El significado de BE ABLE TO (poder, ser capaz de) es similar al de CAN y se usa en los tiempos verbales en
que CAN no puede conjugarse.
CAN sólo puede conjugarse en Simple Present y Simple Past. Observa estos ejemplos con ambos tiempos verba-
les y su equivalencia con BE ABLE TO:
SIMPLE PRESENT
I can read in English = I am able to read in English
Puedo leer (Sé leer) en inglés.
SIMPLE PAST
En cambio, para los restantes tiempos verbales tienes que usar BE ABLE TO en reemplazo de CAN. No siendo BE
ABLE TO un auxiliar modal, puede usarse sin limitaciones con todos los tiempos verbales.

Finalmente, observa ahora los diferentes significados que tienen las formas negativas
de must y have to:
a) Usamos MUSTN’T para indicar que es importante no hacer algo, por ejemplo, por estar pro-
hibido:
You mustn’t tell Monica about this. (Don’t tell her)
No debes comentarle a Mónica acerca de esto. (No le comentes).
b) Usamos DON’T HAVE TO para indicar que no hay obligación de hacer algo, es decir, pue-
des hacerlo si lo deseas, pero no es necesario:
You don’t have to tell Lisa. (You can tell her if you want to, but it isn’t necessary)
No tienes que comentárselo a Lisa. (Puedes comentárselo si lo deseas, pero no es necesario).

Would
Notice that:
• Would is never conjugated. It is always would or ‘d (short form).
• The main verb is always the bare infinitive.
The main verb is always the bare infinitive. We cannot say:
I would to like coffee.
Be careful! Would and had have the same short form ‘d:
He’d finished. (He had finished.)
He’d like coffee. (He would like coffee.)

SHOULD / SHOULDN´T
Se utiliza para dar consejos. Se indica que algo es bueno y por lo tanto se debería hacer. Es una recomendación, no
una obligación. Tiene menos fuerza impositiva que “must” y que “have to”.
Anyone who wants to enter the conference should show his credentials
(Se trata realmente de una obligación -es obligatorio mostrar las credenciales para entrar en la conferencia-, pero
está expresada de forma poco coercitiva)
Construcción: este verbo modal va seguido del infinitivo del verbo principal sin la partícula “to”.
El pasado se utiliza para indicar algo que se debería haber hecho y no se hizo.

I am so thirsty. I should drink some water.

es un verbo modal que sólo puede usarse con tres alternativas de tiempos verbales:

Si está regido por preposición, ésta puede colocarse al final y omitirse o no el relativo:
the place (that) we went to, el lugar al que fuimos.
Jorge Essen, the well-known pianist whom everybody admires, will play here soon.
Jorge Essen, el conocido pianista a quien todos admiran, actuará aquí pronto.
The lessons which she liked better were those which she learned from others.
Las lecciones que más le gustaban eran aquellas que (las que) aprendía de otros.
