WEEK 1

On our first day June 11, 2018, I was really excited when we entered the gates of the
company. The first thing we saw was the sign saying “Mindanao Geothermal Production Field”
and I know this is finally it. This is finally my chance to have my OJT(On the Job Training) on my
dream company, A company I plan to be in. When we arrived we first went to the Human Resource
office of EDC to formalize the contract and pass our requirements. After passing the necessary
requirements besides the MOA they allowed us to have our medical examination in the infirmary.
When the examination was over, on the afternoon we had the company orientation. They discussed
to us about the company rules and the mission of the company to provide renewable energy to the
country. When the orientation was over they arranged our vehicle going home early because they
plan to formally start our OJT on Wednesday because we still lack our MOA but still the first day
was still exciting and the orientation is very informative.
On Wednesday June 13, 2018 the 1st official day of our OJT we waited for the company
vehicle 6:20 am which is the regular waiting time to be picked up and travel the company which
usually takes 30-45 minutes. When we arrived in the office they assigned us to our respective
supervisors and department. We introduced ourselves to our supervisors and they also introduced
themselves to us so we may know how to address them and who should we report to. Our
supervisors are very good to us, they accompanied us to our lab tour which was very interesting.
The lab was fully packed with samples and they have a lot of high end and digital equipment which
are very practical and easy to use. After the tour was over it was now time to wait for the company
vehicle and go home.
On the 2nd day June 14, 2018 of our OJT the vehicle arrived on time at 6:25 am and we
arrived in the workplace at about 7:10 am. Our supervisors talked to us and told us that we will
have our LSR (Life Saving Rules) and HES(Health, Environment, and Safety) lecture which is
required to all the workers and contractors under EDC. The lecture covered all the rules and
regulation of the company in the field of safety for its workers. The safety officer told us that safety
must not be neglected in the company and must always be followed. We learned a lot about safety
and how to react when there is an emergency. After the lecture we had an examination which is
needed for them to know if we really listened. The test is 100 items which we needed to pass to be
allowed to work. When the test was over they said we will have our results on Monday, and after
that the day is also over and we went back and waited for the vehicles to arrive.
WEEK 2

On June 18, 2018 our 3rd day of our OJT program in EDC, we woke up early and went to
work early as usual. We were given task to read on manuals for scaling tests and modules for
geothermal systems. The task was given to us to further enhance our knowledge about processes
that occur in the plant. The manuals and modules helped us understand better the processes and
steps that are important in testing for possible sources and the right way to do it. In the afternoon
Ma’am Demi gave us a small lecture about GEO 101 to let us see the bigger picture on what do
geologist do in the plant and gave us deeper understanding about the monitoring of the geothermal
power plant. The lecture covered a lot like monitoring of the power plant, source of heat, criteria
of picking the geothermal plant location, and a lot more about the plant. The lecture was very
entertaining and we learned a lot from the lecture.
On June 19, 2018 our 4th day of our OJT program in EDC, we left earlier than usual and
arrive earlier in the office. Our supervisor gave us our project that we will present after the end of
the OJT program. The project given to us is about the Calcite inhibition system or CIS of the wells.
The CIS stops the formation of calcite in the wells that clogs the pipes and lowers the efficiency
of the production of energy. We were required to find the setting depth, calcite formation potential
of the well, flash point, dosage rate, and the mechanism of inhibition by the inhibitor that is used.
In the afternoon we went to the 3 calcite inhibition systems of the power plant. We watch at the
process closely and took photos to document the processes and to familiarize with the systems as
required to us.
On June 20, 2018 our 4th day of our OJT program in EDC, heavy rain covered the whole
city early in the morning. We waited for our ride going up in a very cold weather. When we arrived
in the office we noticed that our breath can be seen and it means that the weather is cold that are
breath condenses. We were given task to have further readings about the Calcite inhibition system
that we need to report. We were given the chance to ask our superiors and supervisors about the
CIS and any further detail that we need for our report. We studied our report very hard and in the
afternoon we were given problems that we need to solve to find the dosing rate of the inhibitor to
the well. We realized that we really did learn many things from our school because of what our
teachers taught us. The retention time of the chemical was also taught to us on how to solve for it
and after that we were given a certain problem about it, we solved the problem given to us and we
were happy that our superiors recognizes that we really understood what he taught us. The entire
day was very cold even without air-conditioning system.
On June 21, 2018 our 4th day of our OJT program in EDC, we made a table to give the
specific dosing rate at given mass flow rate of the brine and we also made a table for calculation
of retention time depending on the amount of solution pumped because it was given to us as task.
Early in the morning we went to the site to conduct the calculation of the calcite retention time.
The inhibitor was pumped in the tube and it entered the deep well with a coloring. The coloring
will make the fluid flowing up to be colored, so what we needed to do was to wait for the fluid to
be colored and measure the entire time of pumping and the arrival of the colored fluid and this will
be the actual retention time of calcite inhibitor. We waited until 4pm in the afternoon but there was
still no traces of the coloring found so the test was entirely neglected. We had fun being part of the
entire test and was included in the entire operation of the CIS.
On June 22, 2018 our 4th day of our OJT program in EDC, we arrived at our regular time.
The whole office was not that busy anymore because most of the task was conducted and finished
yesterday. We only got some readings for our presentation project about the CIS and discuss about
it. In the afternoon we were given paperwork by our supervisor Sir Gene to change the format of
the old manual to the new format. When we went home the rain was very heavy and I was really
wet when I arrived at home.
WEEK 3

