FINAL Lesson Plan Template 2018-2019

Name Matthew Van Roeyen

Grade Level 3rd Grade

Subject Area Science

Introduction: Students will discover how to create a hypothesis using experimentation. They
will learn how to prove, or disprove, a hypothesis.

Daily Reviews: For short-term memory of recently taught material, students will take short
quizzes asking questions relating to scientific theory. Questions provided will
include defining an observation, the method of asking questions for scientific
query, questions regarding how you form a hypothesis, questions regarding
information collected, questions identifying an observation, questions regarding
what to do with the information collected, creating a testable question, identifying
an observation, how to get a correct hypothesis, the meaning of an analysis,
making a prediction, where observations occur, and what you can use when
making observations. Meaningful feedback will be provided at the conclusion of
each quiz. Reviews, and homework checks, will be brief.

Daily Objective: The daily objective will be to create a hypothesis, with different experiments,
using the scientific method. During each lesson, students will write down the
stated daily objective, and will record observations using the scientific method on
various experiments. Students will record observations using their five senses.

Concept and Skill Students will learn the big concepts in the subject of Science by understanding
Development and the Scientific Method. The instructor will explain how scientists use the Scientific
Application: Method to try to provide logical explanations for how things work. Examples used
could be the evolution of certain animals, or the evolution of stars. Concepts
linked could include a virtual field trip to the museum of science and industry
through the use of vr technology, or through the use of any other type of digital
device for between fifteen to twenty minutes. Concepts linked include information
obtained through the virtual field trip. Students will take notes, and observe the
different animals during the field trip, and the evolution of stars in the universe.
Students will use visual representations of objects, and be held accountable for
taking notes and keeping records. Formative assessment will be provided if
necessary through oral instructions. According to “NEPF Standard 1, Level 4, the
teacher fully activates all students’ initial understandings (including
misconceptions and incomplete understandings) through the use of multiple
methods and/or modes.” (http://www.rpdp.net/)

Guided Practice Instructor will provide guided practice by helping to set up the virtual field trip on
(Teacher led): digital devices. Instructor will provide assistance to help students learn about the
different aspects of the Scientific Method. Students can break into groups to
discuss their findings through the virtual field trip. Through groups, the classroom
can be divided for student reflection, inquiry, discovery, discussion problem-
solving, and analysis. Students can also watch a five minute video regarding the
museum of science and industry using a video projector. Students will engage in
discussion regarding what they saw in the museum. According to “NEPF
Standard 2, indicator 1, the teacher purposefully employs all students’ cognitive
abilities and skills.” (http://www.rpdp.net/)

Group Practice (Whole Assigned homework could include a written set of questions involving the virtual
class or small groups): field trip that aligns with the curriculum objectives. Reinforced skills, and concepts
taught, would include having students create their own example of the scientific
method using any subject they choose. According to “NEPF Standard 3, indicator
1, the teacher will provide opportunities for extended, productive discourse
between the teacher and student(s) and among students.”

Independent Practice Students will practice independent practice by creating their own hypothesis.
(Alone): They must use the stages of the Scientific Theory to create a logical hypothesis,
and then test that hypothesis. According to “NEPF Standard 4, indicator 1, the
teacher and all students understand what students are learning, why they are
learning it, and how they will know if they have learned it.”

Homework Students will make their own hypothesis at home. They must use the stages of
Assignments: the Scientific Theory to create a logical hypothesis, and then test that hypothesis.
According to “NEPF Standard 5, indicator 1, the teacher will plan on-going
learning opportunities based on evidence of all students’ current learning status.”

Closure: Students will review the skills, and concepts, from class during class, and on their
own. They will be able to explain what they have learned, and how to apply the
Scientific Method.
