Introduction

Reynold’s lane is a very small community, it is located in the District of Winters’ pen, St Catherine, it
necessitate 2 shops, a wholesale, a bar etc. this location is 8 min (3.5)km from Spanish town I been
an Inhabitant in this area for the past 7 years and during this phase I scan and observe a lot of teens
age 13-19 years old are smoking in the community. they are smoking Cigarettes, cannabis and
tobacco. Whenever I head out to buy groceries at the nearby wholesale I often see teens around the
age of 16-17 buying 3 cigarettes, I wasn’t sure if it belonged to him so I ignored the situation. On my
way back I glanced the same young man smoking along with two other male. So I have strongminded
myself to investigate the impact of smoking on the teenagers in my community.

Statement of the Problem

Topic: Smoking

What Impact does smoking have on the teenagers in my community ?

The reason why we selected this topic was because this problem is one of the most prominent
problems in the nowadays society. This is a sensitive investigation and must be carried out to convey
and discover the causes effects and possible a solution to the widespread. Smoking in my
community causes a variety of Problems, we’ve found this topic to be very interesting mainly
because teens in our communities nowadays are taking up the bad habit of smoking which is wrong
and should not be practiced.

Reason Method of investigation

In order for us to obtain data a printed questionnaire was used for the research. A questionnaire has
a number of conveniences
• These answers are relatively easy to analyze
• Respondent Anonymity
• Offers quick way to get results
This offers Quick Results this is not time consuming requires little time to be filled out
The method of data collection was the survey and the instrument which is the questionnaire. We
used a method of survey to collection and analyze our data, were not to include personal
information such as their names or address, this concealment puts respondents at ease and
encourages them to answer truthfully.

Procedure for Data Collection

The survey was carried out in the community of Reynolds lane in Wynter’s pen, St Catherine,
Jamaica
This Specimen Consisted of twenty Persons (20); 10 males and 10 females
Furthermore we’ve collected data by going to their shed where some of them hide and smoke, we
even visited some of their homes in the community, we’ve asked them if we could do a quick survey
and they agreed, shortly after we handed them the questionnaires instructioning them on how to
answer the questions and also reassuring to them that there identifies are anonymous. After the
we’ve completed the survey Daniel and I analyze between each and every question to see how they
differ.

Presentation of Data
Parents who are aware of their teens smoking

Figure one shows a pie chart consisting of the responses to the question, are your parents aware
that you smoke?
Thirteen (13) respondents answered yes, three (3) respondents answered Not Sure. The remaining
seven (7) said no their parents weren’t aware that they smoke.

Figure two (2) shows a bar graph of all respondents who responded to the question, have you ever

that they have not really tried stop smoking, another (3) stated that they have tried stop smoking

Figure three (3) shows a table depicting how the age group of the teens who are involved in
smoking. Fifteen (15) respondents were between the ages of 12-16, and the other (5) are between
the ages of 16-19. This to show that mostly young teens are starting to smoke very early.
Analysis and Interpretation of Data

The Information obtained shows 100% of the respondents that say that they smoke are impacted by
smoking hence they still go to school. For the parents who are unaware that their child/children is
involved in the act of smoking this can cause major stress upon the parents, teen smokers oftentimes
displays a very intolerable behaviour, most of the teens smokers that’s we did the Survey with told
us that there parents don’t know that’s they smoke and they often skip school just to smoke with
friend. Parents should consider talking to their child before approaching them with force with the
intention of being scolded, for example explaining to them the effects of smoking because most of
them are so very young they don’t really understand the effects that smoking has on their body and
minds, they often follow peers and smoke, since they see it as to look cool or to be accepted by a
certain group of individuals not being aware of the consequences of smoking. As Jamaicans the
government have decriminalized ganja, although most of these teens started of smoking cigarettes.
In Figure one shows a pie chart consisting of the responses to the question, are your parents aware
that you smoke? Thirteen (13) respondents answered yes, three (3) respondents answered Not Sure.
The remaining seven (7) said no their parents weren’t aware that they smoke. This is to show that
most of the parents are aware of their child smoking so they are to be blamed, since (65%) are
aware that their child is smoking. Some of them claimed that their parents don’t got a problem
because it is Decriminalized by the government, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe I stated. The (15%)
respondents answered not sure, they stated that because they said they hid and smoke and some of
their parents are also aware but cannot jump to a final conclusion that they are really smoking. The
remaining (35%) said for sure that their parents have no clue that they are smoking, since these once
hid and smoke after school although they still attend school, reason being their parents arrive home
late at midnights so they have the time to do it.

• Smoking is very evident and prevalent in my community
• Most parent and citizens of the community don’t care about the young future individuals
