Welcome 3

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the 8th Annual Conference of the European Association of Israel Studies. I am honored and happy to
greet all delegates, participants and distinguished guests. We are privileged to be here at the Charles University
in Prague, which is one of the oldest (founded in 1348) but also one of the most recognised and progressively
developing University in Europe. The support, openness and hard work from our friends here in Prague made the
conference not only possible but also an outstanding academic event. I wish to thank, in particular, Dr. Marcela
Zoufala and Prof. Jiri Holy for their invaluable input in this conference organisation.
Each of our conferences reflects the process of widening and deepening the discipline of Israel studies in Europe.
Every year we observe new developments and we are glad to be part of it. One of the most important achievements,
which is being fulfilled by the conferences, is the formation of an environment of scholars studying contemporary
Israel within Europe, and the development of better connections between academic communities from Europe and
the other non-European countries. This is how the positive outcomes of these conferences are being multiplied, and
this is the direction in which we wish to continue. Finally, I would like to highlight how important it is to us to bring
together early-career scholars with well-established and leading academics. We are proud that the EAIS has its part
in the creation of this incredible shared space of mutual respect and readiness to address new intellectual challenges.
The EAIS is very lucky to have a dedicated and hard-working team of professional and enthusiastic people. Let me
express my deepest appreciation to the members of the Executive Committee. In particular, I would like to thank
Anna Godfrey, as it was her outstanding commitment which ensured the success of this conference. The Association
is also truly fortuned to be continuously and generously supported by Pears Foundation and the Israel Institute. No
doubt, the Association’s contribution to the development of Israel studies in Europe is only possible thanks to their
involvement.
Yet still, as Prof. Clive Jones highlighted in his welcoming address on the occasion of the opening the 4th Annual
Conference held at the University of Cagliari in 2015, “this remains your Association and how it can progress and
expand in the years to come is contingent on the commitment and enthusiasm that all here can today bring to the
study of Israel”. I would add only this is very true still in 2019.
Again, I welcome you all to Prague and on behalf of all Committee members of the EAIS, I wish you a productive and
enjoyable conference.
Joanna Dyduch
Chair of the EAIS

Dear Friends,
Let me warmly welcome you to the oldest University in Central Europe, founded in 1348 by the King of Bohemia and
Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in a document dated 7th April 1348 which made us the first institution of higher
education north of the Alps and east of Paris.
Charles University has been steadfastly and over the long-term developing scientific cooperation and participating
in European and world-wide projects. It is also cooperating extensively with universities and research institutions in
Israel. At present we are enjoying very intensive cooperation with Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem.
I am glad that the trend for increasing Israel Studies which we have established at Charles University is very popular,
and we are extending teaching and research on this important part of the Middle East.
I am very pleased that the delegates of the 8th Annual Conference of the European Association of Israel Studies
2019 are meeting here. I wish all participants at the 8th Annual Conference of the European Association of Israel
Studies 2019 a successful conference and I hope that they will acquire a wealth of knowledge, new contacts, good
impressions and make new friends during their stay in Prague and at Charles University.
Prof. Tomáš Zima
Rector, Charles University

Israel Week at Charles University
The Future of Israel Studies in the Czech Republic

Monday, 9 – Friday, 13 September 2019

Charles University is proud to host the 5th “Israel Week at Charles

serves as a starting point for future research and teaching activities
in the field of Israel Studies at Charles University.
The complete program will be published separately. The 5th “Israel
Week at Charles University” is supported by the Embassy of the
State of Israel in the Czech Republic.
The 5th Israel Week and EAIS 8th annual conference will be held
under the kind auspices of:
Rector of the Charles University, prof. MUDr. Tomas Zima, DrSc.,
MBA
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, doc. PhDr. Michal

The Herzl Center for Israel Studies

8 Annual Conference on Israel Studies

The Herzl Center for Israel Studies (HCIS) was founded in

cooperation with the Israel Institute in Washington, DC, in 2018 and
is now an integral part of Charles University in Prague, the Czech
Republic. The HCIS is an interdisciplinary research and teaching
institution dedicated to the enhancement of knowledge and
awareness about the modern State of Israel. The HCIS is the first
academic center in the Czech Republic fully dedicated to the study
of Israeli society, politics, and history. To contribute to the expanding
field of Israel Studies, the HCIS especially focuses on the study
of historical and contemporary links between Central Europe and
Israel.
