Fundamentals of Communication in Class

Communication is how we make contact with others and it being understood. It's
an act of sharing thoughts and ideas with others through written or spoken words and
non-verbal. This can be face to face interaction, group discussion, class recitation and
interview. How can communication cycle works in subjects being taught in school?

Two subjects caught my attention and interest in learning, these are

Komunikasyon at Pananaliksik sa Wika at Kulturang Pilipino and English for Academic
and Professional Purposes. KomPan teaches the history of national language and how
communication takes place between people with different ethnicities. On the other hand,
the EAPP, helps students in developing their reading and writing skills, and to appreciate
the role of language in communication.

Communication in the two subjects are two-way process because it has set of
steps that is needed in order to understand what has been said. There is conversation
between two persons, the teacher, who is the sender, and the student, who is the receiver.
Communications are expressed in different ways, it can be written or oral recitation,
group discussions like reporting and role playing, and non-verbal methods like signs,
symbols and gestures.

The communication process takes place once the teacher has created an idea, she
encodes and converts the idea into words or actions that is sent through the
communication channels. The student gets the message and decodes or interprets it based
on the context given by the teacher, which then will be send for the providing of
feedbacks.

Communication process in EAPP is comparable to a Transaction Model, there is

exchange of messages between teacher and student where each take turns to send or
receive messages in order to understand each other. It has also the noise, that can affect
the flow of communication. On the contrary, KomPan is similar to a Schramm Model
where communication process takes place between sender and receiver (teacher and
students), there’s also the feedback and the noise in the environment. It has also “field of
experience” that includes similarities on their experiences in life.
The nine elements of communication can be found in the two subjects, the
sender, which is the teacher, is the one who initiates the conversation and source of the
message. The encoding process wherein message is converted into words or actions. The
channel, which is the medium or means, can be in the form of verbal or non-verbal. The
student, who is the recipient of the message, decodes the teacher's message. The students
will have a feedback, wherein reactions and responses are given, can be oral or written,
verbal or non-verbal, it ensures that the student has received the message. The classroom
is the context where communication happens. Barriers affect the flow of communication,
having a noisy environment results to situations that message sent by teacher is not
received by the students specially when having class discussion, recitations and group
reporting.

Communication plays a significant role in our lives. It's an instrument used in

education to understand and help teachers and students work together. A meaningful
communication requires both good speaker and listener to have better understanding with
each other.
