FINAL DATA SHEET

FIELDWORK 1

Line AB = 11.82m Line AC = 21.1m

Line BC = 19.35m Line AD =
24.63m
Line CD = 7.8m
Line DE = 9.7m
Line EA = 24.85m
SOLVE FOR THE TOTAL AREA OF THE PENTAGON USING HERON’S
FORMULA.

For ΔABC

S = 11.82m + 19.35m + 21.1m

2

S = 26.14m

Area = √[𝟐𝟔. 𝟏𝟒(𝟐𝟔. 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟏𝟏. 𝟖𝟐)(𝟐𝟔. 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟏𝟗. 𝟑𝟓)(𝟐𝟔. 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟐𝟏. 𝟏)]

Area = 113.18 m2

For ΔADC

S = 21.1m + 24.63m + 7.8m

2

S = 26.77m

Area = √[𝟐𝟔. 𝟕𝟕(𝟐𝟔. 𝟕𝟕 − 𝟐𝟏. 𝟏)(𝟐𝟔. 𝟕𝟕 − 𝟐𝟒. 𝟔𝟑)(𝟐𝟔. 𝟕𝟕 − 𝟕. 𝟖)]

Area = 78.5 m2
For ΔADE

S = 24.63m + 24.85m + 9.7m

2

S = 29.59m

Area = √[𝟐𝟗. 𝟓𝟗(𝟐𝟗. 𝟓𝟗 − 𝟐𝟒. 𝟔𝟑)(𝟐𝟗. 𝟓𝟗 − 𝟐𝟒. 𝟖𝟓)(𝟐𝟗. 𝟓𝟗 − 𝟗. 𝟕)]

Area = 117.63 m2

Total area of the pentagon:

AΔABC + AΔADC +AΔADE = Apentagon

113.18 m2 + 78.5 m2 + 117.63 m2 = 309.31 m2

The total area of the pentagon is 309.31 m2

CONCLUSION

Our group have measured the sides of the pentagonal lot manually
using the measuring tape, plum bobs, and ranging poles, but by doing this
engineering method errors might occur frequently. The sagging of the
measuring tape during the field work is a big problem in this engineering
surveying method. The measuring tape still gave us a not-so-accurate
measurement because of the sags during the process. Acquiring the
lengths/horizontal distance of the sides of the pentagonal lot using this
engineering method may be difficult but it is crucial for us to know the basic
techniques in surveying a field.

Another technique that we have used in this field work is using the
Heron’s formula in getting the area of the triangles. After acquiring the
horizontal distances of the sides of the pentagonal lot to each other, we
measured 2 diagonal lines from one point to form 2 triangles. Having the
measurements of the 3 sides of the 3 triangles inside the pentagonal lot,
we have computed for total area of the pentagonal lot by using the Heron’s
formula. The answer that we have acquired had been compared to an area
calculator and it is the same with each other.

To formally conclude this field work, using the old engineering

surveying method may not give us the most accurate measurements that
we want to get but on the positive side, Heron’s formula will always give us
a reliable result in getting the area of the measured lot by cutting the lot into
triangles.
RECOMMENDATIONS

I recommend that the next field works must be done early in the morning
and not in the noon time until afternoon. It is because the students tend to
be lazy because of the heat that they are experiencing and may not
cooperate well in the field work.
