Dust pan

OBJECTIVE

1. To be able to make a dust pan.

2. To familiarize the students to use a bending machine.
3. To apply other methods of bending.
4. To enable the students to know other types of hand tools.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

Proper utilization and standardization of cutting commercial size of tin

sheet that is significant factor in cost reduction of any project. Have
knowledge of working with plan and layout in order to produce a good
quality product.

MATERIALS

1 piece 12 x 12 tin sheet

1 piece 1 x 2 x 28 wood

2 pieces of blind rivet for riveting

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Tin-snip – for cutting tin sheets of metal with gauge 18 and higher.

Back saw – for cutting woods.

Hammer – for pounding nails.

Plane – for reducing and smoothing surface.

Mallet – for pounding in tin sheet and wood chisel.

Flat file – for tapering and shaping wood.

Rasp file – used for tapering woods only.

Drill press – a device used for producing holes in wood.

Bender – a manned machine to manually bend metals.

Riveter – a metal pin passing through holes in wood to hold them together
intact along with the metal.

Drill bit – 1/8 of an inch drill bit, varies in different diameters according to
need. It is also the reason how a drill press can deliver a hole.

PROCEDURE:

1. Make a pattern drawing of a dust pan.

2. Transfer the pattern drawing in a 12” x 12” G.I. sheet.
3. Cut the G.I. sheet with a tin snip.
4. Using a bender, bend all the possible portion that a bender can
accommodate. The remaining bend, use the mallet and straight wedge for
bending.
5. Cut a 1 ½” x 5/8” x 28” wood. Smooth the surface of the wood and tapered
it by 7.5 x 8.5 face width.
6. At the end of the 7.5 x 9.4, cut it in the mid section at least 2 depth.
7. Then attach the wooden handle to the folded G.I. Sheet by means of a
rivet. Finish.

QUESTIONS:

1. What is a Tin Snip?

- It is used to cut the outlined pattern of the dust pan.

2. Why is there a need of clipping the edges of the dust pan?

- Primarily because, a metal simply does not fold without requirement
to cut the right edges, meaning to say, it is necessary, to have the
sections fold to create the desired pattern of the dust pan.

3. Is there a need of flaring out the front side of the dust pan?
- Absolutely! Because flaring the front side of the dust pan will make
the collection of the dirt easier because of its shape which prevents the
dirt from settling in the bottom of the dust pan.

4. To avoid breaking out the wood edge while riveting, what is the
best thing to do?
- The best approach is to find the midpoint of the square where the
rivets are desired to go, after which the riveter will have to separate
the two rivets from each other, so the crack it will produce will not
meet together, thus the breakdown of the wood itself.

5. Why do you use a mallet in pounding a GI Sheet?

- It is because of its surface area which when used, a perfectly flat
outcome is produced.

6. How many 12 inches by 12 inches G.I. sheet you can cut out of
4 feet by 8 feet standar G.I. sheet?
- 32 G.I Sheets [(8)*(4) (feet) = 32]

7. Name two other ways for bending G.I. sheet.

- The two other ways for bending G.I. sheet are through the usage of
grinder to create grooves in the sheet for bending and by using roll
bending

8. What will happen when you attached a longer handle to the

dust pan?
- Aside from it getting heavy to lift upwards, it will also be hard to
maneuver, as there will be too much torque that will resist the
maneuverability of the dust pan, which can cause early fatigue.

9. Why is there a need to tapered the handle?

- Because of ergonomics purposes, where it reduces your exposure to
work hazards, a hazard is defined as a physical factor within your work
environment that can harm your body. because as we all know before
tapering the handle, the shape was rectangular, also the edges might
have contained spiky contents which might cause you splinters.

10. What is the use of a flat nose vice grip?

- It can be used to flatten the surface of the dust pan after it has been
bended by the bender.
DISCUSSION:

The first project to be done was a dust pan. We got the right instruments
and a G.I. project sheet. First of all, we were asked to trace the pattern we
were given in the G.I. sheet. We then used tin snip to cut all the unnecessary
components and then instructed how to manage the bender we used to bend
the G.I. sheet. We also had to create a wooden handle in which to remove the
edges we used a smoothing plane and a flat file. The saw a certain depth at
the bottom of the handle and attached the G.I. Bending the sheet and then
drilling and riveting the holes found at the bottom and drilling another hole
near the top to hang the powder pan.

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION:

The team were able to make outside and inside caliper after this shop
practice using a flat bar and lab tools and equipment. Workers have been able
to get to know the popular instruments used in the metal store. The employees
were allowed to investigate various methods to use ball-peen hammer to bend
a flat bar. To be able to achieve the full potential of the project, you must first
trace the template to the tin metal sheet, and cut using Tin snip, after which
when cut, is ready to be folded by the bender machine, once bended, we can
now finally apply the handle, put three holes, two in the near base, and one
in the tip of the handle.
