The UN at war: Examining the consequences of peace-enforcement mandates for the

UN peacekeeping operations in the CAR, the DRC, and Mali

1. The three (3) things that I significantly learned from the readings are…
 The United Nations or UN has a wide distributed forces in the world but these
peacekeeping movements of UN was not that efficient because they have
done nothing on some circumstances in which they should function in order
to protect civilians. I now think that when it comes to their values, goals,
and purposes, these forces are not that reliable as they must be.
 I have learned that nowadays there are up to date peacekeeping
operations developing. New provisions and regulations for CAR, DRC, and
Mali are directed towards the sustainability with such significant rate of
powerful need for force. Based on the article, there are new devices,
innovations, skills, and resources entered the UN operations, in December
2013 there were aerial surveillance drones that was activated in the Eastern
DRC.
 I have learned that the United Nations improves and motivates nations and
countries on having a healthy partnership with one another, however other
nations didn’t agreed with these since there were circumstances that those
UN forces are using so much strength or force in order to develop harmony
and peace.
2. The three (3) things that are still unclear to me are…
 None. I understand the whole idea of the article. The author explained it
clearly and he showed what’s his justification regarding to the United
Nations’ forces and the newly developing up to date peacekeeping
operations.
3. I used to think that…
 United nations is just an organization that helps the countries on
maintaining peace and security but after reading the article I now think or
realize that UN doesn’t only maintains peace but they have many things to
do such as promoting development throughout the world. Also, they
prevent war in order to maintain the world at peace. The United Nations
had many contributions to the Philippines just like when it comes to peace
and security, during the disputation between Philippines and China for the
West Philippine Sea, at the request of the country, the arbitral tribunal
affirmed with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which
provides for an effcetive right on using the seas within 200 nautical miles in
a way that it considers to be appropriate.
4. Three (3) questions I want to ask about the readings are…
 How does the United Nations continue on supporting international peace
and security?
 What is the purpose of the United Nations determination when it comes to
peace and security?
 What can the United Nations do to stop the conflict between the
Philippines and China when it comes to the West Philippine Sea (South
China Sea)?

Crossing Borders: Development, Learning, and the North-South Divide

1. The three (3) things that I significantly learned from the readings are…
 I have learned that globalization further divides the North-South because
of unequal perception between the North and the South. It is said that the
Northern Countries, are more powerful, wealthier, better standard of living
and they are well-developed unlike the Southern countries which are said
to be weaker, marginalized, poverty-stricken, low income earning, poor
standard of living and they are the less developed countries. Also, it is not
just the poverty and poor low income earning the third world want to break
off and escape but also to take the opportunities the first world countries
gives off.
 I have learned that first world’s priority is for their own sake not to other
countries. Even the government itself forces the third world countries of
Africa, Asia, and Latin America to take a scarce menial job. However, even
capitalist world or the first world are developing countries, it does not mean
they are corrupt-free.
 I have learned that the conceptualization of learning of both sides are at
once ethical and indirect. It is ethical because it transcends a liberal
integration of knowledge, and indirect because it transcends a rationalist
tendency to limit learning to direct knowledge transfer between places
perceived as ‘similar’.
2. The three (3) things that are still unclear to me are…
 None. The article was easy to understand and delivered clearly. I also
understand what does the article pertaining to regarding how the Northern
countries and Southern countries divide.
3. I used to think that…
 Global economy achieves equality in every country. I thought that an
advance world or the first world countries such as North America, Western
Europe, Japan, and Australia will help those third world or the developing
countries and will not abuse their power. I never thought that there is a law
imposed with ingenious loopholes.
4. Three (3) questions I want to ask about the readings are…
 Why is the the Northern countries are more developed and progressive
than Southern countries?
 Why poor countries are mostly found on the south side and the rich
countries on the north side?
 How does Global North help the Global South? Are they still relying on one
another’s support?
