Activity 1.1.3 Job Application

A. Watch the video “How to Fill Out a Job Application”. Then, fill in the blanks with the word(s) orVideo 1
phrases from the box.
address - available - college - degrees - employers - employment - filling out - name
phone number - job application form - position - write down - résumé - salary - references
How to Fill Out a Job Application Form
Hi, I’m Taylor of About.com and today I’ll be showing you how to complete a 1job application,
any additional materials you may need and some tips on how to use proper handwriting. I’ll be using the
instructions from www.About.com’s job application site.
It’s very important that your application is correct, accurate and complete. Since you’re going to
be asked about your previous education and 2emplotment history, take the time to find out any names,
addresses, phone numbers, and dates of employment before 3filling out the application. Have at least
three 4references available. Make sure you have their permission before using them as a reference.
These people can be teachers, members of an organization you volunteered for, or previous employers.
Don’t use family members though.
Using blue or black ink, fill up your personal information like your 5name 6address and 7phone
number. When writing, leave enough space between each letter, so the words are easily legible. Be
conscious of how much space you are given, so don’t write too big or too small.
In the Education section, write down the most recent year of education first, include vocational
school and training programs, as well as 8college and high school. Write down your major along with
9
degree or diplomas and the graduation dates.
When filling out the 10position applied for information, write down the title of the job you’re
applying for. Fill out the hours and days you’re 11available to work. Keep in mind these are the hours
you’re available not already committed to, to things such as school, extra-curricular activities, or another
job.
Using the information you gathered previously, fill out the employment history section, include
names, addresses, and phone numbers of previous 12employers, supervisor names, dates of
employment, and 13salary. If there was a reason you left or were asked to leave, include that, too. Be
honest, that’s what they’re looking for. 14write down the information required for your references; this
is typically their name, address, and phone number. Before turning it in, proofread for spelling and
grammatical errors. Make sure all information is correct and sign your application. And don’t forget to
attach your 15résumé if it was requested.

Activity 1.3.3 Life Changes

A. Read the following text and complete it with the options below.

A 90s Kid Living in 2014: Then and Now

Nikki Luongo, 2014

We grew up in a world where something was cool for about 10 minutes then it was over. What used to
have longevity and last for weeks is over before it even begins.

I feel lucky because I got to see both sides of the spectrum — the world before the technology invasion
and the world after. But kids are so different now, everything is centered around their electronic devices.

Here are some changes:

Now: Renting a movie through Netflix without having to
leave the room.
Then: I used to get up, go outside and go to Blockbuster
where 1I rented movies for five bucks and then return
them.
Now: People can download 2music directly into their iPods.
Then: I used to line up outside of a store to be the first
person to get the new album.

Now: We can pick and choose what internet programs we want and Wi-Fi is everywhere.
Then: I used to connect the computer to the cable modem. 39

Now: Kids today don’t want to sit through a 90 minutes cartoon that doesn’t involve
some Zombie, Vampire or Bratz Doll.
Then: On Saturday mornings, I used to watch “Looney Tunes” cartoons from Bucks
3
6 am to noon. =
Now: The new generation isn’t interested in going outside and playing without some Dollars
sort of devices attached to their hands.
Then: I used to play 4all sorts of games using my imagination. With my friends, we made forts, rode our
bikes, etc. Ferris Bueller said it best. “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around, you
might miss something.”

D. First read the text and complete the spaces with one of the options below. Compare your
answers.

Modern Technology
a. Modern technology is changing the way we live our lives. Clever gadgets make everyday activities
easier and enable people to use their time effectively. But what impact will this change have in the
future and is it really a positive thing? People are busier than ever before.
Technological advances mean that things are often possible with the touch of a button. A hundred years
ago, however, things were very different. Everyday jobs, like doing the laundry, would take a whole day,
and the telephone was a new invention! Nowadays, almost every household has a washing machine and
a dishwasher, and there are more than 70 million mobile phones in use in the United Kingdom
alone.

b. Research shows that around 28% of children in the UK are overweight or obese. Some people are
concerned that this is because young people spend too much time online and not enough time
socializing with their friends and playing outside. In the past, nearly all children walked to school because
their parents didn’t have a car. They didn’t have all the luxuries that many children have now, so they
used their imagination and played outdoors in the fresh air.

c. Years ago, when people wanted to stay in touch with their friends and family, they wrote letters.
These days, however, E-mail communication and social networking sites, such as Facebook, allow
instant, free international communication.

d. Online banking and shopping make essential activities possible from the comfort of our own
homes. But what effect will this have on town centers and shops? In some towns and cities, many shops
are now empty, and a lot of people think this is because more and more people choose to use the
Internet for shopping.

e. There are many benefits of using technology but we need to be responsible in the choices we make.
Modern equipment is often very expensive and does not last a long time. It is important to consider
how much we really need these things and the impact they have on our health, the environment and
society.

