Chapter 1

Introduction

As one of the greatest Greek philosopher, Thales once quoted his Latin
phrase, “Mens sana in corpore sano” which translates to “A sound mind in a sound
body”. Having mentioned that, this Greek origin insists that the mind and the body
should be both indeed healthy. It is an essential to maintain a great physical and
psychological health of a well-being. Yet, we don’t manage to value this object.
Individuals have their own purposes and goals in life to reach. Everyone should
consider the physical stress; business man for organizing their companies,
employees for their jobs, teachers for teaching their students, and students for
studying until they graduate. Numerous people get up much earlier to get a jump
start on our day. Each one is exposed to stress at some point of their lives which
surely affected their sense of well-being and quality of life.

In the cognitive-transactional model of stress, stress is the dynamic relationship

between an individual and the environment in which a stimulus disturbs an
individual’s homeostasis, causing him or her to respond to the situation with all
available resources. Stress is considered as one of the most undermined syndrome
in our society that is dilapidated since the element of mental health associated with
it. Multiple basis is categorized which can lead to a lot of terms and different types of
stress. There are also multitudinous emotional and physical symptoms that have
been caused by stress including depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and many
more.

In this study, academic stress will be the central focus which aims to
determine and measure the extent of stress which will be conducted and based on
the students and teachers in the high school department of Sacred Heart Academy

of Pasig campus while the study will be carried out through the age range
(Millennials and Generation Z). Through this problem, there was a need for
identification of stress and the key stressors that are affecting the academic
performance. The researchers will further elevate the previous research by also
comparing the two variables, studying the effects of stress to teachers and students
and also may find a solution to decrease the stress level of its respondents. For its
very objective, it was ignominious that there are two stressors that are external in
nature and have a solid impact on person’s abilities. These stressors cover health
factors and social factors. We are taking the intellectual abilities and academic
performance to be the dependent variable whereas stress is regarded to be an
independent variable.

Background of the Study

Stress has numerous effects, both positive and negative. It can lead to
mental, emotional and physical issues. People respond and react to it differently, so
its effect may depend on how they handle it and how they condition themselves to
make themselves conscious of the ongoing stress they are experiencing. Stress may
build or break a person, any mind-set and its state as well, but it could possibly help
some people to force themselves to be better since it pushes them to their limits.
Whether it may be good or bad, it’s how people embrace and acknowledge feelings
of stress.

In scientific terms, our body has an autonomic nervous system that will alert
our body which could handle our stressful situations for us. They automatically
enable the “fight or flight” response that will help us overcome or temporarily fight
back the stressful feeling, in any given situation. More often than not, when stress
becomes too overwhelming, the negative effects can be easily seen in the person’s
physical and emotional condition. Some people may brush off or ignore stress when
it attacks their mental state, before letting it wander on their other divisions of
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

headspace since as stated earlier, every each and every one of us would react to
stress in our own ways.

The stress level of a person can be categorized on how bad they are
suffering. There are physical, mental and emotional signs. The physical signs include
headaches, which eventually leads to migraines, because the muscles have been
consistently tense enough to cause repercussions like this. It can also affect your
food consumption and your bowel movement such as constipation and diarrhea, to
name a few. Your digestive system might not be able to absorb the nutrients
properly. Reproductive issues and changes to your heart rate and blood pressure is
possible when your stress level is too high. The emotional signs are evident since it
can alter the way you think about yourself and others, and it could make your
thoughts unclear and uncertain which can make you do irrational things. Some
people resort into drinking alcoholic beverages and other vices that brings them a
sense of temporary relief, but they do not realize how it just worsens the entire
situation. It can make you feel isolated at times, and the need to interact is no longer
necessary to you and everything you do feels like a chore. Lack of sleep, irritability,
overthinking and the inability to think straight are expected to happen as well.

Knowing the factors that triggers or causes stress in people can be seen in a
general point of view, but determining the extent stress level of students and teacher
may be more complex since everything must be specified.

Statement of the Problem

1. What are the factors that affect the academic stress of:
1.1 Teachers?

` 1.2 Students?

2. What are the possible effects of academic stress to:

2.1 Teachers?
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

2.2 Students?

3. What are the extent of stress level based on intellectual abilities and
academic performances of:
3.1 Teachers?
3.2 Students?
4. What is the interval between a student’s stress level and a teacher’s stress
level?

