Introduction

School is a second home for students who are persevering to reach Academic Excellence in
life. A place that serves as a training ground for students who needs improvement which can
help to build students own career. This are the scenario that students should encounter in
school but in present times, bullying exists either in school or everywhere. The researcher
observed that bullying can cause trauma, anxiety, depression lack of self-confidence and etc.
Bullying starts in early age. Child starts to build an initial concept of bullying-such as threats,
harsh jokes, physical assaults and etc. Bullying is considered a common form of violence in
schools that has different stages and different impact to the academic performance of the
student.

” Various studies indicated that bullying makes schools to be unsafe places for schools’
students and it contributes in the belief that some schools are become not safe anymore”
(Maliki et al., 2016). Bullying must be solved and observe as much as possible to prevent
much worst cases.

In this research, the researcher will find out what are the factors affecting the bully and
victim which can help to know what are the possible ways to help and promote a good
environment specially in classroom. The impact of bullying to the victim. The study aims to
know the cause and effect of bullying specially to the victim.

In addition, bullying is important to solve not only to prevent worst cases but also to know
the background of the victim and the environment of the bully that can help to assess what
proper council will be given to the students. In this way the researcher will gather data and
investigation in order for the researcher to come up to the best solution. This research is
significant for the students awareness for keeping the school environment safe as home.

School is the students second home that is important to maintain a good environment
because it will affect their academic excellence that will mold the students to become better
and a good role model to the individual specially in student present generation.

“Be A buddy not a bully” because Bullying is not just a word but a traumatic experience to
people specially to the students self-confidence and growth.
Background of the study

Bullying has many types of aggressive behavior against others such as, verbal by calling nasty
names, physical by kicking, pushing or tripping up and social by everyone stopped talking to
you. Relational bullying which a student is treated invisible. Cyber bullying which a student is
experiencing bullying by the use of social media.

Academic achievement is the first aspect which influences bullying at school. therefore, bullied
student live within fear, self-blame, feel weak will affects students personality traits and self-
confidence, In this situation, student are not able to study well and students might hate going to
school. Furthermore, student will lose their opportunities to participate with others or enjoy
school activities. Hence, students will gain less academic performance and low educational
attainment. Both bullies and victims feel more negative about school, and persistent bullying
may lead to stress and depression. Bullying can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, hopelessness
and isolation. Students can miss lessons or are scared to attend school. Students also lose
concentration Students who are bullied cannot concentrate in schools, so their grades may be a
warning sign that a student is being bullied. A child’s grade may also suffer if a student misses a
lot of school due to bullying. Victims of bullying will complain of headaches, stomachaches, and
overall fatigue. This issues are usually caused by the effect of bullying that will can cause
mental, physical, emotional and spiritual problems.

One adverse effect of bullying is that it also leads to suicide. While suicide is rare in bullied
children, the other effects of bullying are also devastating and last well beyond the time when the
child is actually bullied. Some schools are having hard times to take action to this situation
because it has different impact to each student that experiencing bullying. Bullying can cause
trauma and worst is suicide so, its significant to take action as soon as possible.
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of Bullying in the Academic Performance of
Cachapero Learning School Senior High school students which can be used by the students,
teachers and administrators in determining the factors and effect if a student is a victim of
bullying in school.This study attempts to answer the following questions: What is the impact of
Bullying in academic performance? What are the causes of Bullying?What are the effects of
Bullying? What are the ways to prevent this incident?

Assumption of the study

This research is anchored that the respondents are honest and objective in expressing their
insights about the impact of bullying towards academic excellence that will be used as the basis
for the propose activities, seminar and orientation that can help to have awareness and prevention
to some students in CLSI. Moreover, students will have a wide perspective to what to do in case
of these cases so that they will be able to protect themselves to the bully students.

Significance of the study

The findings of this study would provide explanation that can be used as a tangible reference for

more meaningful educational services. Results could be useful in the solution of problems related

Cachapero Learning School Inc. Definitely, students, teachers, administrators, parents could

benefit from the study:

Students of Cachapero Learning Junior High School. They would find essential

feedback and information with regards to the research problem which could provide guidance

and direction on better performance for promoting a good environment in school specially in

classrooms.
Teachers. This could also a guide for teachers to give warning signs to prevent further

worst cases. With the result, they could make approaches and strategies on how to solve the

dilemma between the students experiencing bully trauma.

Administrators. They would use the result of the study as the reference in formulating

school policies and program. Through the result, they can propose and initiate in – service

training and seminars for the teachers. The results can shed light in evaluating the school

environment for the good improvement of the school.

Parents. This study would be beneficial since the result will give to the parents it will

serve as a warning for the parents and students to be more hands on and carefully watch their

own child to prevent cases that might affect their child.

Scope and Delimitation

Out of thousands of students, only the Grade 7 with 4 section are selected in Cachapero Learning

School. Random sampling was used as a sample in conducting the questionnaire checklist. This

study will limit its coverage on the JuniorHigh schoolwith 50 respondents from Grade 7 that are

randomly selected by using fish ball technique. Its main purpose is to identify the impact of

Bullying towards Academic Performance of Junior High School Specifically Grade 7 students.

