This correspondence is in regards to Gillian Fernandez a University of Arizona Bachelor of

Science nursing student graduating December 2019. I am honored to write this letter of
recommendation for Gillian, a stellar candidate for the William P. Foley Scholarship. I had the
pleasure to work with Gillian during this fall semester as she was a clinical and didactic student
in NURS 366 “Acute and Chronic Illness Management”.

Ms. Fernandez demonstrated professionalism, competency, accountability, and leadership during

the pediatric course and clinical rotation at Tucson Medical Center. Gillian was highly
motivated and demonstrated a distinguished level of scholarship, integrity, leadership, and
service to others. Gillian arrived early to class and clinical every day as well as submitted
assignments days before they were due. Gillian demonstrated strong interpersonal
communication skills. She was not afraid to ask questions or was not intimidated to offer
suggestions to faculty or healthcare professionals. A strength of Ms. Fernandez is her attention
to detail. Gillian was not afraid to let faculty know in a class presentation that information was
presented incorrectly. Gillian also corrected an RN on an insulin dose calculation for a child
that she was caring for.

Gillian is driven, motivated and eager to learn. Gillian strives to be the best she can be. After the
first clinical day Gillian met with faculty when all students had left post-conference. Gillian
asked for feedback on how she could improve. Gillian’s passion to learn has continued
throughout the semester. Gillian has added an app on her phone to challenge her with nursing
case studies. Gillian is a team player. She makes herself available to help others when own work
is complete.

Ms. Fernandez continues to succeed academically in the highly competitive rigorous nursing
program at the University of Arizona. Ms. Fernandez has contributed to a dynamic and
culturally competent health-care workforce with a strong evidenced-based practice foundation.
The University of Arizona, College of Nursing has prepared Gillian with a strong work ethic to
succeed in a fast-paced environment and learn at the next level. Gillian indicates a strong
passion to serve our community and is ready for the challenge to become a registered nurse.
Without hesitation, I highly recommend Gillian Fernandez for the William P. Foley Scholarship.
Gillian meets all criteria as a worthy candidate for this merit award.
