EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Study of Quality Control in Knitted Garment Industry 1

INTRODUCTION

As everybody knows, the textile industry is one of the best trades in

the world. Especially the business of manufacturing and exporting knitted

garments is very much interesting.

The knit garments can be made in light weight, at the same time,

with more thickness fabrics for winter seasons. For the summer seasons,

they can be made in lighter weight with less thickness fabrics. Also there

is a huge number of fabric varieties can be made in knits. The specialty of

knit garments is the elasticity. Because of these special and comfort

qualities, the requirement for knit garments is huge and forever. Hence

manufacturing and exporting knit garments is definitely a life long

profitable business.

At the same time, there is a huge competition among the exporters

around the world. Nowadays, most of the overseas buyers and importers

prefer to do business with the suppliers

1. Who are having their own manufacturing factories with huge

production capacity.

2. Who are quality conscious.

3. Who are able to make prompt shipment in right time with right

quality.

4. Who are adopting local labor laws and code of conduct.

5. Who are having thorough knowledge about the business.

6. Who are reliable.

7. Who are having sound financial strength.

8. Who are able to supply the garments on competitive prices.

OBJECTIVE

Quality is a reflection of customer’s opinion on the value that has

been seen in the product compared to that of other competitor. Let’s look

at some of the factors that influence customer’s perception of quality. The

factors are:

Price: Customers tend to associate quality with higher price. There

is some evidence that price is used by shoppers in quality estimates and

that for some products consumers estimates of quality are affected by

price.

Technology: This indicates factors such as fabric seam strength,

colour fastness, shrinkage and other properties that are affected by the

state of technology in the industry.

Psychology: A garment can be reasonably priced and the best

that technology can offer, but if it is not attractive in appearance, if it is not

fashionable, if it does not meet the aesthetic requirements of customers,

then it is not a quality garment.

Time orientation: This indicates durability. Of course, the

importance of durability varies with categories of garments, i.e. children’s

garments are expected to be more durable that ladies high fashion

garments.

Contractual: This refers to a product guarantee, the refund policy

of a store, and so on.

Ethical: This refers to honesty of advertising, courtesy of sales

personnel and so on.

If any one or more of the preceding factors can be influenced

positively, then there will be increase in the quality of the product in a

customer’s mind and he or she will most likely come back to buy from the

manufacturer again.

So this is the study report based on the practical data collected

from a garment industry to achieve leadership in the garment exports by

making quality garments to consumer's expectation and satisfaction

through enhancement of product standards timely delivery.

METHODOLOGY

Study of Quality Control in Knitted Garment Industry 4

Quality means different things to different people, depending on

their perception of the value of a product under consideration and their

expectations of performance and durability of that product. Webster’s

defines quality as essential nature; a trait, characteristic; superiority,

relatively considered.

The American society for Quality control (ASQC) defines quality as

a systematic approach to the search for excellence. Sudit Industries Ltd is

a composite unit which produces fabric and then constructs a garment as

per the buyer’s requirement. Following are some of the unique features of

SIL’s collection:

 Made up of finest quality fabrics

 Mesmerizing colors and attractive designs

 Available in various sizes and patterns

 Excellent stitch

 Color fastness

 Tear strength

 Shrinkage free

Apart from this, we would be discussing the complete line of fabric

production to garment manufacturing and its dispatch level. At every

quality junction what are the different tests are conducted and what can

be suggested for improving the quality of the product time to time.

Research Methodology

Research in common parlance refers to a search for knowledge.

One can also define research as a scientific and systematic search for

pertinent information on a specific topic. Research is an academic activity

as such the term should be used in a technical sense. Research refers to:

 Defining and redefining problem.

 Formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions.

 Collecting, organizing and evaluating data.

 Making deductions and reaching conclusions.

 At last carefully testing the conclusions to determine,

whether they fit the formulating hypothesis.

Research process consists of series of action or steps necessary

to effectively carry out research. These steps are to be followed in the

same sequence. These steps are as follows:

 Specifying research objective

 Preparing a list of needed information

 Designing the data collection project

 Select a sample size

 Organizing and carrying data and reporting the findings.

Sources of Data

The sources of data means from where we have to get data. There

are mainly two sources of data. These are:

Primary Data:

Depending upon the nature of the problem, primary data can be

collected through various methods. In this study, personal interviews with

senior officials of different departments of corporate office, with SUDIT

INDUSTRIES LIMITED and various members of all departments of the

company.

Secondary Data:

The secondary data are those data which have already been

collected by someone else and which have already been passed through

statistics process. I got published data as maintained by company like

company manuals, annual reports balance sheets etc.

Data collected through websites also. This report encompasses-

charts, diagrams and onsite pictures as well.

ANALYSIS

SIL has a team of Pattern masters and industry experts in Printing,

Dyeing, Sewing and Finishing sections. These people developed a lot of

samples for the buyers year round. New developments, Order Size Sets

and Advertisement samples are developed regularly.

The project entitled “Study of Quality Control in Knitted Garment

Industry” is conducted at Sudit industries Ltd. The term of study was kept

limited to make the title true. The purpose of the report is to get the in

depth understanding of the process of working quality management.

With the growing Indian economy and the government policies for

infrastructure the demand for garments is increasing and seeing this as

an opportunity is under taking many new projects for expansion of the

production which are under implementation for increasing the capacity of

the plants. Because the textile industry is a sun rising company which

means that three basic needs of the people are cloth, meal and house. So

the one of thing that is cloth produced in textile industry. So, it is sun rising

company.

New developments are based on Buyer inputs, Trend inputs and

also innovative techniques from garments industry are developed by the

SIL team.

Order Samples like Style and Fit Approvals, size set approvals and

Production Samples are prepared by this team. If a buyer wishes to check

a trial sale of certain designs, short quantities are immediately developed

and dispatched in short notice.

For quick response, SIL has installed separate sample sections in

each of the supplier unit with qualified team. When Buyers select a

Vendor, SIL will get new development sketches from the buyer and

develops them in that supplier sample section. This will help the buyer to

decide the order processing capacities and quality of that Supplier. The

Supplier also provides a clear pricing and acceptance of the order thus

ensuring both party satisfactions resulting in a perfect shipment. After

order, the supplier sample section quickly develops style and fit samples,

gets sample fabrics in exact shades and prepare size set quantity,

production and advertisement samples as required by the buyers.

CONCLUSION

Study of Quality Control in Knitted Garment Industry 9

The company continues to register significant improvement in the

performance and gradually the company has turned to become a profit

making organization. This has also been reflected in the annual accounts

since last 5 years. Further the Company’s Garment unit is anticipated that

Garment exports would grow more. In view of all this company is

anticipating further remarkable improvement in the performance in future.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Quality cannot be achieved on the Inspection table. It should be

produced right from the beginning, which is choosing of raw material,

planning of time frame for an operation and teaching the requirement to

the workers. Quality is achieved with strong technical quality team.

Quality is achieved by monitoring the manufacturing process, from

sourcing the right supplier through final delivery of finished product.

This project is the detailed study of the processes conducted in an

Industry where the job starts from fabric manufacturing to garment

manufacturing. The Tests in knitted fabrics, garments and accessories are

conducted as per customers requirement, at reputed laboratory like SGS,

ITS.