Hypotheses

1. Throughout the study the factors affecting the academic stress of students
and teachers would be determined.
2. The students and teachers encounter different academic stress which has an
effect to their intellectual ability and academic performance.
3. The intellectual abilities and academic performance of teachers and students,
respectively, is inversely proportional to the extent of their stress level.
4. The difference between the extent of stress level would determine which one
between the teachers and students are affected by academic stress more.

Theoretical Framework

From the theory of Lazarus and Folkman in 1986-87 called Transactional

Theory, stress is the direct product of a transaction between an individual and their
environment which may tax their resources and thus threaten their wellbeing.

It was heavily pointed that someone’s stress could often be the result from
their interaction with their environment or the things that are around them. This
suggests that stress may differ based on what environment a person is in. This effect
is seen in our world where a lot of situations can be drawn, situations such as a
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

student having more stress at school than at home or a teacher having more stress
at school rather than at home.

It could be stated that the environment in which a person would receive the
most stress in would differ from person to person. It could be based on where and
every single of us are comfortable with, with our personal likes and dislikes. All-in-all
there are a lot of factors that could make an environment stressful or stressful for a
certain person or a group of people.

Another theory would be Ganster and Rosen back in 2013, where he had
stated that any aspect of the work environment can be considered a stressor but an
individual's capabilities can be affected by several factors such as personalities,
situational demands, coping skills, previous experiences, time lapse and any current
stress state being experienced by the individual.

This theory further suggests that the factors that would lead to an individual's
stress are found within the environment they are currently in and shows just how
much things may be considered as stressors for people. Everyone is different from
one another so everybody does not have the exact same stressors, but there are
several stressors that are common amongst students and teachers alike. One of the
most common ones are time, whether it be the lack of time or having no time at all,
as it greatly affects study.

Scope and Delimitations

Determining the stress level of teacher and students may be difficult, as the
researchers would have to accurately measure and list down every factor that could
have or had caused the stress that was brought upon their chosen respondents. In
order to know the factors, the researchers must come up with a set of levels that can
categorize the respondents’ stress capacities. They should be able to recognize the
differentiation and similarities between the different kinds of stress and how they are
connected.

The researchers should also acknowledge the levels of stress between the
teachers and students and how it affects them in a daily basis. The responses are a
big help to accumulate the needed information for this research to be successful.
But, there is always a possibility that the respondents’ answers will be vague and will
not be sufficient enough to come up or theorize as to why and how they are stressing
about a certain issue, situation or person. Stress cannot be measured literally, nor
scientifically because stress is such a broad topic to discuss about since its origin
may differ, depending on the person who is stressed out. Which is why the
researchers should create a categorization of stress levels based on the levels of
stress by Elizabeth Scott, MS (2018). The researchers could only assume the stress
level, not accurately distinguish it. Which is why a categorization of stress levels are
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig

necessary, so the answers will come out evenly in a sense that the data won’t be
hard to interpret and analyse.

Significance of the Study

The study will contribute to the following audiences:

● Teachers
This study will help the high school teachers know how to balance their
jobs and personal lives.
● Students
This study would be able to further expand our knowledge about just
how much stress can high school students handle and find ways on how we
could lessen the stress they handle on an everyday scale.
● Parents
This study will also benefit parents who are concerned about their
child’s physical and mental state, because they get to acknowledge the things
that make them stressed out. They would also be able to help their children by
being educated on how to handle and prevent stress.
● Future Researchers
This study can help the future researchers as a reference to gather
information for further research.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This following chapter contains articles from books, literatures, journals, sites,
newspapers, magazines and other materials related to this study that is further
divided into multiple categories:

Foreign Literature:

The American Mental Affiliation (2008) announced that 33% of Americans

appraised their feelings of anxiety as unreasonable and 8 out of 10 trusted that the
primary driver of ailment was because of stress. It is said that Americans report
having physical and passionate side effects, for example, weariness, sentiments of
crabbiness or outrage, sleep deprivation, despondency, absence of intrigue or
inspiration, cerebral pain, strong pressure, and shortcoming because of stress
(Bethune, 2008). Notwithstanding these side effects, overabundance stress caused

chest torments, fast heartbeat, over eating, irritated stomach, dry mouth, expanded
recurrence of colds, absence of fixation or centre, memory issues or neglect,
butterflies, irritability and tension. Unfortunate practices like smoking, betting,
extreme drinking and indulging or skipping suppers were additionally credited to
intemperate pressure.

International Journal of Advanced Research Vol. 4, Issue 1 (Jan. - Mar. 2017)

in Education & Technology or IJARET (2017) stated that Students face various
academic problems in today's highly competitive world, including examination stress,
disinterest in attending classes and failure to understand the subject. Examination
stress is the feeling of anxiety or apprehension about one's examination
performance. It can lead to students not being able to perform their exams to the
best of their abilities.

