2 ELECTRICAL MOTORS
An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy usually
torque driving some kind of load. This conversion is usually obtained through the generation of a magnetic
field by means of a current flowing into one or more coils. Electric motors can be powered by direct
current (DC) sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or by alternating current (AC)
sources, such as a power grid, inverters or electrical generators. An electric generator is mechanically
identical to an electric motor, but operates in the reverse direction, accepting mechanical energy (such as
from flowing water) and converting this mechanical energy into electrical energy.

3 WORKING PRINCIPLE & APPLICATIONS

Electric motors operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction, the fundamental principle of
electromagnetic motors is based on the mechanical force that acting on the conductor through which
electric current passes and it is located in the magnetic field. The direction of the mechanical force is
perpendicular to the conductor and the magnetic field.

Electric motors have found widespread application in various industrial processes, systems and devices.
These are some of the application fields:

• In industrial processes – motors with highly standardized characteristics and dimensions

• Blowers and special pumps
• Household appliances and devices
• Machine and power tools
• Electric watches – with small motors
• Hybrid vehicles (such as Tesla motor)
• Ship propulsion – motors with high capacity and power
• Pipeline compression
• Pumped-storage applications

All electric motors are powered by two sources. They are mainly powered by direct current (DC) sources
(batteries, rectifiers or motor vehicles), but some are powered by alternating current (AC) sources (power
grid, generators or inverters).

4 MOTOR CONSTRUCTION
The main components of a typical electric motor are:

• Rotor – The moving part of the motor. It turns the shaft to transfer the mechanical power.
• Stator – The stationary part, which has windings or permanent magnets.
• Air gap – It is the space between stator and rotor.
• Windings – Wires that are wrapped around the iron magnetic core.

5 TYPES OF MOTORS
Electric motors can operate on three different principles: magnetic (the most common), electrostatic and
piezoelectric. Based on the type of electricity for their work, they can be divided into two categories:

5.1 AC MOTORS
AC motors operates on Alternating current, single phase or three Phase. AC motors can be divided into
two types.

• Synchronous Motors
• Asynchronous (Induction) Motors

A.C. electrical motors, and are driven by alternating current, for e.g. the synchronous motor, which always
runs at synchronous speed. Here the rotor is an electromagnet which is magnetically locked with stator
rotating magnetic field and rotates with it. The speed of motors is given by
𝑓
𝑁𝑠 = 120 ⁄𝑃

Ns - Synchronous speed

f - Frequency of AC Supply

P - No. of Poles

And induction motors rotor run on slightly less speed then synchronous speed. Difference between
synchronous and actual speed is called slip & is given by.
𝑁𝑠 − 𝑁
𝑆𝑙𝑖𝑝 =
𝑁𝑠
Ns – Synchronous speed

N – Rotor Speed

5.2 DC MOTORS
Use direct current for operation. They differ in how the windings are connected, as well as by their
characteristics. There are four main types of DC motors.

5.2.1 Permanent Magnet DC Motors

The permanent magnet motor uses a permanent magnet to create field flux. This type of DC motor
provides great starting torque and has good speed regulation, but torque is limited so they are typically
found on low horsepower applications.

5.2.2 Series DC Motors

In a series DC motor, the field is wound with a few turns of a large wire carrying the full armature current.
Typically, series DC motors create a large amount of starting torque, but cannot regulate speed and can
even be damaged by running with no load. These limitations mean that they are not a good option for
variable speed drive applications.

5.2.3 Shunt DC Motors

In shunt DC motors the field is connected in parallel (shunt) with the armature windings. These motors
offer great speed regulation due to the fact that the shunt field can be excited separately from the
armature windings, which also offers simplified reversing controls.

5.2.4 Compound DC Motors

Compound DC motors, like shunt DC motors, have a separately excited shunt field. Compound DC motors
have good starting torque but may experience control problems in variable speed drive applications.