Complete the paragraphs with one of these phrases. E. Read the text again. What’s the main idea of each
1 enable people to use their time effectively paragraph? Choose one of the option for each paragraph
and write the letter on the line.
2 28% of children in the UK are overweight

Activity 2.3.7 Reading

A. Which relative pronouns fit best? Choose the best option.

The Detective Novel

For over a hundred years detective stories have been one of the most popular forms of writing.

The book (that/who) 1 they appear in is often called “whodunits”. In many cases. The detectives in

these novels are professional police officers. A typical example is Inspector Tom, the famous British

detective (who/which) 2 was created by the writer James Smith.

But many of these characters are private detectives (who/which) 3 help the clients (which/who) 4 they

work for. Perhaps the best-known is Karl White. A private detective was invented by the author Richard

Collins in a novel (which/who) 5 he wrote in 1930.

Of course, not all detectives in fiction are professionals, many are amateurs. One of the most famous of

these is Miss Stevens, a character that Lilian Jones invented in 1925.

In more recent years, scientists and psychologists have taken over the role of detectives in popular

fiction. This is due to the increasingly important role (which/who) 6 science plays in modern police

work. One of the best-known of, these ‘detectives’ is Dr. Kelly Clark the invention of American crime

writer Richard Lewis. Lewis introduced Clark to the world in Postmortem, a book (which/who) 7 she

published in 1990.

B. Answer the following questions by choosing the correct answer.

1. What is the correct written form of “whodunits”?

The Experience of a Life Time!

I studied engineering at the UASLP. When I graduated, I decided to learn a foreign language. ____F______1because I heard
many people around the world speak English, so I thought it would be useful.
A friend who was a student at Cambridge University recommended that I study English there. An important part of the
course involved studying abroad. Well, at first, I didn’t really know which country to go to, but one day _____C_____2. It
looked like a great place to visit, so that’s where I went!
When I got to Cambridge, I was nervous because it was my first time abroad on my own. However, everyone at the college
was really friendly and welcoming.
On weekends, they took me and the other new students to visit a lot of fun places. They also organized activities so we
could meet the local people. Our English teacher was really good, too. I was only there three months, but I learned a lot.
Afterwards, I went back to Mexico and immediately started investigating other study abroad options. This
time_______A________3 After one month in Montreal, I moved to Toronto. I really enjoyed my time in both places, and
felt my English improved a lot. In Montreal, I stayed with a host family as it was more economical. I worked part-time in a
restaurant and saved some money, so when I moved to Toronto, my budget was bigger and I rented an apartment. My four
months there were the best of all. We spoke English all the time in class! I found it very hard at first and sometimes got
annoyed because I couldn’t understand everything. However, it was a very effective way to learn and actually, by the time I
left, I was fluent. That’s why, when I graduated a year later from the UASLP with a degree in Engineering Management, I
found a job in the U.S.A. I started working for a manufacturing company in Detroit. Nowadays, I can’t believe how lucky I
am._______E________4, and I really enjoy my job. What’s more, shortly after settling here, I met an American girl named
Emily. Six months ago, we got married!
For me, studying abroad_______H_______5 and become friends with people from all over the world. It gave me some
fantastic insights into different cultures. But it also gave me a great job, a wife… in fact, a whole new life. I’d recommend
the experience to everyone. Go on, give it a try!
E. Read again. Number these events in John’s life in the correct order (1-9).

4. Read the following text and decide if the sentences are TRUE or FALSE. Check the correct
column.

The Circus

The Rodriguez Brothers Circus is in town! Every year, the circus arrives and stays for a week. Then they go to
the next town.
There are not many animals in the circus. People told the circus that they didn’t like seeing animals
performing. There is an elephant called Jacob and two old lions, Hattie and Meg.

Most of the performers are human! There is Leopold, the strongest man in the world. His father also worked
in the circus, but Leopold is stronger than him, he has bigger arms and bigger legs too! Leopold performs his
act every night for the town’s people who come to watch.

Another performer is Clara. She says she has the longest hair in the world. It’s about 4 meters long! She also
has a daughter who works in the circus. Her name is Sue-Ellen. Her hair is a lot shorter, but she wants to
grow it as long as her mother’s. Sue-Ellen helps look after the animals and she’s also learning how to juggle.

The highlight of the circus are the three clowns, Pit, Pot and Pat. They all wear long red shoes, but Pat’s
shoes are the longest and sometimes, he falls over because they’re so long! They perform for about twenty
minutes and they are always the most popular act with the audience, especially with children. Many people
think Pit, Pot and Pat are three brothers, but Pat is older than the other two - he’s their father! He’s the
oldest clown in the country, but he has a lot of energy.

Tomorrow will be the longest day because the circus is leaving town and everything must be packed away
into big trucks.
TRUE FALSE

1. The circus comes to the town twice a year.

2. Leopold’s father is the strongest man in the world.

3. Clara’s hair is longer than her daughter’s hair.

4. Sue-Ellen want to be a clown in the circus.

5. Pit is the father of the other two clowns.

6. The three clowns wear identical shoes.
