Selenia Site Planning and Pre-Installation Guide

Part Number 9-600-0100

Revision 003
Site Planning and Pre-Installation Guide

1.0 Introduction
This guide outlines requirements and considerations when planning the site for installation of the
Selenia System.
There are many considerations when selecting a location for the Selenia System. Included in these
considerations are the following:
• location for patient throughput
• space for patient and medical personnel
• input power source and sufficient wall outlets
• environmental concerns
• shielding
• state and local requirements.
• Seismic requirements (see “Seismic Requirements” on page 17.)

2.0 Room Planning and Layout

The exam room layout should be pre-planned before the arrival of Selenia. A Typical Room Layout is
shown. Check the height and width of the room door to ensure it will accommodate the Gantry and
Acquisition Workstation.

Figure 1-1: Selenia —Typical Room Layout

Legend for Figure 1

Room: 2.75 x 3.65 m (9 x 12 ft.) Ground connection

Scale: 1 Square = 30.4 cm (1 ft.) 100/120 VAC, 3.5 A

220/230/240 VAC, 2.0 A. Hospital grade plug.
220/208/220/230/240 VAC Ethernet and phone jacks
2A (35 A max). Permanent connection.
Interconnect cables through conduit.

Site Planning and Pre-Installation Guide

Other factors to consider when planning the room layout are:

• C-arm clearances—The C-arm requires 1.3 m (53” minimum) to accommodate rotation, and 2.1
m (84” minimum) to accommodate raising the C-arm to its upper limit.
• When planning the room layout, take into consideration extra wall and ceiling clearance for
movement and handling of C-arm controls.
• Movement clearance—Always take into consideration space allocation for patient and technolo-
gist movement. Avoid obstructions in the room that may hinder access to the unit controls or the
patient.
• Storage—Provide convenient storage for patient records and system accessories. If accessory
storage is not possible within the exam room, make arrangements for safe storage close by.
• Physical and Environmental Requirements
• Recommended Power Source Requirements.
• To ensure proper isolation, a distance of 1.5 m (59”) must be maintained between the patient and
any non-patient devices.

2.1 Access Clearances (Recommended)

Having adequate room for clinical procedures, the full range of system movement, and servicing is
another important consideration. Maintain or exceed the recommended minimum clearances listed
below:
Operator Console: 60.9 cm (24 inches) on all sides
Gantry with C-arm: 30.4 cm (12 inches) at rear, 30 inches (76.2 cm) on each side of
C-arm (for complete rotation of C-arm)
Work and Patient Area: 76.2 cm (30 inches) diameter (minimum) between Gantry, C-arm
and Operator Console

2.2 System Component Sizes

Knowing the size of the system components, the installer can adequately plan for:
• flooring type for mounting and weight considerations
• proper doorway clearance
• installation space
• future servicing
• technologist and patient movement
• equipment movement
Refer to the dimensions for the system components in the specifications section of this document
(page 4).

2.3 Softcopy Workstation (SCW) Recommendations

To achieve optimal viewing condition of images on the SCW:
• Position the SCW next to the film changer at a 45 degree angle relative to the changer. This will
minimize the amount of light reflecting from the film changer on the surface of the SCW moni-
tors.
• The ambient light or illuminance in the viewing room should conform to the ACR recommenda-
tion of 50 lux or less.
• Ensure that light emissions from other sources (i.e. PC monitors, portable lights, etc.) do not
reflect off the SCW monitors.

7.0 Interconnect Cables

Optional cable sizes other than the ones mentioned below are available.
• Verify that the distance between the Gantry and the Operators Console will accommodate the
two 20-foot multi conductor cables and the ground wire.
• Verify that the distance between the Gantry and the Mains is less than 4.55 meters (15 feet) to
accommodate the input line cord.

Caution: Provide strain relief for the Mains cable: shall not flex, move, etc. The system is considered
permanently connected according to its safety classification.

7.1 Conduit, Wireway, and Threshold Runs

• Verify that in wall wiring, external wall wiring, or external floor wiring meets the criteria detailed
in the system specifications.
• If the wiring does not meet the specifications, determine the necessary changes and make
arrangements for these changes.
• Make a note of any important details of these arrangements in the Checklist.
• When using conduit runs between the Gantry and the Operator Console, observe the following
recommendations:
• Use 90° elbows with access covers for cables needing routing around elbows or corners.
• Use a 2 inch (5.08 cm) conduit down the walls (for rooms with a sub-ceiling)
• Use 2 x 2 inch (5.08 x 5.08 cm) wire way runs across the sub-ceiling.
The 2 x 2 inch (5.08 x 5.08 cm) wire way method removes the requirement for elbows, and makes
the cable installation process more efficient.

8.0 Structural Shielding

The walls of the site in which the Selenia is used must meet local and state guidelines for radiation
shielding and should be reviewed by a qualified Medical Physicist.

8.1 The Operator Console Shield

All Selenia systems are equipped with an operator radiation shield. This shield, which is attached to
the Operator Console, is designed to meet or exceed all state and local shielding requirements for
operator shielding only. The radiation shield shall provide a minimum of 0.5 mm of lead equivalent
attentuation.

9.0 Separation of Patient and Non-Patient Areas

Non-patient system components must not be installed in the Patient Area.

WARNING! Maintain a 1.5 meter distance between the

patient and any non-patient equipment.
1.5m

10.0 Selenia Specification and Room Planning Checklist

The Selenia Specification and Room Planning Checklist (Appendix A), provides a checklist of all site
preparation steps which should be completed prior to receiving the Selenia System.

11.0 Room Layout Work Sheet

The Room Layout Work Sheet (Appendix A), is a template which can be used to facilitate establishing
a viable room layout. The steps that follow provide guidance when using this work sheet for site
planning.
1. Make copies of the grid and the Selenia System component cutouts. Cut out the grid and place it
on a suitable working surface. Note that each grid square is equal to 30 cm (1 ft).
2. Cut out the system components from the work sheet.
3. Outline the designated room size (to scale) on the grid.
4. Position the component cutouts to layout the desired work space.
