Chapter -6 (Work Energy and Power)
1. Develop the notations of work and kinetic energy and show that it leads to work-energy
theorem.
2. What are collisions? Explain the possible types of collisions? Develop the theory of one-
dimensional elastic collision.
3. State and prove law of conservation of energy in case of a freely falling body.

PROBLEMS

1. A machine gun fires 360 bullets per minute and each bullet travels with a velocity of
600 ms-1 if the mass of each bullet is 5gm, find the power of the machine - gun.
2. A pump is required to lift 600 kg of water required to per minute from a well of 25 m
deep and to eject it with speed of 50 ms-1. calculate the power required to
perform the above task. (g=10 ms-2 )

Chapter – 8 (Oscillations)
1. Define simple harmonic motion. Show that the motion of projection of a part performing
uniform circular motion, on any diameter is simple harmonic.
2. Show that the motion of a simple pendulum is simple harmonic and hence derive an equation
for its time period. What is seconds pendulum? what is the length of seconds pendulum?
3. Derive the equation for the kinetic energy and potential energy of a simple harmonic oscillator
and show that the total energy of a particle in simple harmonic motion is constant at any point
on its path.

1. What is the length of a simple pendulum, which ticks seconds?


2. A particle executes SHM such that, the maximum velocity during the oscillation is numerically
equal to half the maximum acceleration. What is the time period?
3. A particle executing SHM has amplitude or 4 centimetres, and its acceleration let distance of 1
centimetre from the mean position is 2 cm s-2. What will its velocity be, when it is at a distance
of 2 cm from its mean position?
4. A clock regulated by the seconds pendulum keeps correct time. during summer the length of
the pendulum increases to 1.02 metre. How much will the Clock gain or lose in one day?

Chapter -3 (Motion in a Straight line)
1. Obtain equations of motion for constant acceleration using method of calculus.
2. Show that the maximum height reached by a projectile launched at an angle of 45o is one
quarter of its range.
3. A ball thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 20 ms-1 per second from the top of
multi storey building. The height of a point of the point from where the ball is thrown as
25-0 metres from the ground. a) how high will the ball rise? and b) how long will it be
before the ball hits the ground? Take g = 10 ms-1 (actual value is 9.8 ms-1).
4. A man walks on straight road from home to a market 2.5 km away with a speed of 5 km h -
1. Finding the market closed, he instantly turns and walks back home with a speed of 7.5

km h-1. What is the a) magnitude of average velocity and b) average speed of the man over
the time interval 0 to 50 min.?
5. A car travels the first third of a distance with a speed of 10 kmph, the second third at 20
kmph and the last third at 60 kmph. What is its mean speed over the entire distance?
6. A bullet moving with a speed of 150 ms-1 strikes a tree and penetrates 3.5 cm before
stopping. What is the magnitude of its retardation in the tree and the time taken for it to
stop after striking the tree?
7. A food packet is dropped from a aeroplane, moving with a speed of 360 kmph in a
horizontal direction, from a height of 500 m. Find i) its time of descent ii) the horizontal
distance between the point at which the food packet reaches the ground and the point
above which it was dropped.
8. A stone is dropped from a height 300m and at the same time another stone projected
vertically upwards with a velocity of 100 m/s. Find when and where the two stones meet.
9. A bird holds a fruit in its beak and flies parallel to the ground. It lets go of the fruit at some
height. Describe the trajectory of the fruit as it falls to the ground as seen by a) the bird b) a
person on the ground.
10. A ball is dropped from the roof of a tall building and simultaneously another ball is
thrown horizontally with some velocity from the same roof. Which balls lands first?
Explain your answer.

1. State parallelogram law of vectors. Derive an expression for the magnitude and direction of
the resultant vector.