This study will consider every aspect of student’s personal information that has an impact on

their academic performances such as their gender and age. Each of the respondents are given

same questionnaire checklist to answer. And this study focuses on the current Junior high school

of the present school year, 2019-2020.


Definition of Terms

In order to understand fully this study, the following terms were operationally defined.

 Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a
real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be
repeated, over time.
 Mental health is the level of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness. It
is the state of someone who is "functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and
behavioral adjustment.
 Physical health is the state of being free from illness or injury. It can cover a wide range
of areas including healthy diet, healthy weight, dental health, personal hygiene and sleep
 Emotional health can lead to success in work, relationships and health. In the past,
researchers believed that success made people happy.

 Spiritual health is an important component of an individual’s well-being and an integral


aspect of the holistic health philosophy.

 Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural


disaster.

 Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don't go away – when they're ongoing and
happen without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that makes it hard
to cope with daily life. Everyone feels anxious from time to time, but for someone
experiencing anxiety, these feelings aren't easily controlled.

 Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of
interest.

 Verbal bullying with cruel spoken words, involves ongoing name calling threatening,
and making disrespectful comments about someone’s attribute.

 Physical bullying with aggressive physical intimidation, involves repeated hitting,


kicking, tripping, blocking pushing, and touching in unwanted and inappropriate ways

 Relational bullying with exclusionary tactics, involves deliberately preventing someone


from joining or being part of a group, or social activity.

 Cyber bullying involves haranguing someone by spreading mean words, lies, and false
rumors through emails, text messages and social media posts.
Review of Related Literature

Foreign and Local Studies

Cythia (2014) analyzed bullying impact on student’s performance either in short or long term.
She found that there are differences in relationship between bullying level and academic
performance depending on student´s academic achievement.
Nadine (2014) investigated bullying impact on student’s ability to academically succeed. Nadine
found that bullied students have feel of fear from coming to school because they feel that they
are unsafe; therefore, they are unable to concentrate which reelect negatively on their academic
success.
Mundbjerg et al. (2014) analyzed the relationship between bullying in elementary school in
Denmark. They found that bullied students have lower academic achievement in 9th grade and
bullying impacts are larger if it is more severe.
Placidius (2013) found that physical bullying was perceived as a dominant bullying element.
Boys prefer to be bullies more than girls. Poor academic performance was as impact of bullying.
Mehta et al. (2013) found that when students feel that bullying is a phenomenon in their school,
they feel that they are unsafe which reflected on less engaged in school community. Therefore,
they have less motivation to do well at school and they do not participate in school activities.
Bullying affects student’s academic achievement in various ways.
Ammermueller (2012) found that being bullied has a significantly negative impact on present
and future students’ performance in school Brank et al. (2012) indicated that bullying victims are
weak, shy, and anxious. They added that victims’ performance is poor in school and seek to
avoid attending school classes for the purpose of avoiding victimization. Victimization
experiencing can lead to poor academic performance and leading to absenteeism.
Juvonen, et al. (2011) said that bullying experiences affect victims’ academic achievement in
both direct and indirect ways. So bullied student by his peers may become worried and afraid of
being teased, therefore he may stop participating in class or may has e trouble in concentrating
on class work because of fear. They added that students who are often subject to be bullied by
their peers during school period have less engagement at school and poor grades.
Konishi et al. (2010) confirmed that interpersonal relationships within school environment
influence academic achievement.
Roman and Murillo (2011) found that aggression in schools has a negative effect on academic
achievement in Latin America. They affirmed that students who have been physically or verbally
abused perform less.
Marcela and Javier (2011) found that bullying is a serious problem throughout Latin America
they indicated that; students who suffer from their peer’s aggression have lower performance in
reading and math than those who do not; and students who are in classrooms with more physical
or verbal violence perform are worse than those in less violent classroom settings.
Konishi et al. (2010) found that school bullying affects negatively academic achievement.
Skrzypiec (2008) found that third of students who had been seriously bullied reported having
serious difficulties in concentrating and paying attention in class because of bullying and the fear
associated with.
Glew ies.ccsenet.org International Education Studies Vol. 10, No. 6; 2017 47 et al. (2005)
reported that bullying prevents concentration and subsequent academic achievement since
bullying victims lose interest in learning and experience a drop in academic grades because their
attention is distracted from learning.
Mishna (2003) indicated that bullying is “a form of aggression in which there is an imbalance of
power between the bully and the victim that occurs largely in the context of the peer group”.

This study identified the impact of bullying on academic excellence of junior high school of
Cachapero Learning School. Questionnaire checklist will conduct from the grade 7 respondents
of Cachapero Learning School.
Questionaire checklist was drawn up to ascertain the view of the students about the research
topic. Some of the points are: the impact of bullying in academic performance, causes of
bullying to students and the effect of bullying to students. Age and Gender will specify for the
gathering of data to the respondents

This table shows the output of this study: Educational, Moral development, School activities,
Parental guidance specially if a students stays at home alone without any guardian, and Close
relationship of a school to students in the instance of observing and preventing this kind of
incidence. Process that can help to align the wrong mindset of the students: Guidance,
Counseling, Seminar, Quality time and workshop. Output the behavior of the student if the
students are increasing or decreasing the grades of the activities in school, if student accomplish
things on time, and if the student is experiencing traumatic or feeling of self-less.
