Report of various ‘Tunnel Engineering’ activities at

MIT World Peace University Pune


MIT World Peace University Pune has joined ITA CET Committee as a member recently.
After that following activities were organized for our M.tech. (Tunnel Engineering )
students.
Activities of M.Tech. (Tunnel Engineering) students
1) Site Visit No.1-- M.Tech.(Tunnel Engg.) students visited the Maha Metro (Pune
metro), Swargate station site on 22 of October 2018. The works of piling, cage
fabrication, excavation, waterproofing for shaft were in progress.

2) Site Visit No.2 -- M.Tech.(Tunnel Engg.) students visited The MMRC, Mumbai
metro package -3, (Colaba to Seepz via Bandra) on 13th of December 2018.
Construction of underground shaft and tunnelling work for Metro Station was in
progress. This project will be completed before June 2021.
3) Lectures of experts from Industry :
Lectures of Mr. Senthilnath, Senior Engineer (Tunnels), Geoconsult Asia Singapore
Pte. Ltd., Singapore on various aspects of tunnelling were organised for our students
on 17th to 18th December 2018.

4) Tunnelling Asia 2019 Conference on 27-28 February 2019 at Mumbai

Prof. Sandeep Potnis, Coordinator, Tunnel Engineering Program and students


attended Tunnelling Asia 2019 Conference organized by Tunnelling Association of
India, on 27-28 February 2019 at Mumbai. This biennial conference was organized
under the aegis of International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association
(ITA).

Theme of this conference was ‘Underground Facilities for Better Environment and
Safety: Issues and Challenges’. About 300 professionals from various countries such
as Austria, Brazil, Singapore, Hongkong, China, Germany, Malaysia and India
participated in this mega event.

Prof. Tarcisio Celestino, President , ITA and Prof. Jenny Yan, Vice President, ITA
inaugurated Tunnelling Asia 2019 Conference by lighting a lamp.
MIT-World Peace University students met Prof. Tarcisio Celestino, President ,
ITA and Prof. Jenny Yan, ITA Vice President and informed them about various
activities organized at MIT-WPU, Pune, India.

5) Workshop on” Conventional Tunnelling: Issues and Challenges”


A Workshop on” Conventional Tunnelling: Issues and Challenges”, was also
organized prior to the confertence, on 25-26th February 2019 for the benefit of your
professionals who are involved in the execution of tunnel and underground works at
different projects.
Prof. Robert Galler, President ITA-CET was one of the resource persons and
participants of this workshop were impressed by his informative lectures on ‘Tunnel
Layout’. Our students got opportunity to interact with Prof Galler.
