INTRODUCTION
It’s hard to rank decks into tiers. This is difficult to do in any format: do you rank by
popularity or by win percent? How many decks can fit in the top tier? If a certain deck
is popular among new players, do you take that into account? However, in multiplayer
commander, where there are no big tournaments, there is no national or international
commander meta-game. So where do you even start?
Competitive communities exist, and these communities do tend to gravitate
towards a handful of established decks. No one can conclusively say these are the best

EDH.
Perhaps calling them top decks is a misnomer. Let’s call
them the most respected decks. Of all the most respected
decks, I’m going to present 20 of them in this document. I
won’t bother trying to rank them: how good each deck is
depends on the meta you bring it to. However, each deck does
come with the guarantee that it can preform, and do so
consistently.
But first a word of warning. Most of these decks can’t be
brought to the average commander table: no one will have
fun, many of these decks will win before many casual decks
will cast a single spell. So what are these decks for? If you are
in a playgroup that is more interested in playing
high-variance vintage than decks full of pet-cards, these decks
are for you. If you are entering a commander tournament or
competitive event, these decks are perfect for you. Or perhaps
you really hate a certain player at your local shop, and you
want to humiliate him. To each their own.
These decks should not be brought to an unsuspecting
commander table with no warning. Just don’t do it. You’ll win
a lot, it won’t be fair, and you’ll ruin the entire table’s fun.
With all that said, let’s dive into the first deck.

CHAPTER 2

ONE CARD KILL DECKS

When people think of competitive EDH,


these are the decks they think of.

Few things in magic is as elegant as the single-card-combo. Wait, did I say elegant? I
meant to say broken-beyond repair.
The following decks are decks centered around finding and casting a single card.
The most famous example of a one-card-kill is the hermit druid deck. However, the
following decks are harder to interact with and often faster. They combo with
Doomsday and Ad Nauseam.
Ad Nauseam gets the award for the most degenerate card in competitive
commander: with 40 starting life, typically under little immediate pressure, it often
lets you draw as many cards as you want. And with plenty of cheap or free artifact
mana, casting your spells after you draw them is rarely an issue.
Doomsday is one of the best ways to win in vintage. In EDH, where we have most
of the same broken artifact mana, and way too many game-winning piles to form for
each situation, it comes close to outshining it’s power in vintage.

ZUR DOOMSDAY
Zur Doomsday functions similarly to Jeleva storm, • Primer
except it comes with an incredibly powerful backup
plan: casting Zur and tutoring Necropotence.
However strong that is, don’t be fooled, Zur is a
backup plan: there are only 3 enchantments in this
entire list.

WASTE NOT COMBO


While the name-sake card isn’t quite a one-card- • Primer
combo in this list, it does do some of the most
degenerate things. This list is just as capable of
winning off an early ad nauseam as the other two
decks, but this one is much happier casting the
commander, Nekusar, the Mindrazer and wheeling
until the table is drained.

CHAPTER 6

GRAVEYARD STRATEGIES

Winning out of your graveyard might


be easier than winning out of your
hand.

Almost every competitive EDH deck ought to abuse the graveyard somehow.
Recursion like Eternal Witness, mechanics like delve, card advantage engines like
Crucible of Worlds, etc. Without the graveyard, you’re passing up on a great amount
of card advantage, speed and consistency you can’t otherwise get very easily.
Graveyard decks exemplify this idea. Playing reanimation spells, casting
creatures from their graveyard, milling themselves: these decks each take several
angles to get graveyard value.
The most obvious is reanimation. Making a big creature before you have the
mana to cast it can be game winning, especially if that creature if Iona, or Void
Winnower.
The second is consistency. Cards like Buried Alive and Entomb make decks
considerably more consistent. Buried alive is nearly a one-card combo and it one of
the most efficient ways to win. Entomb allows some incredibly broken plays to happen
far too consistently as well.

JARAD MIDRANGE
Jarad is a midrange deck with a reanimation • Primer
engine. This deck does a decent midrange
impression, but it wins with numerous combo kills.
The most common being Buried Alive into
Phyrexian Devourer, Triskellion, and Necrotic Ooze.

Karador slows down the game with hatebears, until • Primer

CHAPTER 9

CREATURE DECKS

Creatures may be dumb and slow, but


they’re fun and dumb and slow.

Unlike conventional wisdom, playing creatures in the most competitive EDH circles
does not mean you are playing a deck that wants to be attacking. Although attacking
with a bunch of creatures is a very strong plan B that most of these decks employ, each
of them are primarily looking to win with a fast combo too.
To make creatures worth the risks, the generals are very efficient: most of them
are a pretty strong source of card advantage, and they enable wins much faster than
attacking alone would.
Each commander is green too: mana acceleration is a key component to making
these decks fast enough to compete. Every deck in this list is playing 1-mana green
creature acceleration, such as Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves. Even though
conventional wisdom may tell you that these creatures are bad, they simply die to a
board wipe and leave no value behind, they are key to being fast enough to compete.

