1. Identify at least 3 Filipino Anthropologists and describe their contributions towards the
Filipino conceptualization of Self.

 Felipe Landa Jocano (February 5, 1930 – October 27, 2013) was a Filipino
anthropologist, educator, and author known for his significant body of work within the
field of Philippine Anthropology, and in particular for documenting and translating the
Hinilawod, a Western Visayan folk epic. His eminence within the field of Philippine
anthropology was widely recognized during his lifetime, with National Artist F. Sionil
Jose dubbing him "the country’s first and foremost cultural anthropologist"

 Manuel Elizalde, Philippine official and amateur anthropologist who in 1971 announced
the discovery in Mindanao of the Tasaday, a tiny, primitive tribe living in isolation in the
rain forest in such harmony there was no word for "war"; he was later accused of having
perpetrated a hoax, and the controversy was never completely settled ( 1937-May 3,
1997).
 Sir Edward Burnett Tylor, (born Oct. 2, 1832, London—died Jan. 2, 1917, Wellington,
Somerset, Eng.), English anthropologist regarded as the founder of cultural
anthropology. His most important work, Primitive Culture (1871), influenced in part by
Darwin’s theory of biological evolution, developed the theory of an evolutionary,
progressive relationship from primitive to modern cultures. Tylor was knighted in 1912.
He is best known today for providing, in this book, one of the earliest and clearest
definitions of culture, one that is widely accepted and used by contemporary
anthropologists. Culture

2. How are yourself and identity constructed and influenced by your culture?

 Culture Influences Identity. Identity is influenced by many factors, with some more
obvious than others. The cultural influence a person is surrounded by plays a large role in
the development of their identity. Culture is the combination of values, beliefs, and
practices of a particular group. I am who I am partly because of my family, but mostly
because of who I want myself to be. I will never be exactly what I want to be because of
my family upbringing, but I can provide myself with opportunities to live a somewhat
similar life. Culture has such a greater influence on an individual’s life contributing
majorly to the self-concept of an individual. The influence might either be negative or
positive depending on the type of culture that one has been brought up in. It is important
that individuals study and appreciate their culture and its contribution in shaping their
individual personalities.
