CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
This work describes the design of an integrated flywheel energy generation system with a
motor/generator and a high frequency drive for high power applications. A system level design
methodology for integrated flywheels and detailed design and analysis of the motor/generator
of the flywheel system are presented. In this introduction, background information on
applications for flywheels, competing energy storage technologies, different flywheel
technologies, and an overview of this thesis are presented.

Industries are basically meant for Production of useful goods and services at low production
cost, machinery cost and low inventory cost. Today in this world every task has been made
quicker and fast due to technology advancement but this advancement also demands huge
investments and expenditure, every industry desires to make high productivity rate maintaining
the quality and standard of the product at low average cost.In an industry a considerable portion
of investment is being made for machinery installation. So in this paper we have a proposed a
machine which can perform operations like drilling, sawing, shaping, some lathe operations at
different working centres simultaneously which implies that industrialist have not to pay for
machine performing above tasks individually for operating operation simultaneously.

Economics of manufacturing: According to some economists, manufacturing is a

wealthproducing sector of an economy, whereas a service sector tends to be wealth-consuming.
Emerging technologies have provided some new growth in advanced manufacturing
employment opportunities in the Manufacturing Belt in the United States. Manufacturing
provides important material support for national infrastructure and for national defence.

Here we are fabricating the multi operation machine which contains four operations in a single
machine. The operations are namely drilling, grinding, slotting and cutting. It is a new concept
specially meant to reduce the work time and save the cost. Instead of using separate machine
for each process, we are combining all the machines together into a single machine reducing
the time cost and time. The power transmission for each and every operation is done through
the various methods such as power transmission through belt & pulley, power transmission
through shaft & gears. The power transmission are done in such a way that there occurs
efficient power transmission with no loss in between.

The detailed description of the components used, links present, mechanism followed and
process involved will be discussed below.

Sawing
Sawing is a process wherein a narrow slit is cut into the work piece by a tool consisting of a
series of narrowly spaced teeth called asaw blade. Sawing is used to separate work parts into
two or more piece, or to cut an unwanted section of part.

Grinding

Grinding is used to finish the work piece that requires surface quality as well as high accuracy
of shape and dimension. As the accuracy in dimensions in grinding is of the order of
0.00025mm,in most application it tends to be a finishing operation and removes comparatively
less metal, about 0.25 to 0.50 mm. However there are some roughing applications in which
grinding removes high volumes of metal quite rapidly.

Planing (Shaping)

Planing is a manufacturing process of material removal in which the workpiece reciprocates

against a stationary cutting tool producing a plane or sculpted surface. Planing is analogous to
shaping. The main difference between these two processes is that in shaping the tool
reciprocates across the stationary workpiece. Planing motion is the opposite of shaping. Both
planing and shaping are rapidly being replaced by milling.
The mechanism used for this process is known as a planer. The size of the planer is determined
by the largest workpiece that can be machined on it. The cutting tools are usually carbide tipped
or made of high speed steel and resemble those used in facing and turning.

==Process characteristics==shaping, the tool is brought into position with the workpiece. The
tool then repeatedly moves in a straight line while the workpiece is incrementally fed into the
line of motion of the tool, this produces a flat, smooth, and sculpted surface. For shaped pieces
the tool reciprocates across the stationary workpiece. The tools are usually tilted or lifted after
each stroke

Idea of using Pedal Power

• World is a storehouse of energy. We all know that energy can neither be created nor
destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another.

• But we are wasting resources that can produce energy as if they are limitless.

• If we can renew and reuse the energy we waste, it would help in some way to the
problem of scarcity of energy, which is the major threat of present world.

• Humans are able to generate approximately 150W of power while riding bicycle.
