Lighting

Abstract:

Smart lighting systems have become increasingly used in both home and industrial
applications. The possibility of interconnecting these systems allows the following:
integrated lighting control (offering great flexibility in controlling the overall and individual
device lighting parameters), monitoring of energy consumption, and provision of support
for achieving predictive maintenance of the entire system. This paper presents an IoT
system using a low-cost microcontroller-based system that has WiFi communication
capability and which can control over the Internet the lighting devices using the DALI
protocol.

Intelligent Energy Efficient Street Light Controlling

System based on IoT for Smart City

Abstract
In day to day life electricity has been an area of concern worldwide. There are not much
sources for non-renewable sources and most of the power generation stations, they are
based on fuels that are conventional. In order make ourselves independent of these
sources of energy, it is recommended that we proceed on to the new and renewable
power sources like solar and wind. We can also make effective utilization of the
conventional and non-renewable sources for a proper usage of electricity, so that we do
not run into shortage of power. Street lights are one of the consumable sources of
electricity that are essential parts of the day to day life. The conventional street lighting
systems require manual operation and also consume a large amount of power as they
are in powered on condition from evening to early morning. The conventional manual
operated street lighting systems consume a large amount of power, need manual
operators and heavy cost on installation which has been a great disadvantage and an
area of major concern. The costs of energy can be reduced immediately to 35% through
intelligent on/off mechanism and targeted progressive dimming and organized way of
power consumption. We can reduce the overall consumption costs up to 42% by proper
maintenance. The proposed approach uses an energy effective approach that controls
the street lights by automatically switching them when there are people or vehicles around
the post when it is dark. The smart street lighting system is so flexible and it consists of
various sensors and a controller which make it as an intelligent street lighting system.
Thus it overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional Street Lighting System.

An IOT Based Smart Cubicle System for Effective

Power Usage and Employee Monitoring in Offices

Abstract
In today's world of rapid changes in technology and new inventions and updates being
implemented every second, human beings while running for the bigger concerns are
neglecting the trivial aspects which may cause them a fortune if such profligate use is
continued. One such example is the reckless usage of electricity. In this paper, we present
a Smart Lighting System which aims at curbing this problem using IOT. Internet of Things
has captured this era of computing technology. It is made up of advanced technology
components that have the ability to transmit, analyze and interpret information and
function in accordance to the human behavioral inputs. Here we propose an energy
efficient system for lighting up a room based on the occupancy of the room and the
intensity of the light using PIR sensors and other components such as LDR and
Raspberry Pi. The lighting system of the room is based on a grid format and when a
person is in the vicinity or the range of a particular bulb, only then will it be lit. The
introduction of Raspberry Pi in the model will also allow monitoring of employee work-
patterns. Our proposed system will eliminate the human errors such as leaving the
buttons on due to negligence. The advent of such a system will conserve energy, enhance
customer service and aid economic development.
An IoT-based automation system for older homes:
a use case for lighting system

Abstract

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) platforms in modern buildings has started to
offer diverse services for residents comfort and wellbeing. However, in addition to modern
buildings, where the use of IoT starts from the planning and design stages, older homes
(i.e. homes constructed more than a decade ago) also have high potential to employ such
platforms and benefit from them. This paper presents the potential gained benefits of such
IoT implementations for older homes by proposing an IoT-enabled control mechanism.
Moreover, we illustrate the impact of using IoT on reducing the energy consumption of a
home while ensuring comfort for the residents. To this end, we develop a test-bed for an
IoT platform where we use light sensors to monitor the indoor ambient light. We then
define a control mechanism for the smart lighting system that is functional on the IoT
gateway and designed to control and adjust the dimmable light sources. Through
simulations, we compare the conventional system power consumption (CSPC) of homes
with the smart system power consumption (SSPC) defined by our control mechanism.
The SSPC results demonstrate the potential advantages of using IoT-enabled control
systems in older homes. In our case, the savings are in the form of reducing power
consumed for lighting while ensuring visual comfort for the residents.
Energy efficient IoT-based smart home

Abstract

Smart Home technology is the future of residential related technology which is designed
to deliver and distribute number of services inside and outside the house via networked
devices in which all the different applications & the intelligence behind them are integrated
and interconnected. These smart devices have the potential to share information with
each other given the permanent availability to access the broadband internet connection.
Hence, Smart Home Technology has become part of IoT (Internet of Things). In this work,
a home model is analyzed to demonstrate an energy efficient IoT based smart home.
Several Multi physics simulations were carried out focusing on the kitchen of the home
model. A motion sensor with a surveillance camera was used as part of the home security
system. Coupled with the home light and HVAC control systems, the smart system can
remotely control the lighting and heating or cooling when an occupant enters or leaves
the kitchen.

IOT Based Smart Electric Pole

Abstract:

The conventional street lighting maintenance and control system still remains ancient in
this era of revolution and technological advancement. The evolution of the Internet of
Things (IoT) has been a benevolent cornerstone for such revolutionary giants of the web
world. Thus we use this highly coveted technology to cater to the maintenance and control
processes of street lighting system. The proposed system enables maintenance and
control of the street lights and makes it easier to monitor and control its operation. The
system will detect faults in the street lights to intimate the control room to take immediate
action. This application will have the following features viz. automatic circuit fault
detection, pole inclination detection and light sensing. It aims to design a smart electric
pole which is free of any human intervention and provides quick maintenance
functionality. In the current scenario, the street lights are switched ON at a pre-decided
time every evening and is switched OFF the next morning. It also requires regular check-
ups for electric pole defect. This project gives a solution for fast repairing and maximizes
the ability to control the street lamps remotely and efficiently.

An Approach towards Building an IoT Based Smart
Classroom

IoT (Internet of Things) is a dynamic innovation with a powerful impact on today's world
which can make human life simple and effortless. The scope of this field is limitless and
has emerged as a winner in various areas ranging from Medicine, Engineering, Computer
Science, Space and Technology, Automobiles and so on. The center of purpose is
utilizing IoT based technology in accomplishing automation for classrooms. In this paper,
we propose an approach to control and manage electrical equipment such as fans and
lights based on human presence. Our focus is towards building a solution which could
help in reducing overutilization of energy resources. A camera is used for recognizing the
presence of people in the classroom and for analyzing their seating position. Here a
classroom is divided into two segments. Whenever a human presence is detected in a
particular segment then the light and fan will be switched ON. The reasonable objective
of this paper is how to build up a smart classroom where we can automate the electrical
equipments with a focus towards energy conservation.
