BSAMT – 1A Purposive Communication

Maxims of Communication
1. The maxim of quantity – where one tries to be as informative as one possibly can and
give as much information as is needed, and no more.

2. The maxim of quality – where one tries to be truthful, and does not give information that
is false or that is not supported by evidence.

3. The maxim of relation – where one tries to be relevant, and says things that are pertinent
to the discussion.

4. The maxim of manner – when one tries to be as clear, as brief, and as orderly as one
can in what one says, and where one avoids obscurity and ambiguity.

Functions of Communication
1. Informative – communication can be used for giving and getting information. Giving
information usually comes in the form of statements of facts.

2. Persuasive – its sole purpose is to get the listener to support and transform their thinking
in favor of the presenter or speaker’s perspective. It is about creating and attitude change
to influence social behavior.

3. Argumentative – deals with defending actions, beliefs, or opinions. Argumentative

communication seeks to enlighten reasons and make them explicit and open to scrutiny
and solve problems or make judgements.

4. Narrative – a way of communication through telling stories or narratives. It provides an

experience that people can understand and relate. It is one way, as in a speaker
addressing an audience.

5. Descriptive – provides information about how something or someone looks, sounds, feels
etc.

Speech delivery and Public speaking

1. Local – speech delivery and public speaking in a local area usually addresses issues,
topics, and other social affairs in that local area. The method of communication used can
be the local language and the universal language which is English.

2. Global – speech delivery and public speaking globally can be more complex than in local.
Preparing for a talk in a larger scale has more things to consider such as cultures, foreign
languages, the current status of certain nations, etc. When giving a speech delivery and
public speaking in a global manner, it is important to use a language that everyone can
understand which is the English language.
