Chapter 1

The problem and its background

Introduction

Bullying is one type of violence that threatens a youth’s well-being in schools

and neighborhoods. The impacts of bullying are felt by individuals, families, schools,
and society and may result in youth’s feeling powerless, intimidated, and humiliated by
the aggressive acts of other youth(s). Bullying occurs in many settings, such as schools,
after-school programs, or in a youth’s neighborhood. It emerges from an interaction of
complex factors related to individual characteristics of youth, relationships with their
peers and adults, and school or community norms.

According to ABA (Anti-Bullring Alliance), bullying is the repetitive, intentional

hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship
involves an imbalance of power. It can happen face to face or online. (ABA 2018)

The world health organization (WHO) on the other hand describes bullying as
a multifaceted form of mistreatment, mostly seen in schools and the workplace. It is
characterized by the repeated exposure of one person to physical and/or emotional
aggression including teasing, name-calling, mockery, threats, harassment, tauting,
hazing, social exclusion or rumors. (WHO 2010)

Bullying can have many faces sometimes bullying isn’t straight forward as
someone openly being horrible to another person. There is such a thing where
someone pretends to be your friend or is your ‘friends’ but uses their power to bully you.

This research will help define bullying and discusses the effect of bullying
among students, how to reduce the incidence of bullying and to address the root causes
of bullying.

affect different groups of student’s, occurs in different types of school, or affect students
behavior in different ways. These distinctions allow readers to differentiate between
students who were either physically or socially bullied, and identify those students who
were bullied both physically and socially.

bullying cases on elementary and high school of both private and public schools on
2014 rose by 21% or a total of 6,363 cases, compare with the 5,236 on 2013. This
translates to 31 daily bullying cases from a divsor of 201 school days. The statistics was
disclosed by Rep. Gerald Anthony Gullas Jr., A member of the house committee on
basic education. (DepEd 2015)