On June 25, 2018 8th day of our OJT program in EDC, we woke up early and went to work
early as usual. We were given a new project by our supervisor about the polymerization of Silica
in the sump. The project was introduced to us by our supervisor and explained to us how it works.
The fluid that will be re-injected in the re-injection wells are first collected and gathered in the
sumps. The fluids in the sump are then treated with inhibitors to stop the formation of silica scales.
In our project we are required to gather sample from the sump and then analyze the sample and
getting the induction time of the silica or the time it takes for the silica to polymerize rapidly. We
were not allowed to take any samples that day so we they let us practice using the UV Vis method
to familiarize with it and they let us practice the pipette to be efficient when using it.
On June 26, 2018 9th day of our OJT program in EDC, early morning it was raining and
when we arrived at work it was very cold. We read the manuals again to check the steps we need
to do in our analysis, after checking we readied the calibration standards and blank of the UV vis
to calibrate the machine and standardized the samples. After the calibration we tested the prepared
samples in the lab to further practice our pipetting skills and we were monitored by sir Kadoy and
he was happy that we are very precise in our work.
On June 27, 2018 our 10th day of our OJT program in EDC, we arrived at our usual time.
When we arrived we immediately readied our safety equipment and pails to get the samples. Before
we left we made another batch of calibration standard for the actual samples that we will take from
the sump. After making the calibration standard we went in the sump to collect the sample with
sir Gene and the contractors. We hurriedly went want after taking the samples and we tested it
every hour to monitor the silica concentration of the sample. We continued doing it until about
2pm because someone will use the UV Vis for other samples.
On June 28, 2018 our 11th day of our OJT program in EDC, we left earlier than usual and
arrive earlier in the office. We continued our lab analysis of our sample. After the doing the
analysis in the morning we went back in the sump again to have another batch of samples this time
sir Gene did not come because he can trust us already. We tested and monitored the sample the
whole day and took turns to eat lunch so that there will always be someone who will stay in the
lab to monitor and do the analysis. The results we got were satisfactory and the 2 batches followed
the same trend in the polymerization of silica.
WEEK 4

