COOPERATIVE LEARNING 1
(GROUP A)

JKMB Manufacturing Sdn Bhd produces 3 kinds of T-shirt: T-shirt A, T-shirt B and T-shirt C.
All three T-shirts require operations of the following departments: cutting and dyeing, sewing
and inspection and packaging. The production times and maximum production availabilities
are shown in Table 1.

Table 1
Production time (minutes)
Model Cutting and Dyeing Sewing Inspection and Packaging
T-shirt A 12 15 3
T-shirt B 10 15 4
T-shirt C 8 12 2

Time available 300 hours 200 hours 100 hours

Current capacity stipulates that at most 1000 T-shirt A can be manufactured.

If JKMB Manufacturing Sdn Bhd realizes a profit contribution of RM3 for each T-shirt A,
RM5 for each T-shirt B, and RM4 for each T-shirt C, then

(a) Set up the mathematical model by defining the decision variable involved. Specify the
objective, constraints and non-negativity constraints.
(5 marks)

(b) Convert the mathematical model equation into equality constraints. Set up the simplex
table and solve the problem manually using Gaussian elimination technique.
(10 marks)

(c) Using simplex method, how many T-shirts of each type should be produced?
(3 marks)

(d) Which resources are fully utilised and under utilised? Interpret your answers.

(GROUP B)

Figure 1 shows traffic flow rates of vehicles into and out of a network of traffic at one of the
junction in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Figure 1

The numbers and letters represent the number of cars per hour using each section of road, while
the arrows indicate the direction of that traffic flows on each section of road. A road section
can handle up to 500 cars per hour without congestion.

(a) Set up a system of linear equations describing the traffic flow.

(b) Solve the system for the unknowns flow rates.
(c) Find the flow rates and directions of flow if x4 = 120 and x5 = 20.

Table 2 describes an open economy with three sectors in which the table entries are the dollar
inputs required to produce one dollar of output.

Table 2
Input Required per Dollar Output
Electricity Coal Manufacturing
Electricity $0.10 $0.25 $0.20
Provider

Coal $0.30 $0.40 $0.50

Manufacturing $0.10 $0.15 $0.10

(a) Find the consumption matrix for the open economy.

(b) Suppose, the outside demand during a 1-week period have $50,000 of coal, $75,000 of
electricity, and $1,250,000 of manufacturing. Use row reduction to determine whether
the economy can meet the demand.
