Mass Media
When you want to listen to your favorite song, watch your favorite show,
or see the latest current events, what do you do? You more than likely turn on your
television, radio, or computer. What we use to stay informed 1 _d_.
Mass media means technology that is intended to reach a mass audience.
2
It _f_ used to reach the general public. The most common platforms for mass
media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the Internet. People rely (12)
on mass media to obtain any kind of information.
3
Mass media _h_. Have you ever wondered how people kept up-to-date in the past? Well,
before there was the Internet, television, or the radio, there was 4 _a_. It was the original platform for
mass media. For a long period of time, the general public trusted writers and journalists from the local
newspapers to provide them with the latest news in current events.
Centuries later, in the 1890s, the radio would soon replace the newspaper as the most
trustworthy source for mass media. Families would gather around it to listen to their favorite radio
station programs and to hear the latest news regarding politics, social issues, and entertainment.
Several years later came the invention of television. This device would soon take the place of
the radio as the most effective platform to reach the general public. People could be informed through
the news as well as entertained by watching different kinds of programs such as soap operas, sitcoms,
talk shows and TV series. Today, 5 _e_ is the most relevant form of mass media and has become a
major tool for different ways to access news outlets. Since the evolution of the Internet, the general
public is now able to access those same news outlets in an instant with just a click of a mouse, instead
of having to wait for scheduled programs.

Over the centuries, newspapers 2___d___. The biggest change was printing them on paper and the use

a boom in the newspaper industry where several different names started to appear in major cities,
publishing morning, afternoon and evening editions. News, weather, sports and other features were
given to readers to inform and entertain them.
However, newspaper costs continued to rise, and the number of subscribers began to fall, as

The paper, as an information source, started to be replaced by other media such as radio,

Children and Smartphones

Because now the new school year has started, our day-to-day
lifestyle has just intensified in every possible area.

Since we all have many things to do throughout the week, one thing that
does help me breathe a lot easier is knowing we can stay connected and

kids all have cell phones, I do have peace of mind when they are out and about attending sporting
events, after-school commitments and their part time jobs. On the other hand, this same piece of
technology that allows us to stay in touch while we are apart also has a downside because they can be
distracting and at times addicting. And it’s not just kids, we parents can be just as distracted with our
smart phones as our kids.

D. Read the following text. Write T for True or F for False.

Natural Disasters
When something is natural, it comes from nature and it is not manmade. A disaster is
something that usually causes major problems. It would be a disaster if a bridge suddenly fell because
it was not built properly. Disasters are negative but can be manmade. However, when speaking
about natural disasters you can combine the two terms and define them as catastrophes that occur in
nature or by natural processes. They are not manmade. A natural disaster takes place in populated
areas of the world when lives may be lost, the property is severely damaged, and the economy is
negatively affected.
Natural disasters may include an asteroid collision with Earth, avalanche, landslide, blizzard,
thunderstorm, earthquake, flood, gamma-ray burst (from space), volcano, heat wave, hurricane, solar
flare, drought, tornado, tsunami, hail, and wildfire.
It is not a natural disaster if it occurs in an unpopulated area and there is no loss of life or
property damage. For example, if a tsunami took place on an uninhabited island, it would not be a
disaster. Disasters cause a loss. There are many things that can happen during a natural disaster.
Sometimes, more than one disaster occurs at the same time. Landslides may occur during severe
flooding and thunderstorms.
The most common types of natural disasters in the world are floods and storms.
All natural disasters cause damage and destruction, and often one or more people die due to
the effects of the natural disaster. Many of the disasters can be predicted ahead of time with some
warnings given for people to prepare and move to safety.

1. A natural disaster is not manmade. T

2. A tsunami taking place on a deserted island is a natural F
disaster.
3. Earthquakes, floods and drought are examples of natural T
disasters.
4. Landslides and storms are the most common natural disasters. F

Writing a Résumé
A Résumé is an outline (description of the main facts) of a person’s educational and
professional background. In some countries, like the UK, it is known as a CV. 1__K__, but
remember the following two principles:
§ Make it clear. Use direct, simple language, short headings and highlight the important
things like the titles of previous jobs.
§ Make it short, no more than two sides of a sheet of paper. 2__C__
Standard résumés are usually divided into a maximum of seven sections. One of the
most common ways to order the sections is like this:

CUADERNO DE TRABAJO| INGLÉS 5

1. Personal details. These are facts about you and how to contact you. The section
should include your name, address, date of birth 3___I___, and nationality. Some people
attach a passport size photo, which can help catch an employer’s interest. This is
especially common in the USA and is becoming normal practice in many international or
sales-oriented business. 4__B__ so that employers can decide straight away if they like
the sound of the candidate or not.
2. Education. This should outline your educational background and your qualifications.
There’s no need to give details about primary or elementary school! If you left school
some years ago and have done company or professional training courses, it may be more
important to highlight these. 5___G____
3. Employment. This should include different jobs you have done. 6___M____ You should
list the main duties of each job as it may not be clear from the job title.
4. Skills. 7___A____, like computer skills or speaking another language.
5. 8___L____ These include sporting and leisure interests. Avoid obvious ones that most
people share like reading and watching TV.
6. Personal Profile. This section describes the kind of person you are and is usually
written in complete sentences. 9___E____ Don’t be modest and use phrases like ‘fairly good’
or ‘usually hard-working’. Other applicants will write the best descriptions that they can,
so you must too!
7. References. You should include two people who would be able to provide a reference.
One should be your last employer, if possible. 10___H____

D. Insert the following phrases to the text above. There are five extra sentences you are not
going to use.

A. Here you should list any other skills that employers might be interested in
B. The advantage of this is that the jobseeker’s achievements and qualities are presented right at
the start
C. A busy human resources manager with 20 résumés to read in half an hour won’t want to read
anything longer.
D. Other skills.
E. Try writing down ten words or phrases which describe your good points and then putting them
into a paragraph.
F. Don’t ask your references for their permission.
G. In this case, you can call this section ‘Education and training’.
H. Make sure you ask their permission first.
I. (not age, as this will have to be changed every year),
J. Holidays
K. There is no one correct way to construct a résumé,
L. Interests and hobbies.
M. Start with the most recent as this is usually the one where you had the most responsibility.

Lesson 30

Activity 3.2.2 The Toughest Question

A. Read the text and write the correct heading for each paragraph.

1. Talking about responsibilities 2. Qualifications 3. Résumé 4. Work experience

a. ___Work experience___
It is by far the most important part of any job interview in an English-speaking country. It is true
that education is also important, however, most employers are more impressed by extensive work
experience than by university degrees. Employers want to know exactly what you did and how well
you accomplished your tasks. This is the part of the interview during which you can make the best
impression. It's important to give full, detailed answers. Be confident and emphasize your
accomplishments in past positions.

b. ___Qualifications___
These include any education from high school through university, as well as any special training you
may have had (such as computer courses). Make sure to mention your English studies. This is very
important as English is not your first language and the employer may be concerned about this fact.
Assure the interviewer that you are continuing to improve your English skills by any courses you
may be taking, or by saying that you study a certain number of hours a week to improve your skills.

c. ___Talking about responsibilities___

Most importantly, you will need to demonstrate your qualifications and skills which are directly
applicable to the job you are applying for.

If past job skills were not exactly the same as what you will need on the new job, make sure to detail
how they are similar to job skills you will need for the new position.
