Thinking is “a means of mastery” (Lovitts 1995, p. 586).

According to Heidegger,
Calculative mind:
- “Calculates, plans, and investigates” (1966b, p. 46)
- “It sets a goal and serves specific purposes” (ibid., p. 46)
- Calculative thinking does not pause to consider the meaning inherent in “everything that
is”. It is always on the move, is restless and it “never collects itself” (Heidegger 1966b, p.
46).
- Calculative thinking is strategizing how to get from point A to point B.
- It considers many new and always different possibilities to develop that’s why it is
important to technological world.
- The productivity of a thinking is testified by the obtained results
- We think about how best to achieve whatever goals we have in the circumstances.
EXAMPLE:
Infomercials that we see on television or on the internet have one goal; to deliver the message
that a better life is a matter of learning how to achieve some goal, be it losing ten pounds,
gaining financial security, communicating effectively, or simply, painting a room.
Meditative Thinking:
- “To observe”, “to ponder”, “to awaken” an awareness of what is taking place around us
and in us.
- It does not mean being detached from reality;
- It keeps us extremely focused on our reality, on the hic et nunc of our being, ‘existence’.
- Further deepen our thinking and awareness of the roots of what moved us to think
- If we think meditatively, however, we allow ourselves to be aware of the risk implied in the
technological age and its usefulness, and we can hence act upon it.
EXAMPLE:
You have something that is problematic in your mind. Now let go and go for a walk. Come
back refreshed and let it come together. Reflect and try to empty oneself and let the mind
work on its own.

CALCULATIVE THINKING
- We think about how best to achieve whatever goals we have in the circumstances.
- Calculative thinking is strategizing how to get from point A to point B.
- It is at the heart of science and technology, both of which may be argued to be complex
forms of calculative thinking.
- Some have even argued that achieving happiness is a matter of calculative thinking.
Examples: It may be helpful here to think about the infomercials which we see so often on
television these days. The basic message of an infomercial is that a better life is a matter of
learning how best to achieve some goal, be it losing ten pounds, gaining financial security,
communicating effectively, or simply, painting a room.