On July 2, 2018 our 13th day of our OJT program in EDC, we woke up early and went to
work early as usual. We continued with our monomeric silica analysis and studied the graphs
carefully to see the trend and compared it from past sources. We also tried to find formulas in
calculation the induction time of the monomeric silica from book sources and to approximate the
time it would reach the saturation point.
On July 3, 2018 our 14th day of our OJT program in EDC, we reached our workplace
earlier than usual and it was raining. We still continued to do our monomeric silica analysis
because the data is still not showing the saturation line of polymerization of the silica. We analyzed
the samples every 2 hours to have better results. When we finished analyzing the samples, Engr.
Kenneth Faja a chemical engineer gave us a task to work on a program to compute the energy loss,
friction loss, change in enthalpy, temperature change, pressure drop, and etc. of the steam that
flows in straight pipes. This program can help them in visualizing and to make the future analysis
easier.
On July 4, 2018 our 15th day of our OJT program in EDC, the weather was bad and it
rained even in the morning. Upon reaching the workplace, we went directly to the lab and continue
with our analysis. It is now our 10th day of monomeric silica analysis and the graph is still not
showing the saturation line so we still could not solve for the induction time of the silica samples.
After analyzing samples we analyzed and solved for the computations needed for the program that
we will make. We asked further detailed data to make the calculations more accurate.
On July 5, 2018 our 16th day of our OJT program in EDC, our ride was a bit late but we
still arrived at the usual time. We continued with our analysis of monomeric silica and the 11th
day of our analysis. After analyzing the data samples we asked Engr. Kenneth Faja about the
calculation of the flash point that is needed in another presentation task given to us. Before Engr.
Faja explained to us about the flash point he gave us a rough introduction about the work of A
“Reservoir Engineer”. We learned a lot about the being a reservoir engineer and the job of
calculating the flash point was one of the task of reservoir engineer. We now know how to get and
solve for the flash point of wells because of the discussion and explanation of Engr. Faja.
On July 6, 2018 our 17th day of our OJT program in EDC, we arrived a bit earlier and the
weather feels so cold. We continued with the monomeric silica analysis and now the 12th day of
our analysis. The graph still did not reach the saturation point and the data is still not enough to
solve for the induction time of the silica. The data means that the silica still did not reach the point
where it will not polymerize anymore, so we continued with the analysis. In the afternoon we
attended the meeting for the economic analysis plan of EDC MAGBU, they let us attend it so that
we can learn from them. We learned a lot during the meeting and learned how many profession
works together in a big company.
WEEK 5

On July 9, 2018 our 18th day of our OJT program in EDC, we went to work early as usual
because our van arrives very early. We continued with our monomeric silica analysis and had more
samples today to monitor the polymerization of the silica and make better graphs. We prepared
some solutions needed for the analysis because we used it all up and to have solutions ready for
the analysis on the next day. When we finished with the analysis it was about time to the ride going
down will arrive so we waited for the vans and went home.
On July 10, 2018 our 19th day of our OJT program in EDC, the fog were very thick and
our vision are very limited. We continued to do our monomeric silica analysis and it is our 14th
day of the analysis. The graphs are showing the saturation of the silica samples it means that the
reaction that is happening in the samples are become slower and it is showing signs of stabilization.
Sir Gene Gica told us to come with him and his crew to observe how the contractors do the
ultrasonic testing flow meter of PAD RI. We watched attentively and listened to their explanation
on how they do the testing. We observed that the equipment they use are very advance which reads
the sound waves of the brine inside the pipes.
On July 11, 2018 our 20th day of our OJT program in EDC, the weather is quite good and
we arrived in the workplace at the usual time. Upon reaching the workplace, we were suddenly
invited by our fellow OJT students that their department will have a seminar on chemical
management and permits and they said that we are allowed to attend the seminar. We asked for
our supervisor to allow us to come and attend the seminar and we listened to the seminar attentively
while writing notes. When it was about lunch time our superiors in our department called us to
come with them and return to the department because the retirement party in our department is
about to take place. We attended the party and ate with them, we were touched by the messages
and how close they were in the department. We continued with our monomeric silica analysis in
the afternoon to see if the samples are showing signs of saturation.
On July 12, 2018 our 21st day of our OJT program in EDC, our ride was a bit earlier but
and arrived earlier than usual. We decided to momentarily stop the analysis of the silica because
based on our graphs it is showing that it has reached saturation already so we will need to stop and
wait for a longer period of time to test it again. So for the entire day we prepared our reading
material, studied our report, and asked for necessary graphs and data for our report.
On July 13, 2018 our 22nd day of our OJT program in EDC, we arrived at the workplace
at the usual time and the weather is also very foggy. Every Friday they have a lot of meetings and
discussions, they allowed us to attend their meetings so we listened. We listened on the report for
the geological mapping of MAGBU and we were amazed by the job of geologists because they
climb the mountain to find information about the geothermal source of Mt. Apo. In the afternoon
the geologists of MAGBU had a online lecture from the main branch of EDC we also listened to
the lecture and was very happy to attend the lecture because we learned some things that we can
use in the future.
WEEK 6

