Offerings to Lord Shiva

1. Is pouring cow’s milk over shivling anyway related with the poison lord Shiv consumed
during Samudramanthan?

Ans> Yes, the pouring cow's milk over Shivling is related to Samudramanthan. During 
the Samudramanthan The great poison named Halahal is emerged. Devtas went to Lord 
Shiva to resolve this issue. Lord Shiva consume the entire Poison and kept in his neck.

To cool the heat effects, Devtas do abhishekam with Holy Ganga water and Milk. As a 
symbol of that we offer milk and water to Lord shiva.

2. Can we not use any other animal’s milk? What can be the consequences?

Ans> In vedic sculpture Cow is considered as the auspicious animal in which all devtas is
residing.  Since we take the purest and divine things to our Deity so we prefer Cow milk. 

So it should be avoided to use any other animal milk.
 The materials for worshipping Him: Gangajal, akshat (uncooked rice), flowers,
 Panchamrut (made of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar), Nadachari (kalava, colourful 
thread), Yagyopavit, fruits, sweets, incense (agarbatti), dhoop.

3. Why is water poured after milk? Which mantra should be recited during pouring of 
milk and water?

Ans> Pouring milk is a part of abhishekam. It is a process of cleansing. When we pour 
milk over Shivlinga that will give the soothing effects to Hotness in it. After milk we pour
milk so that it get cleaned. 

Scientifically it is proven that when liquid come in contact with Shiv ling it get charged 
and create a positive environment. This will help us to get blessing and positive energy of
Shiva.

One should Chant OM NAMAH SHIVAY. It is a powerful mantra and will please lord 
Shiva.

4. Which is  the best time to offer abhishek of Milk on Shivling?
Ans> Generally Abhishekam should perform during the presence of Sunlight. In Hindu 
dharma all the auspicious work is done in morning.  Hence it is preferable to do it in 
morning hours.
