Pre- Observation Reflection: Designing Lessons to Meet Student Learning Needs

Please answer one question in each category (ie: Learning objectives and goals) below for a
total of 5 questions. Use complete sentences and attend to writing mechanics. Include this
sheet as the cover page for your formal lesson plan.

Learning Objectives and Goals


 How do you plan to communicate the learning objectives to students? Be specific
include teacher talk and exact language you might use.
o I plan on communicating the learning objective to my students through our
Google Slides presentation that will be used for the lesson. I will display the
student’s I CAN statement on the board. I will then ask “Can I have one person
read the I CAN statement to the class, please.” After the student reads the
statement I will say something such as “Great job ______. Okay now I need
everyone to read the I CAN statement.” This will help ensure that all of the
students know what the lesson objective is. The I CAN statement that the
students will be reading is: I can estimate multi-digit products by rounding
factors to a basic fact and using place value patterns.

 What sources of student data did you use to determine student performance levels?
What did you learn from this data?
o Some sources of student data that I used to determine student performance
levels was looking at the student’s fourth grade math FSA scores. This allowed
me to see what students are considered to be “on level” or “above” and then
what students were struggling with fourth grade math. This information can help
differentiate the lessons to make sure that I am meeting each student’s specific
needs. The students also just completed the end of module 1 assessment. This
will also help me see what students grasped the content in module 1 and which
student’s still need a small group review.
 How did you become familiar with students background knowledge, skill levels,
experiences, and cultural resources? What did you learn that you used in this lesson?

Assessment (choose one)


 How do you plan to provide feedback to students? Why
o I plan to provide a lot of verbal feedback to students during the lesson. I have
noticed that with my morning group they generally are very receptive to verbal
feedback and take note of it and are then able to move forward. I also like how
this is quick feedback and the students do not need to wait to get papers back.
However, I will also be grading and writing detailed comments on the student’s
exit tickets explaining to the student’s what was good and what could be
improved upon. I believe that it is important to not only give corrections, but
also give students praise for what they have accomplished.
 How do you expect students to respond to questions? Whole class? Individual? Why?
 How will you ensure you call on all students?

 How will you model or explain clear expectations for student learning? Be specific,
include teacher talk and exact language you might use.
 How will students be grouped for learning? How is the grouping related to social and
academic goals?
 How will you know when it is time to move from one activity to the next?
o I will have my lesson plan with me with a general timeline of when we should be
moving on to the next activity. However, as we know sometimes our planning
and timing do not go as planned. I will know that I can move on to another
activity once all of the students are at least familiar with the concept and have a
general idea on how to solve the problems. I do not want to move on until I see
most of the students understanding the content.

Observation Focus
 What specific areas would you like me to focus on for my observation (ie: questioning,
teacher movement). It may help to think about a FEAP or instructional goal
o One specific area that I would like you to focus on for this observation is my
content delivery to the students. I understand how to do the math, but
sometimes I have to pause and think about how I would explain this to the
students without confusing them. I believe that this also comes with practice,
but I am certain that there will be some strategies or tips I can learn to help me.