On July 16, 2018 our 23rd day of our OJT program in EDC, we traveled safely to work
early in the morning and arrived on time. We asked our supervisor if we can present our reports
about the “Monomeric Silica Analysis” and “Calcite Inhibition System”. Our supervisor ma’am
Joann suggested that we will present our reports on Friday. We agreed with ma’am Joann’s
suggestion and we started preparing for the reports and planning on how we would present them.
So for the entire day we prepared for our reports and we focused more on the Monomeric Silica
Analysis.
On July 17, 2018 our 24th day of our OJT program in EDC, after arriving at the workplace
we immediately continued with the preparations for our reports. We listed the information that we
needed to explain and need to report about. The preparation for the “Monomeric Silica Analysis”
report was almost done so we focused more on the Calcite Inhibition System report. We put a lot
of time and effort to scrutinize our report so that it would be concise and full of detailed
information. For the entire day we prepared report and studied them in detail.
On July 18, 2018 our 25th day of our OJT program in EDC MAGBU, when we arrived at
work it was still very early so we rested a little bit to prepare ourselves. We reviewed and made
some correction for our report so that we can submit our report to our supervisor which is required
to be passed on Wednesday. We double checked our report and the data that we will submit to
make it presentable and good. We do not have internet access at the workplace so our supervisor
allowed sending the report after we arrive in our home.
On July 19, 2018, our 26th day of our OJT program in EDC MAGBU, we arrived at the
usual time at work. We corrected some parts of our report and inserted some images to make the
explanation of the report easier to understand. We practiced reporting for the whole day to prepare
ourselves on the reporting tomorrow. We also consulted our superiors at work about some details
that we are not sure about.
On July 20, 2018 our 27th day of our OJT program in EDC MAGBU, we arrived very early
at the workplace. This is the earliest time we arrived at work, the time was still 7:07 am. We
prepared ourselves and went through the report a couple of times. We prepared the projector and
the room for our presentation. When we presented our report I don’t know why I was very nervous,
maybe because of the people who were grading us were experts in this field. We presented our
report whole heartedly and we were glad that our superiors appreciated our report. In the afternoon
we had merienda and took photos with the staffs of MRM.
WEEK 7

On July 30, 2018 28th day of our OJT program in EDC, early morning when we arrived at
work it was very cold. We read the manuals again to check the steps we need to do in our analysis,
after checking we readied the calibration standards and blank of the UV Vis to calibrate the
machine and standardized the samples. After the calibration we tested the prepared samples from
the site. The entire day we analyzed samples with an interval of 2 hours.
On July 31, 2018 our 29th day of our OJT program in EDC, we arrived at our usual time.
After arriving at work I immediately prepared my safety equipment to get ready to transfer to the
site and test the samples. When we started we prepared calibration standard for the analysis and
started testing the samples. We tested it every hour to monitor the silica concentration of the sample
taken from the side stream. In the afternoon sir Gab explained to me the process and the design of
the side stream test that we are doing. I analyzed the samples and also tested the PH and
temperature of the samples, because these data are needed to make a proper plot of the test and
have accurate results.
On August 1, 2018 my last day the OJT program in EDC, when we arrived in the office I
prepared the needed documents that I need to submit to the company. The entire morning I spent
to comply for the requirements. We continued our analysis of our sample in the afternoon. I
thanked my seniors and supervisor who guided me and taught me many things I needed to learn in
the company.