State of America’s Schools (2016) reported that almost 70 percent of teachers

did not feel involved in their work. Almost half of the report every day experiences job
- related stress. On the basis of responses from 70,000 U.S. employees, including
7,200 K-12 teachers, 31 percent of teachers were classified as "engaged" at work.
Compared to respondents in general, this was a similar percentage. The proportion
of employees described as "not involved".

School Leaders Now (2018) pointed that most administrators seem to

understand that many students are struggling with fear. Plans and procedures are in
place to help these students feel comfortable and successful. Administrators must
also bear in mind, however, that adults also address anxiety, including the teachers
with whom they work. Teachers have much to worry about: students, parents,
paperwork, pay checks, grades and other miscellaneous matters.

Best College (2019) mentioned that during the college experience, students
are exposed to a barrage of stressors, from growing pains associated with adjusting
to college to everyday factors such as social pressures and work responsibilities. A
2016 survey conducted by the American College Health Association found that 34.4
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig

percent of college students reported that their academic performance was negatively
affected by stress.

These literature pieces or excerpts from several articles or previous thesis’ are
related to this study because they show the causes of stress among teachers. They
determine the factors that affect their general mindset that affects their performance
in their own workspaces.

Foreign Studies:

Christian Nordqvist (2017) stated that stress is the body’s way of reacting to
any kind of danger that can affect or harm you in a negative and dangerous way. It is
caused by the things that affects you and your surroundings, because these are your
normal day-to-day scenarios such as work-related problems, financial issues and
your general relationships with everyone and everything around you. Although it can
pose a negative threat to your body and mind, it can be used as a motivator to do
better in the future. But when the stress won’t stop and gets a little too overboard, it
has the ability to ruin your physical and mental health.

Mental Health UK (2018) stated that “Stress is a response to a threat in a

situation, whereas anxiety is a reaction to the stress.”. There are signs wherein you
can identify if a person if stressed out or not. Sometimes, our emotions get the best
of us and we sulk over anything. In this case, when you are stressed, you tend to get
overly emotional and mood swings would occur here and there. This is because
stress can get to your head, especially your feelings and this could also lead to
insufficient sleep at night. It can also affect your physicality. The way you eat, your
attitude about exercise, staying fit and then most importantly, your physical health.
Everyone feels stressed out every once in a while, if you’re one of the lucky ones.
Stress is normal, but conditioning yourself to be fine with it, is not. Learn how to face
it and learn how to deal with. Then when you finally know what had been stressing
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

you out all along, study the situation and slowly prepare yourself to diminish what
had been pestering you.

Elizabeth Scott, MS (2018) stated that there are several ways on how to relief
your stress. Breathing exercises may not be that helpful, especially to
chronically-occurring stresses. Finding the perfect stress reliever is a must, because
you know yourself better than anyone, and so you have to find a suitable coping
strategy for you to practice whenever you feel stressed. Once you’ve found a way to
relieve your stress, it will slowly become easier for you. Although it won’t be a
fast-paced process, it will ensure yourself to stay calm. There are 4 types of stress;
Acute, Chronic, Emotional and Battling Burnout.

Acute stress leaves an impact on you when stress hits you all of a sudden. It’s
nothing too serious and you don’t have to worry since this can be recovered by doing
simple breathing exercises, cognitive reframing, progressive muscle relaxation and
mini-meditation. Chronic stress is the kind of stress that happens every day, and it
could often lead to physical and mental issues. This requires stress-relievers and
long-term stress relief habits that could conveniently handle your stressful attacks.
You need to exercise, and to find and create equilibrium inside of you. Listening to
music helps to soothe the nerves. Emotional stress is the effect of your vulnerability
through stressful situations. Psychologically speaking, you need to be able to hold
yourself because your reaction towards stress may affect your way of thinking and
how you feel as well. Might as well talk to a therapist to express all of your raging
emotions and to find inner peace no matter what. Battling Burnout basically means
that you’ve lost the will to do anything at the moment because of how stress invaded
your head. You need to take some time off and to take care of yourself.

Web MD (2018) stated that stress can be treated in so many ways. Being
positive is number one in the list as it can really help you with your minds-set when it
comes to handling everything. Make time for yourself, always. You have to
remember to take care of yourself, before anything else. Set goals of what you want
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

to happen. Discipline yourself to not resort into drinking or anything else that could
possibly lead you into doing horrible things. Reconnect with yourself by doing the
things you love and try to find a hobby if you don’t have one, so you could be
preoccupied on your spare time.

