid a water
gun fight that her brothers are
having and she falls into a
puddle.

“In the next video, what did Dora and

Boots encounter on the road?”
“Cactus”
“Do you think Dora and Boots know
about the cactus?”
“No”
“Do you know who is inside the
cactus?”
“Yes”

Meaning the characters didn’t know

about the cactus but the audience or
viewers knew already about the
cactus, which is called Dramatic.
Everyone read the definition.
“Dramatic Irony occurs when the reader
understands more about the events of a
story than a character.”

“It occurs when the reader

understands more about the events of
a story than a character. It is,
therefore, when you know something
that a character does not.”

Examples:

 Girl in a horror film hides in a

closet where the killer just went
(the audience knows the killer is
there, but she does not).
 In Romeo and Juliet, the
audience knows that Juliet is
only asleep-not dead-but
Romeo does not, and he kills
himself.
 In Snow White and the Seven
Dwarves, we know that the old
woman bringing the apple is the
wicked queen who wants to kill
Snow White, but she does not.
She purchases the apple, takes
a bite, and falls.

“And in the last video, what did the

man said who arrived in the story?”
“Nice day we're having”
“Do you think he is telling the truth?
Why?”
“No, because he’s holding an umbrella
That’s correct he is telling the opposite and he is wet”
of what is really happening. And it is
the last part of irony which is verbal.
Everyone, please read the definition.
“Verbal irony occurs when a character
says one thing but means the opposite.”
It is also called sarcasm or being
sarcastic.

“Do you know what’s the meaning of

sarcasm?”
“Yes Ma’am”
(Answers may vary)
Sarcasm means saying the opposite
of what is meant for humorous or cruel
intent.

Examples:

 Someone shops for a mattress lay

down on a really firm one and
says, "This bed is as soft as a
brick."
 When the air conditioning goes out
on a hot summer afternoon, a
tenant says to their landlord, "It's
as cool as the fires of Hell."
 After a terrible blind date, a woman
calls her friend and says, "He was
as friendly as a rattlesnake."

Is it clear to everyone? Do you have

any questions or clarifications about
the irony and its type? “Yes Ma’am”

Again it is ironic because it is

unexpected.
• If unexpected by a character, it is
dramatic.
• If unexpected by everyone, it is
situational.
• If it is sarcasm, it is verbal.

Is that clear?
“Yes Ma’am”
B. Abstraction

“How will you identify the situation, if

it is verbal, dramatic or situational?”
If unexpected by a character, it is
dramatic. If unexpected by everyone, it is
situational. If it is sarcasm, it is verbal.
“Based on your own behavior, where
do you think you belong, the young
people before or the young people “We belong to the young people before.”
today?” (Answers may vary)

“Do you have any experience that you

lied to your parents?” Why?
“Yes, Ma’am”
(Answers may vary)
“Like the taxi man, what are your
expectations in life?”
“I am expecting to graduate or finish
junior high school”
(Answers may vary)
“What do you feel when you expect
something but it didn’t happen?”
“I feel disappointed in a sense…”
(Answers may vary)
“Alright, in this world that we live in
where expectations or standards are
set, it is hard for us to accept the fact
that we should not expect something
for it leads to disappointment. Not all
our undertakings are favoring our side,
so we must be open for constructive
criticism because it will help us to grow
as an individual. Is it clear?”

C. Application

Let us have an activity! I will give an

envelope that contains the tasks that
you need to accomplish. You will
present it in front of the class.
Group 1: Give at least five(5) examples
of verbal irony.
Group 2: Make a role play that shows
situational irony.
Group 3: Give at least five(5) examples

dramatic irony.
Group 5: Compare the young people of
today’s generation to the young people
before using the Venn diagram.
Group 6: Give at least five (5)
examples of dramatic irony.

IV. Evaluation
