b) Compare the weights of equal length of hollow shaft and solid shaft to transmit a
given torque for the same maximum shear stress. The material for both shafts is
same and inner diameter is 2/3 of outer diameter in case of hollow shaft.

4. A cylindrical shaft made of steel of yield strength 700 MPa is subjected to static loads
consisting of bending moment 10 kN-m and a torsional moment 30 kN-m. Determine the
diameter of the shaft using different theories of failure, and assuming a factor of safety of

5. A mild steel shaft of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of 2000N-m and a


torque "T" if the yield point of steel in tension is 200 N/mm2.Find the maximum value of
this torque without causing yielding of the shaft according to (a). Maximum principal

UNIT-II

1. A Cantilever beam made of cold drawn carbon steel of circular cross-section as


shown in fig, is subjected to a load which varies from –F to 3F. Determine the
maximum load that this member can withstand for an indefinite life using a factor of
safety as 2. The theoretical stress concentration factor is 1.42 and the notch sensitivity
is 0.9. Assume the following values. Ultimate stress = 550 MPa, Yield stress = 470
MPa, Endurance limit = 275 MPa, Size factor = 0.85, Surface finish factor = 0.89

2. A steel cantilever is 200mm long. It is subjected to an axial load which varies from
150N (compression) to 450N (Tension) and also a transverse load at its free end which
varies from 80N up to 120N down. The cantilever is of circular cross-section. It is of
diameter 2d for the first 50mm and of diameter d for the remaining length. Determine its
diameter taking a factor of safety of 2. Assume the following values:
Yield Stress = 330 MPa; Endurance limit in reversed loading = 300 MPa
Correction factors = 0.7 in reversed axial loading = 1 in reversed bending
Stress concentration factor = 1.44 for bending = 1.64 for axial loading
Size effect factor = 0.85;
Surface effect factor = 0.90
Notch sensitivity index = 0.90

3. A simply supported beam has a concentrated load at the centre which fluctuates from
a value of P to 4P. The span of the beam is 500 mm and its cross section is circular
with a diameter of 60 mm. Taking for the beam material an ultimate stress of
700MPa, a yield stress of 500MPa, endurance limit of 330MPa for reversed bending,
and a factor of safety of 1.3, calculate the maximum value of P. Take a size factor of
0.85 and a surface finish factor of 0.9

4. Derive the expression to calculate the torque required to raise and lower the load by a
Square threaded screw

5. The lead screw of a lathe has ACME threads of 50 mm outside diameter and 8
mm pitch. The screw must exert an axial pressure of 2500 N in order to drive the
tool carriage. The thrust is carried on a collar 110 mm outside diameter and 55
mm inside diameter and the lead screw rotates at 30 r.p.m. determine (a) the
power required to drive the screw and (b) the efficiency of the lead screw.
Assume a coefficient of friction of 0.15 for the screw and 0.12 for the collar

1. a) Explain the failures of riveted joints with neat sketches?

b) Design a double riveted doyble strap butt joint for the longitudinal seam of a boiler
shell, 750 mm in diameter to carry a maximum steam pressure of 1.05 N/mm2. The
allowable stresses are σt = 35 MPa, σc = 52.5 MPa and τ = 28 MPa. Assume the
efficiency of joint as 75%.
2. a) Explain the procedure for designing a longitudinal and circumferential joint for
boiler.
b) Design the longitudinal and circumferential joint for a boiler whose diameter is
2.4 meters and is subjected to a pressure of 1 N/mm2. The longitudinal joint is a
triple riveted butt joint with an efficiency of about 85% and the circumferential
joint is a double riveted lap joint with an efficiency of about 70%. The pitch of
the outer rows of the rivets is to be double than in the inner rows and width of
the cover plates is unequal. The allowable stresses are σt = 77 MPa, σc = 120
MPa and τ = 56 MPa

3. a) What is an eccentric riveted joint? Explain the method adopted for designing such a
joint?
b) A bracket is riveted to a column by 6 rivets of equal size
as shown in Fig. It carries a load of 100 KN at a distance
of 250 mm from the column. If the maximum shear stress
in the rivet is limited to 63 MPa, find the diameter of the
rivet.

4. a) what is an eccentric loaded welded joint? Discuss the procedure for designing
such a joint.
b) A rectangular steel plate is welded as a cantilever to a
vertical column and supports a single concentrated load P, as
shown in below figure. Determine the weld size if shear stress
in the same is not to exceed 140 MPa.

5. a) what are the assumptions made in the design of welded joint?


b) A rectangular cross-section bar is welded to a support by means of fillet welds as
shown in below figure. Determines the size of the welds, if the permissible shear
stress in the weld is limited to 75 MPa.
UNIT-IV

1. a) How the core diameter of a bolt is determined when a bracket having a rectangular
base is bolted to wall by four bolts and carries an eccentric load parallel to axis of
the bolt?

eccentric load perpendicular to the axis of the bolt

b) A bracket as shown in below figure supports a load of 30


KN. Determine the size of bolts, if the maximum allowable
tensile stress in the bolt material is 60 MPa. The distances are
L1= 80 mm, L2 = 250 mm, and L = 500 mm.

3. A bracket is bolted to a column by 4 bolts of equal size as shown in


Fig. It carries a load of 50 kN at a distance of 150 mm from the
centre of column. If the maximum allowable stress in the bolts is to
be limited to 150 MPa, the distances from centre of bolts 1 and 2, 2
and 3, 3 and 4, 1 and 4 is 200 mm. Determine the diameter of bolt.

4. Name different types of springs and give their applications. Distinguish between closely
coiled and open coiled helical springs

5. Design a helical spring for a spring balance under tension from the following data:
i. Length of the scale = 50 mm; Spring index = 5;
ii. Maximum load to be weighed = 1000 N;
iii. Permissible shear stress for spring material = 500 MPa;
iv. Modulus of rigidity = 80 GPa.