Michael Castleman (2018) stated that whenever a stressful situation occurs,

just try to breathe in and out. Visualize and conceptualize what a calm and soothing
day would be like. Try to indulge yourself like to a massage, or anything that could
calm you down or what would make you the happiest. Smile, because even if you’re
faking it, it will eventually turn into a real one.

Local Literature

Arcelie Santos (2018) stated that, Students are the most essential and
important element in any aducational institution. She added that they are the core of
the learning process and that their performance plays a big role in determining
academic achievements that are associated with what a lot of people value.

She says that stress is inevitable in any condition and situation. Every person
who is wealthy, attractive, powerful, or happy experience stress. However stress will
always differ depending on the given situation and how one percieves stress. She
added that the reaction a person would give to stressors may differ with one another
hence showing that everyone differs in their ways on how to cope with stress.

According to Bill Velasco (2013), stress may lead you to cancer and heart
disease rather than smoking or high-cholesterol food. Stress has many different
effects to our health and not one of these are positive.

The big probelm with oiur society is taking more and more work, or so called
multitasking. Yes there are people who are good at multitasking but did you know
that scientific evidence shows that it is counterproductive and could inevitably render
us incapable of doing complex work.
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Thelma Rabago-Mingoa (2017) stated that too much stress among teachers
might lead to poor physical, mental and emotional state of teachers and possibly
affect their performance. Which is why it is neccessary to quantify stress and identify
potential areas of concern, so there could be neccessary environment or personal
changes to improve stressful situations.

The stress of a teacher may be a hindrance to their teaching and thus may
affect what the students learn from their teaching.

Local Studies:

In 2012, Cadiz and Sonon from Easter Visayas State University, Tacloban
City published a study entitled Levels of Confidence and Stress Among Faculty
 his study states
Members of Eastern Visayas State University-Carigara Campus. T
the work sources of stress and the effects of prolonged exposure that may lead to
more serious health problems. Stress produces numerous symptoms which vary
according to persons, situations, and severity. These can include physical health
decline as well as depression. Finding ways on how to manage stress is one of the
very demanding challenges that teachers need to counter every day. The
aforementioned study aims to provide inputs for the teachers on how they perceived
themselves as educators.

The overall methodology of the study conducted a survey questionnaire which

was the main instrument used to gather the pertinent data. The survey consists of
twenty (20) items designed to measure teachers’ personality. In the Eastern Visayas
State University, the respondents have a high level of stress tolerance as they are
not easily affected by the difficulties they encounter at work. The best predictor of
their level of confidence and the stress they received are based of their mastery of
their field of specialization. Since stress is caused by a multitude of demands
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig

(stressors) such as inadequate fit between what we need and what we are capable
of, and what our environment offers and what it demands of us, this is stated in the
research of Levi (1996). It is hereby recommended that the faculty members should
be made aware of the specific work-related sources of stress for possible change
and assistance along these areas so that stress would be minimized in the work
place through personnel enhancement activities and trainings.

In addition, Yepes and Duarte (2012) from Southern Leyte State University
stated in their study Factors Associated with and Notions Concerning Stress of the
Administration and Academic Personnel t hat academic personnel’s notions
concerning stress sources and symptoms vary due to the nature and gravity of the
tasks they perform. This study was conducted since there is a noticeable effect in the
performance of their university’s manpower. This research study assessed the
factors associated with the notions concerning on stress between the administration
and academic personnel in order to spare the agonizing effect of stress in the
university’s role to provide excellence in the education in the province.

A descriptive-survey method was employed to gather data from 125

respondents using Stress Audit instrument adopted from Miller and Smith (1993).
The research questionnaires were personally administered and retrieved from the
respondents by the researchers. An interpretation of the results and preparation of
the technical report was consolidated and analysed. The faculty and administrative
staff performs their primary functions including the assigned additional
responsibilities which would lead to emotional distress and physical health problems.
Stress is the outcome from how we act at work, at home, and at play in response to
what we transpire in our lives. In order to address the stress they receive due to the
nature and gravity of the tasks they perform, it is recommended that a
comprehensive “Welfare Administration Program” would be implemented to reduce
health risks caused by stress and to promote the welfare and well-being of all
employees.