FOOD CHAIN PROSSH


Prossh ramps really hard. It ramps harder than any • Primer
other deck in this list. Then it proceeds to make a
ton of creatures, and deal a ton of damage with
them somehow.

Playing Prophet of Kruphix as your general seems • Primer
good to me. This is one of the strongest toolbox
generals there is, no doubt about it. This deck is
highly consistent. It’s perhaps the most competitive
toolbox deck in the format.

ANIMAR COMBO
The multiplayer version of animar is relatively • Primer
unexplored. Should the deck run more of the fast
combo cards from the single player version? Should
the deck go bigger, and combo only as an
afterthought? This deck is closer to the latter
option; despite that, it’s obviously one of the most
powerful things you can be doing.

No one is ever surprised to see an animar deck win. It’s fast, incredibly
redundant, and annoying to play against. Unlike the french deck, this deck relies on
draw engines to keep its hand full of action, where it can do a reasonable combo elf
impression, even with such a high curve.
Play animar if you love creatures, and love the feeling of an eldrazi cast-trigger
(many times a turn). If you like to plan out fairly complicated loops, this is the deck for
you.
Animar is not a deck that wins out of nowhere. Animar will get hated on more
than average because of this, even at competitive tables. Animar has a lot of triggers to
take, and also has very long turns.

EDRIC
Edric just wants to draw a bunch of cards. A huge, • Primer
overwhelmingly, staggeringly large number of
cards. Edric starts the game by playing flying men,
and then ends the game by chaining a few time
walks and playing a Beastmaster Ascension. Yes,
this is a multiplayer deck, and yes, it’s very good.

Play this deck if you enjoy making many difficult decisions. You may be tutoring
your deck three times a turn. Finding out which cards win the game, or when to not
use Yisan to find the right answers can all be incredibly rewarding. The decision trees
branch exponentially. This deck can also be a very good budget option: the best cards
aren’t that expensive, save Seedborn Muse, and Craterhoof Behemoth.
Don’t play this deck if you don’t like searching your deck or taking long turns
(Yisan takes long turns on each opponent’s turn too). To play at a reasonable pace, you
need to get in a lot of reps, plan out a lot of turns in advance, and get really good at
craterhoof behemoth math. Don’t play it if you play singleton to enjoy variety: you’ll
often tutor the same creatures each game. Don’t play Yisan if your meta is all board
wipes.

STAX

The best way to control the game is to


stop everyone from casting their spells

True control is EDH often feels like an uphill battle: against three or four other
players, having answers for all their threats is a crazy proposition. So being able to
proactively control what can be cast is a powerful thing. Enter stax.
Every deck relies on mana, every deck relies on having untapped lands. If you
can interupt that, you can control the entire game: no need to pick and choose which
big spells can resolve, none of them can be cast. No need to play politics, that’s
overrated.
When you can make stax effects lop-sided, you’re doing something very
powerful. However, these decks don’t want to stop at lop-sided. Brago wants you to
sacrifice all your permanents, and it has all the time in the world to assemble it’s
combo after it locks everyone out of the game.
However, you’re also often making yourself public enemy #1. Everyone has to
gang up on the stax player because no one can accomplish their game plan if they can’t
cast their spells.

If these are things you want to say to an
opponent, you may want to play Brago. Brago plays
a huge amount of mana rocks, ramping as hard as
any UW deck can. Then it happily uses the mana
those rocks make, while you untap one permanent
per turn.

ARTIFACT DECKS

Brown cards are the best cards.

Artifact decks run more combos than any other decks. Infinite mana combos, infinite
enter-the-battlefield combos, infinite card draw. These decks typically rely on an
abundance of combos since many of the pieces are so interchangeable. This makes it
hard to interact with the deck: so many of your cards are combo pieces, but which
ones will matter this game?
While Sharuum is the only deck listed, Nin and Hannah are both typically built
like this.

CONTROL DECKS

Control decks in EDH all have two things in common: they’re secretly combo decks,
and they can draw insane numbers of cards. Without both to some degree, they simply
fall short.
The ability to win quickly is absolutely essential: no one can answer every
game-winning combo indefinitely. Azami turns the corner with Mind Over Matter. Niv
Mizzet with Curiosity. If you are playing a control deck in a pod of fast and
uninteractive combo decks, it is up to you to have an answer to everything each
opponent is doing. This is a heavy burden, and only a few commanders are up to task.
Counterspells are the best answers in EDH: they’re cheap, they can stop almost
any combo, and they can slow down any opponent who is getting off to too fast a start.
Beyond these similarities, these decks play quite differently.

TASIGUR CONTROL
Tasigur relies on politics to approach his full • Primer
potential: it’s always in someone’s interest to give
you a counterspell out of your graveyard, especially
with a game winning spell on the stack. This infinite
snapcaster effect gives you exactly what you need to
keep answering threats. Avoiding commander tax is
nice too.