In the research, Level of Stress of Academic Performance of Selected College

Students of the University of the Immaculate Conception that was published in the
University of the Immaculate Conception by Bernal et. al (2017), it is said that they
are stress out due to their lifestyle and academics which is also interrelated to their
academic performance. At times, the stress students experience can be
self-imposed due to workload at hand (Hamaideh, 2011), noticeably, this is observed
when examinations are near or deadlines are piling up. When these factors pile up
since students have poor skills in time management and organizing work, the stress
from over exhaustion could lead to burnout. This study was conducted to determine
the level of academic performance of students, their level of stress in terms of
burnout, demands, lifestyle and cognitive stress of selected respondents.

The method used in this study was descriptive-correlation to determine the

level of stress and its relationship to academic performance of the students. The
researchers used the General Percentage Average (GPA) based on the preliminary
grade of second semester of the academic year 2017-2018 to measure the
academic performance of the students. Based on the data collected and according to
the Yerkes-Dodson Theory, to reach optimal performance, one must have a
balanced or moderate level of stress. Hence, the stress experienced by students did
not stem from one factor only, it could have accumulated from different aspects of
student’s life like their lifestyle, the demands of social life and academic-related
matters. However, it is important to remember that it is possible to suffer more stress
without proper coping skills and management as the competency in academia keeps
on developing.

In 2014, Laput et. al conducted a research Top Stressors and Commonly

used Defense Mechanism of Students it is written that every person experiences
stress whether within the family, school or any work and in order to cope with it the
use of the defense mechanism to protect oneself from unpleasant emotions that are
unconscious. This study stated that stress can be controlled since it is influenced to
a great extent by the stressors they encounter daily and the way they manage or
Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig
M. Suarez Ave. (formerly Market Ave.), Maybunga Pasig City
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

handle them. This can from any situation or thought that makes one feels frustrated,
angry, nervous, or anxious. Defense mechanism is another way people use in
dealing with stress since they use it a way to cope with the reality of the situation.
Defense mechanisms thus allow one to function normally, however, the greatest
problems arise when defense mechanism are overused in order to avoid dealing with
problems since conflicts may arise if this is used to protect oneself unconsciously.

Descriptive survey method was used in collecting data from respondents in

order to identify the common stressor as well as the used of defense mechanisms by
students in dealing with stress. A researcher-made survey questionnaire was used
containing declarative statements that identified the commonly used defense
mechanisms in dealing with demands in academics, family pressure and conflict in a
close relationship. Data revealed that the top stressors to the students are low
grades, financial hardships and immediate changes in areas of academic, family and
close relationship. Overall, rationalization was used as the defense mechanism by
the respondents where they explain stressful situations logically with false or
different reasons to avoid real painful explanation in order to handle stress.

In the study, Stress Experiences among Graduating Students of Isabela State

University San Mateo Campus, Philippines by Leal (2012) said that the present
generation of graduating college students belongs to the most time-pressed
generation in history. The stress of the graduating students in Isabela State
University San Mateo Campus have been evaluated and analyzed through the use
of descriptive method utilizing a three-part questionnaire in order to collect data. The
results of this methodology showed that the sources of stressor came from the
academic pressures that they experienced. The knowledge of the sources effects
help their respondents in confronting their stress constructively. In order to address
the assessed data the faculty administration strengthened their guidance program
and put into consideration the physical, psychological and academic effects of
stress.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research study aims to discuss and determine the extent stress level of
students as well as teachers of senior high school department of Sacred
Heart Academy of Pasig. The proposed research design is correlational study.
This type of research design does not require any experimental procedures as
it only analyses the correlation between the two variables in our research. A
study in which the correlation between two variables are shown through
coefficients, a statistical measure that calculates the strength of the
relationship between the variables. The variables in the research show a very
strong relationship with one another and one depends on the other, this is
why a correlational type of research was chosen for the study.

Setting of the Study

This part shows where the research took place, the whole process of
the research will be held in Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig. Specifically,
within the senior high building of the school. The survey will be done for the
tracks: STEM, ABM, HUMMS, and ARDES. Questionnaires will be handed to
the students inside their classrooms.

Subject of the Study

The research focuses on the students and teachers of the senior high
department of Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig and the topic of the survey is
about the stress extent of both students and teachers in the given department.
The survey focused on giving the respondents the freedom to express their
thoughts about stress and how they perceive stress. The researchers were
present when the respondents answered the survey, in this way, they could
guide and accommodate the respondents and made sure the answers given
won’t be vague. This will help the researchers accurately tabulate their
answers. The collection of accumulated data will be held at Sacred Heart
Academy of Pasig at the Senior High building only at Grade 11 and 12
students and teachers which will be during the 2nd semester of the 2018-2019
